Grandaddy Purple - Ken's GDP - Legit or BS?

Second one is, yes. The first one that’s purple is from Ken’s GDP seeds about 7-8 years ago.

I’m not sure if the seeds that were available then is the same as what’s available today. But judging by my experience with them back then, yes they do need to be weeded though to find a keeper :+1:

That is definitely a good plan incase you find something special, and selfing would be better than outcrossing if you’d like to keep the genetics “pure” (although reading this thread it appears Ken’s GDP isn’t pure to begin with). If I still had that cut I’d self it in a heartbeat.

  1. so your cross has the flavor and high of GDP, but no outward GDP (appearance) traits. not necessarily a bad thing. my experiences (with the blimburn seeds) has been that GDP was a medium to low producer. those buds in your cross look like a much better yield.

now i ~am~ currently watching the OG Shoreline plant finishing up outdoors shatter that misconception as the flowers keep getting bigger, frostier and chunkier each day i look at them. impressive.

  1. ok… don’t get discouraged early. it’s going to be a numbers/time game. marathon, not sprint. and it also may not be a fem i find but a good male.

  2. whelp… i better finish up these other indoor projects then and free up some space. :
(i need a farm. in a legal state.)

thanks for the info. appreciate you.

Mendo Purps is for crosses. Super weak on its own. GDP is Urkle x Bug Bud and Big Bud is meh smoke, but used to up the yield. Urkle can be killer and provides all of the good parts of GDP besides yield and vigor. I doubt a patient cares about yield. Best of luck on the hunt!

as it stands i ~may~ end up having to do some crosses to satisfy all the patients needs.
so far the only two that really work are Acapulco Gold and GDP. seeming opposite ends of spectrum. one a heavy sativa, the other a heavy indica.

wouldn’t ~that~ be a wacky cross? Grandaddy Acapulco Purple. golden grandad. abuelo oro.

have you ever grown mendo purps? i have heard it is strong and stand alone. lots of crosses made with it.

Grow some out and see. It’s weak. Beautiful looking and wonderful terps. Why it’s used in so many crosses. Even a lot of the crosses are weaker. I don’t understand this whole “my patients” thing either. Haha Are there still places with medical caregiver licenses for normal people and stuff?

“my patient” - i was a medic in the army. was on an airborne surgical team. i am now out.
anyone i take care of is “my patient”. not sure how else i’m supposed to describe that. old habits die hard i guess.
shrugs

in this state, there is nothing for medical MJ. not even for veterans.
surprising considering the amounts of CBD places on every street corner here.

I know a guy in SoCal been treating cancer and other stuff with OGK for years. He also uses Bubba Kush, Hawaiian, and AcDC/Harlequin stuff.

OG Kush and Bubba Kush are both on “the list” and both currently flowering in my outside garden. i’m hoping they work out. need a good night time backup for GDP. have heard/read a lot of good things about bubba. (another controversial ‘origins’ storied strain)

have already grown OG Kush. it was one of the strains that checked off some boxes, missed a few, but didn’t have any negative side effects. has worked good for daytime/afternoon.
had some really weird/bad side effects from some strains. one made her feel overheated to where she would remove all her clothing walk around, get tired, crawl into bed and freeze later on when the “hot” effect wore off. that one came from RQS “purple queen” (purple kush). northern lights made her angry and aggressive. throwing stuff. hitting.

yeah. i know. makes no sense. mellow strains making her agro. she’s not easy. lots of contradictions and a very touchy constitution. as i type, i just finished loading my wife’s care with her moms tube feeding food and medicines for an overnight stay in the hospital. she’s going to be ok, but indicative of her constitution.

never a dull moment.

ACDC/Harlequin are some CBD heavy strains correct? i started my research down that rounte, but quickly discovered alz/dem requires high THC to do it’s job. CBD helps a bit with the brain inflammation, but prevents the THC from doing its job in high (CBD) percentages. strains with lower CBD content like kush strains work good. there are several sativas on the list. i would like to post the list somewhere, but not sure which category to post under.

CSI is making gdp s1s off the real gdp cut at the moment - hes posted on IG about it. Thats where id look for seed - kens sounds like its far from the original clone.

I smoke heavy indica most all the time and certain indica strains that everyone says are mellow (like purple kush) can do weird things to me. I have put a lot of effort into trying to understand why and I have found that the top three terpens and how their % relate to one another can tell a lot about the effects the strain will have on me now that I know how each terpene effects me personally. I also think that tolerance for each terpene (and immediate previous use of different terpenes) has a lot to do as to why people have different effects from the same profile (because they don’t have the same tolerance built up when they test it) I also think that some people are straight up allergic to some terpenes and their body cant process them properly, thus giving strange side effects.

