Grapefruit x Cheese Cross – A Smelly Surprise and a Trip Down Memory Lane

Hey everyone,

I’ve had quite the journey with this Grapefruit x Cheese breeding project, and I wanted to share the whole story. It started with some bag seeds I found in the best grapefruit weed I’ve ever smoked. Out of three seeds, I ended up with a beautiful male and female. The female smelled exactly like fresh, mouthwatering grapefruit the whole way through, and I thought I had stumbled on some kind of pure grapefruit line—maybe something like Professor P’s work.

Then came the harvest, and everything changed. That incredible grapefruit smell transformed into something shocking—rotten feet, smegma, and just straight-up funk. I had no idea what to make of it, so I asked my friends for their thoughts. Every single one of them said, “That’s Cheese!”

Here’s where I learned something new. I’d never smelled Cheese before, and when I admitted this to one of my homies, he was like, “Oh, so you don’t know cannabis like that, huh?” He explained that Cheese smells exactly like feet, and it clicked—this had to be a Grapefruit x Cheese cross, with a Cheese male pollinating the original grapefruit female.

At first, I thought I’d need to hit up a dispensary to grab a Blue Cheese joint to confirm, but then it hit me. The smell brought me back to some Blue Cheese weed I bought off Craigslist in 2017 or 2018. Back then, I didn’t think it was legit because, well, Craigslist. But now I realize it was the real deal—it had that same funky, foot-like smell.

Here’s where things get interesting. I had already started a breeding project with the male before realizing how bad the smell was after harvest. One male was fully used in a room packed with some of my top elite genetics. At first, I was almost mad at myself for doing this, but when I told my friends, they were hyped. Apparently, people love that funky Cheese smell, and they think this cross has insane potential.

I ended up cutting down both males after realizing what I was dealing with. One male had already busted a few nuts in another tent, but luckily there weren’t too many white hairs, so I don’t expect a ton of seeds there. In the first room, though, I’m looking at thousands of seeds from this Grapefruit x Cheese cross with some absolute bangers.

At first, I hated the smell, but now I’m starting to appreciate how unique it is, especially since so many people are excited about it. I’m calling these “Smegma Seeds” for now (lol), and while I’m still on the fence about taking this cross further, it’s clear there’s potential here for some seriously unique, stinky weed.

Have any of you ever had a strain bring back memories like this or second-guessed a strain, only to realize later it was legit? Let me know your thoughts!

Here is a YouTube video of some insights

Update: I’m smoking some right now and it smokes SUPER fire. I’m stoked on these crosses I’m making. The smoke definitely caught me by surprise it really smokes

Sounds fucking delicious bro, was there still any lingering grapefruit or citrus in the smell after the cure or is it all straight smegma? (haha I hate that word).
Looks killer in your video too, congrats on finding something so uniquely funky! I know I’d be down to grow or smoke something like that for sure.
What was the original grapefruit weed that you got the seeds from called if I may ask, or was it just called ‘grapefruit’?

It is like grapefruit a bit. It’s very interesting. It changed a whole lot the entire drying process. From fresh chop just like grapefruit and quickly taking a turn in 1 day to feet with slight grapefruit and got worse before it got better. Then at the worst part it smells absolutely voulgar. But after that it smells like that blue cheese strain sorta. Sorta a lil more sweaty and feet like even. With that real deal funky cheese smell that I remembered.

It was just called Grapefruit. It was probably @BreederSteve sweet pink grapefruit grown to perfection

Oh my gawd buddy
Congrats on great scoring!! What a find in bagseeds🔥

It looks super dank and can sew how much you enjoy the grow haha Sick video too!!!

Something that caught my eyes is the terp description of Cheese. The original Cheese is mix of some sort of Blue terp and cheesy funk. The cheese hybrids do often smells/taste like feet or purely cheesy.

And super curious about how did it taste like!!! Did the taste same to smell like super cheesy and skunky?

