Growing with Mr.Sparkle : Trials & Progression 2020

Its about having fun, and well yeah may be a bit more grotesce with those chopped or plucked off male bit being thrown at the ladies… lol

Last pollen I put on a female I used gluten free flower (I was out of deciccants packs) to dry it for the the first time. Never again. When applied it really burned the pistils. I still got seeds but not like without flower.

Oh I figured after I packaged up people’s pollen that I could have used rice or something to help with the humidity :+1:

I’ve used rice, I just lightly heat it first to remove any excess moisture, I typically hold onto silica desiccant packs that come in say Nori packages or other goods, and just collect the bare desiccant beads in a jar and redry those out before I use them, but you don’t need much, use to do that with seeds too but was a PIA afterwards to pick through seeds vs beads.

How do you dry them out I have several here I am using but never thought to dry them out.

Put them in the oven in a small dish at low temp of say 120c for 15-20min, evaporates off the water and once cooled they are good to go or seal them up in a jar, I usually only save the ones that change color with moisture so it’s easy to see

couple of closeups, still 3-4 weeks to go on them… well the green one is gonna get hit with pollen in the next day or two.

Day 38/36/5

Two plants got decently pollinated yesterday and today, was only gonna do the one but the other i decided to do the lower half today. Also the GSCxDD 16oz contest plant i hit a couple of the lowest buds for some seeds for @TrevorLahey but those i expect to take longer and be sparse just cause they are the lowest shaded buds.

Pulled the third seeding and essentially re-potted the two that are left to even them out, i know that plants would prefer a deeper root zone, but we will see how this goes for now. Also will be pulling the seeded buds today and you can see some plucked “guage” seeds ive already plucked in the last day or two drying beside their respected plants, just wanted to keep them together till i removed them.

Also a baby basil plant doing it thing.

Also changed up my lights again, i had it reduced down to 8 strips but just with more recent measurements with a dedicated lux meter and doing some calculations and comparisons to what i have run in the past or what the other side is running at, i added two strips back and turned up the current ever so slightly “30-40ma or so” just so it pulled 75w from the wall at max which is 25w/sqft, but consider i should be able to get by with less cause i do run a longer day with autos and will be relatively close or will have to be depending on plant height say compared to a tent.

And some Bonus shots of the soon to be seed bearers, and a random close up, when you notice it makes you consider the amount of microplastics that are floating around, and how certain materials whether clothing, bed sheets/blankets or say even carpet can play a role in all that, and why a switch over to clothing and fabrics that are natural fibers that can at least break down instead of all this plastic or petroleum based fabrics.

well not sure the pollen took and maybe my ambient humidity was too much here for how i was storing my pollen, is wet spring time and all.

Oh well, will wait and see if im being too eager, but if nothing happens maybe it was for a reason…

did get 60+ seeds off those bud stumps and what i believe to be the purple plants resin has been good to me these last two mornings… so may need to drop some in a week or two at the earliest

did start some other seeds though.

Day 41/39/8

Well moved everything over to the one side, do have the odd orange pistil but i think from age but who knows maybe some pollen was viable. Also the small plants are slow going probably from the replant but just allowing them to do their thing.

As for the other side, tuned it to 50w which is 16.66w/sqft on my 18/6 schedule and i want to try running it at that, would works out to be 25w/sqft for people running photos on a 12/12 if matching light output over the day.

But nothing up yet, and a couple seeds short of having something planted in all of them, but i started a couple more seeds yesterday to fix that, still doesn’t mean all those planted will come up though.

And shhh on the big container im just playing, for now.

I would allow myself to have surgery in that room

Always impressed seeing how small you keep those autos…

What do you think would happen if you put a big sativa auto in one of those super tiny pots?

Would it stay smaller, or get enormous, or maybe just be stressed out?

it would stretch to try and fit as much space as its roots and genetics would allow, and typically with longer flowering autos that would be an issue for me

Day 45/43/12/0

Well was trying for 3 day update more for my own photos, guess i failed in that so screw it there happening whenever, bonus probably will allow more discussion.

Flowering plants i don’t know they seem to be wanting to finish sooner than expected, was feeding int he 1.8ec range but would rise to 2.3-2.4 quickly, so did my last fill at 1.65ec but its already at 2.05, so they just aren’t consuming as much and are just using internal reserves i guess.

The bed plant seems a little slow, still growing, but im guessing shallow root depth combined with less frequent watering.

And day 0 for these, go a mix of plant at the moment, maybe some regular autos will come from it ;).

I’d be willing to bet that those grow chambers are cleaner than ~90% of hospitals out there lol

@Mr.Sparkle a quick question I’m sure you know the answer to…I’m thinking of trying to make some seeds and I remember reading that you should start the females budding first, then put the males in a bit later. Is that true? And if so, how long should I wait to flip the males? They would be photoperiod strains btw…

The opposite, you want any plant your reversing about two weeks sooner than the females, just as it takes time. But if it’s just regular plants photo or auto you just run them in one go as you can hold off pollinating your other plants if waiting for more bud to grow by saving some of the pollen and just dusting it a week or two later, if even needed

No reversing here, just a standard photo male and standard photo females. I could have sworn I’ve read that its a good idea to start the fems a bit earlier and then bring the male in but I can’t seem to find it. It does stand to reason that putting them all in at the same time should be ideal…thanks!

LED drivers are very different from any charger or power supply - for a very good reason.

Constant current supplies, or better yet, constant current/constant voltage (CCCV) supplies are the next best option, but are still NOT the same as far as controlling/powering LED’s.

LED’s have a unique characteristic in electronics. The internal resistance of LED’s goes DOWN as they heat up. That makes them subject to thermal runaway (think fire hazard) unless you use a proper driver to run them.

NO other power supply is appropriate for LED’s. They simply are not designed to handle that.

You might ‘get away with it’, but know that you are at risk of reducing their life expectancy at best, or burning them up and possibly having a fire at worst.

You also run the risk that those cheap “drivers” are not really drivers at all. True LED drivers have a lot more to them = more $$, then any other type of power supply. They cost more for a very good reason.

EDIT: That cane across a little stronger than I meant it too. People have been running LED’s since the day they first became available on simple power supplies, so it is certainly possible to get by with a cheaper power source. Just be aware of the risk. Its much more likely you will have issues if you are pushing the upper limits as far as power. Stay well under the max ratings and you will likely be fine.

Probably.
Most likely.
Maybe.

Day 47/45/14/2

Bit of not needed but did anyways defoliation, and growing plants.

So the seedlings this morning, some are doing well others are well… lagging or have issues.

But will wait till maybe the weekend before i make a call on the 4 that are lack luster at the moment, that being the third row completely and the far left of row two from the from, just glow growers, or are showing some mutant like leaf growth.

I have an idea as to what i want to do with these seedlings but need to formulate a plan a bit better or start a new thread about said idea and discuss it with you all if i want to go down that route “OG Communal Auto Breeding Project” which i think would be fun for all.

Also with show the lean that the seedling on the other side has, just interesting to see that when it has a bad cotyledon on one side how it grows to try to compensate for it.

Also will show the basil plant thats been underneath my flowering plants enjoying the shade.