From my experience: I suggest the Old Family Purple from CSI. It is the Purple Urkle x Triangle Kush. It has a very relaxing effect.
GDP is known to give a little bit of angst for some people before the super relaxation sets in (this is noted in several write ups about it), I think this probably depends on in ripening or the dry/cure; when the pinene % stays in the second tear above the caryophyllene %. (as is in purple kush)
Anyway: Old Family Purple has linalool instead of pinene. Linalool is in lavender and is going to give a much better relaxation at night without any of those other effects that can come, for some, with pinene.

Don’t waste time with blimburn.

i have had a LOT of recommendations for CSI.
CSI Humboldt is on my radar when i’m finished with the strain hunt and start looking for A list seeds to fill in for the cheapies i’m testing with.

thanks for the tip. was interested in their mendo purps if i struck out finding good GDP.

thanks for your response.

i had compiled a list of the Alz/Dem Terpenes that showed positive effect when they finally discovered those had effect and started looking at them more closely.

The Alz/Dem Terpines List

A List
A-Pinene
B-Caryophyllene
B-Ocimene
Linalool
Limonene
Myrcene

B List
Delta 3 Carene
Eucalyptol/Cineole
Geraniol

I grew out the gdp regs when they were first released from ken years ago. I got semi purple plants with that indica grape musk. It wasn’t that great I had other plants simular but better in my critical mass hybrids ,I liked his bluedream cross and bay11 much better. I also wanna note I’m not a fan of purple strains I never find anything I like in them

lol… sorry too late. you’d be disappointed to see my stash. LOTS of blimburn.
but i also have some really hi-ya stuff too. humboldt seed co/seed org, 2020 mendocino, barneys farm, shoreline, thug pug, ethos, mz.jill, purple caper… i got some seeds for me too… (old paratroopers are prone to back and knee issues along with the insomnia and other sh*t we don’t discuss… )

but, as i have said a few times, doing a strain hunt thru 37-40 different strains can get very expensive. especially if you are only buying gourmet seeds.
what if the gourmet seeds don’t work? then what? you spent $100-300 on useless seeds.
blimburn was a better alternative to get lots of strains cheaper. i could buy 3-4 packs of blimburn for one hi-ya pack. and if they don’t work, it’s easier to eat $30-50 instead of $100-300.

blimburn has served their purpose. through their affordability i have acquired 2/3rd of the list of strains i need to grow out and test without the need to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house.
(still missing some though… still looking. dunno if they exist anymore)

I’ve had my stint with blimburn genetics, call it a right of passage and learn from it lol, that’s what I did.

there is a lot of bs flying around in this thread.

whenever people start bringing up rumors about ken you can really see the prejudice that the community has against patients who need the assistance of caregivers to manage their grows.

Ken has been raided many times by the feds when he was legally operating state licensed grows and clubs. He did a lot for our community.

Ken is just a bay area med patient who was gifted a seed line and shared it with the community.

The real original grandaddy purple cut is still lost. It was never easy to find phenos like that in the seed line.

Ken’s seed lines have very good genetics, but a lot of these old bay area clone onlys were recessive phenos. the goal with these seed lines is usually to find a keeper pheno or two that is a decent representation of these old bay area strains.

I used to go to ken’s dispensary in san jose. I bought all my seeds from ken back then, and got more ~7 years ago online. I used to grow his clones from harborside oakland. Everything I have grown from them has been solid.

It’s just an old unknown northern california seed line. As far as I know gdp is not urkle x big bud. In the black market and private prop 215 collective community, no one said that. dispensaries never labeled it as a hybrid like that. That was just an easy way to sell it on seed banks in the early 00s.

As @ramblinrose mentioned Nspecta is making s1s of the GDP.

yes. we will call it that. nods

i am grateful to blimburn. they got me a lot of strains off that list that i couldn’t find elsewhere. out of stock, too expensive, etc. and they did it for me within my limited budget.
is their stuff any good? inconsistent at best. but i will lean towards better experience than worse. i did have some duds, and conversely i have also grown some really strong sh*t with their seeds that veteran toke testers thought was pretty damn good.

would i breed with their stock? not unless i had to. not stable enough in my opinion. some of their strains, no two plants look alike from the seed pack. others are stable… but that’s not good breed stock is it?

until the strain hunt is over, blimburn is my go-to JV team.
gives you the secret blimburn handshake
blim-brothers. :stuck_out_tongue:

i hope you don’t think i’m hating on ken. i am ambivalent about the gossip tbh. i am more focused on the genetics. trying to grow medicine and i want good seed stock.

i have a 10 pack of ken’s regs (well 9 now. first seedling got munched by spidermites) and have EVERY intention of still trying to grow them out. i may find a good male. i may find a good female. regardless of ken’s actions or inactions the GDP line that everyone was after from rec to med users came from ken. i’m still going to try his seeds that i have. i don’t know what i’m going to find and it’s worth it for me to try.
