Help me Build some Soil

Hey Peeps! I’m not trying to kill my pockets buying bags of soil for my outdoor this year. Anyone have any suggestions to as what all do I need for 3 cubic ft of Peat Moss?
This is what I had in mind.
3 CF of Peat Moss. I’m looking at Sunshine Peat moss.
1 CF of plain top soil.
1.5 CF of Leafgro 100% organic leaf compost.
1 CF of Black Kow cow manure.
Some worm castings
How much Perlite do you think I would need? 2 CF?

Thanks for your help! :+1::v:

That sounds pretty good and 2cf of perlite makes sense.

Are you adding any other dry organic ferts? They can break the bank quickly too but you get more than one use from the package.

This is what I use:

1cf Organic Compost (Sea Soil is the brand)
1cf Peat Moss
1cf Worm Castings - sometimes I use less, depending on my budget.
0.5cf Perlite - sometimes up to 1cf

Add-ons:
4-4-4 Gaia All Purpose
2-8-4 Gaia Bloom (half the recommended amount in veg)
Insect Frass
Kelp Meal
Oyster Shell Flour
Glacial Rock Dust
Bat Guano (sometimes)

I was thinking of using what @AzSeaindooin420 recommended: Dr. Earth Home Grown Vegetables and Dry Herbs. It’s 12.50 at Home Depot.
I feel like the bag of Black Kow, bag of Leafgro leaf compost, worm castings with the Dr. Earth I feel like should be good enough. :man_shrugging:

At least, possibly 1 CF more but mix up everything else first and check the consistency. Note, it will look different once well watered.

I’d drop the top soil portion. Be sure to add some lime and I like gypsum also.

I like the dr earth products as well, this should be an easy setup for you.

Yeah my peat based mix has lime in it for pH buffering.

Or if ur cheap like me then use fireplace ash instead 1/2 cup per 10 gallons, accomplishes the same

Garden lime is super cheap, you can get a 40 pound bag for $10.

Yeah I forgot to add the lime to the list because I already have some. Lol.

Thanks!

A little bit of coarse river sand is also cheap or free addition to a mix.

Hey @Kushking902 so I read to add .5 cups of Dolomite Lime per Square Foot. I see your adding 1 cup.
Is there something elce your adding that makes your soil acidic? Or is 1 cup your go to?
How dose adding promix herb & veg prevent your soil from getting too hot?

Sorry, lol I don’t add the small bags of the organic herb and vegetable anymore I had this recipe for a while. That’s what I’ve been using for lime without any issues. You can use this soil for a couple runs without adding anything but plain ol’ water.
I’m actually using it in my quest for karma journal. Take a look if you’d like. The plants are super healthy and loving it. I use a coconut water and aloe juice energy drink every couple weeks for a little kick. You can re ammend every couple runs or use it as a living soil/no till with teas.