Look forward your breeding project buddy! This looks fanatastic💯

Bro I am so sad I killed the male. I am going to Reveg the female with the f2s in it. I overreacted to the horrid vulgar smell and killed all the males and the female in veg but I still got f2s cooking & I got the female alive with the f2s in it that I will start revegging tomorrow. Honestly it’s some of my favorite smoke I’ve had. It hits in a different spot than most weed, an important spot that I’d like a lot more weed to hit, it’s a mouth watering variety. It’s like a sumo citrus tangerine but instead of tang it’s cheese on the taste buds and instead of straight up tangerine it’s just the cheese it’s not actually tangerine it’s just a little like it because of the grapefruit. Definitely it’s very own taste unlike anything and cheese dominant. I actually thought I can remake skunk with this when it was drying by that horrid smell. The taste actually is reminiscent of skunk#1 now that I’m letting it settle on the palate for the past ten or more minutes it definitely had that skunk in the taste

I got F2s in the female too! So I still have the pure line! Also I have like about 30 seeds of Limeade I got at the same time from the same grower seeded with the same amount of seeds so I bet it’s the same thing aswell! I’ll have to get into them soon! It should be limes and cheese line for that one! I never heard of Limeade before that but that was the best limes I ever had in weed it was equally as good as the grapefruit. So I’m really stoked and think I can make a good line that way aswell now that I know what I got

Not gonna lie killing that male got me listening to “talking to the moon” by Bruno mars at 3:20am :sob::cheese::joy:

This is interesting. I grew triple cheese last year and it smelled fruity right up to harvest, it’s been curing about 2 months and the rotten feet smell is starting to come through now. I also grew some straight grapefruit and that’s got a nice citrusy smell to it now.

Combining the two flavour and smell profiles would be a perfect match and makes me think of…

I think I am going to work the f2 line as best as I can because it is a match made in heaven and it’s making so much buzz but for good reason I now see!

I know there is a lot of people that love the buzz they get from cheese scented strains, so it doesn’t surprise me that this one rocks. Definitely sounds worthy of venturing further!

This cross sounds just killer. Everytime I smell grapefruit flower it draws me back to my first breeder seed I bought from Next Generation Seeds down in Vancouver in the late 90s or early 2000’s can’t remember. The strain was Dynamite and because of that plant abd its scent draws me right back to that monent in time. It was exotic to anything around at that time for me.

Now I just can’t wait for the Reveg and the f2s. This strain had definitely taken me for surprise. Hopefully I can make it available for everyone since this has nothing but interest & is a different genetic than anyone’s got since it came from bagseed but came swingin

I miss the male so much I can’t lie
I’m listening to Adele hello from the other side singing from the heart in the shower :sob::cheese:
Every time I will hear this song in the future or talking to the moon from Bruno Mars I will be griefing. RIP Grapefruit Jizz.

This is a trust fall from God

God is smarter than us all and so is the plant. And they don’t make any mistakes I’m sure of it. Now I have to trust that from this fall I will be caught with more than everything I could ever ask for from these Terp combos and this cultivar combo. To find better. And to thrive , for the dead homie Grapefruit Jizz :sob: RIP :headstone: :cheese::pray: HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE

In the past, I also didn’t like Cheese strains, just like I wasn’t a fan of Diesel’s smell. I found both too strong and strange, but over time and with more exposure, I started to get familiar with and even appreciate these unique profiles. Nowadays, I realize that these intense and “unusual” aromas are precisely what make them special and memorable.

It’s a shame you got rid of the male, especially considering the potential of such a unique cross like Grapefruit x Cheese. It seems like it could have produced some very interesting genetics, combining the intense and distinct profiles of both sides. Hopefully, you’ll come across something similar in the future! Good luck with the “Smegma Seeds” (lol), and congrats on the project — it looks like there’s a lot of exciting stuff ahead! :seedling::facepunch:
