I put this in basic growing info… cause its basic growing info. Could probably go in smokers lounge too because munchies… sue me.
Has anyone here grown peanuts? I got high as fck one night and found a can of sweet roasted peanuts blah blah blah I bought peanut seeds…
I currently have 4 in soil and 4 in paper towel trying to germinate. The soil ones are just over 2 weeks in and the paper towel about 5 days. The only thing that seems to be happening is a white fungusy layer in both. Any info would be sweet, I’m assuming its not a good sign
Pics of the paper towel ones. But the same stuff I’d growing on the soil seeds
I’ve grown a few plants
No expert but are your seeds fresh?
Sometimes mould issues are from old seed.
I just put mine straight into ground no issues.
One thing I can warn you about is eating raw peanuts straight from the ground…
My first harvest I was just munching on them and it gave me terrible stomach cramps… hahaha
It doesn’t affect everyone like this but for me it did.
As the guy above me said, be careful, they can make you real sick… like liver cancer sick. Peanuts are known for aflatoxins, since they grow underground alongside fungus, which are some of the most carcinogenic chemicals known because of their physical stability…. Simply roasting won’t destroy those toxins once the mold has grown, only stop the mold from growing more.
You can breathe them in or even absorb through your skin I think…
Peanut producers and the food industry as a whole spend big bucks to control mycotoxins but inevitably there is always some.
If in doubt throw it out is the old saying that comes to mind with your peanuts there lol…. Buy the ones from the store that have had to pass inspections and test standards
first thing i saw when i searched for the term “can i grow my own peanuts” was a byline that said, “first you need to start with uncooked, raw peanuts still in their shell” but they say it’s possible. go get some more and start over and you’ll get there. i’d like to see what happens so i’m sticking around. hell, i’d eat one if they smelled and looked good.
Tons of peanuts grown around here. I get them in random places from feeding raw in the shell peanuts to blue jays and crows. Easy to grow. They like loose soil. They fix N from the atmosphere into their root nodules and that gets back into the soil.
I grew some a few years in a row but kept getting robbed by wild turkeys. Planted about 1/2 acre. Bought the peanuts at a local feed and seed store, they had a red/pink coating similar to seed corn. Used a single row potato furrow to create some nice big rows after I tilled my loamy soil and planted them about 1.5 feet apart, directly in the soil. I really like boiled peanuts, might plant patch later this spring. Gotta hit up the feed and seed store and see what their headiest nuts are running per pound.
I get that with regular beans. If I don’t use tap water and change the paper towel on a regular basis like every day. I’ll see fungus. Very interesting.
The first ones in paper towel started the white fuzz within 24 hours… on another note I germed some bell pepper seeds and planted a few, but I left the rest in the paper towel in an opaque black container, over a month later the sprouts were still alive and growing
Ya I can get them from my farm supply but they grow them here.
Now Raw peanuts
What your supposed to do with them
Green peanuts
Is boil them in brine
Omg salted boiled peanuts
I think I go get a can now
But freshnis even better
