Are the people still around that started this site back in the late 90s or whatever?

What about the people that started other sites even before Overgrow.

Where are the guys and girls that were on AOL? That left the chatrooms to start weird technical stuff like websites? One guy got mad and staeted his own site then someone else got mad and started their own site. I was like ‘screw websites they sound lame’ and stayed on AOL…like a dummy.

There was a guy, Philly something, we traded pro wrestling tapes thru the mail but thats the only person I remember by name. The chick of the group seemed like computers and internet were her thing iirc and i think she may have been the leader in that department? Maybe even being the very first person to start a cannabis website?

I think they were competing to build a website, like they were in school for it?

Then what about this site Overgrow? Is this the Overgrow Generation people? The 4204life people, maybe 4204lyfe? Ive maintained my oath.

I think ive asked this stuff before. Ive been a million names but back in the AOL days i was CanOfMudd or BucketOfMudd or TheyCallMeMudd. Something Mudd because a guy was offended, saying i should think about my screenname before i pick one. I never knew why but in 2013 i read a great book about Abraham Lincoln and when i came across the part where a Dr Mudd cared for Lincolns killer i finally understood why he knocked me for using Mudd.

Will the old Overgrow site be back? Archives? Id like to weed through it looking for posts i made about dwc, we called it hydroponics back then, in buckets. I say i invented dwc because no one grew that way in 1999ish, i was figuring it out. Back then it was all about rockwool and drippers or ebb n flow with Emilys Garden. Those were the cool older guys us kids looked up to. At least for me they were.

If anyone sees this and im not around just know im still 4204life (obviously), i still believe in the overgrow generation and promote homegrow above all. Patients 1st.

And who knew many of us would have the legal opportunity today? And who knew we’d be fighting crooked politicians, lobbiests and greedy businesses who dont want homegrow?

They stole this from us. Never did i ever expect well off people who know nothing about cannabis, nor fought with us, let alone learned with us, taught with us, spent money learning and developing, will take over and tell us we have to buy from them now or we go to jail.

Going as far as buying police dogs for departments to stop us so we dont hurt their sales as they tell us sob stories as to why they suddenly support cannabis…its not about the money, its about them witnessing cannabis helping their (enter sick family member here) through a tuff time and now they want to bless us with the same therapeutic medicine they discovered. But AFTER they spray it with chemicals, process it through filters, radiate it and pay people low money to do all that.

Next thing i know theyll lobby for a law to shield them from ‘if you or a loved one’ commercials in 10 years. Oh wait…they already are!

But anyhoo lol…not like its really a big deal it just means a lot to me, the early internet stuff. Im still here if anyone ever wondered about us.

Welcome to Overgrow. I read the first part of the post with interest. The second part kind of reminds me of that constantly repeated sentiment from the old days. Please, let’s not slide into politics. It’s a bit of a trend to blame the government, to blame shops and commerce, but in the end, it really doesn’t matter because Overgrow is here so that we can all grow what we want and produce top-notch quality.

Interesting postulation. DWC was created in the 60’s, and I was using Ein Gedi Blue buckets in 1988-- before Hydrofarm even began selling DWC buckets… after I determined that ebb and flow was hazardous after a couple floods, and after my nft system’s troths kept getting clogged with excessive roots. But okay, glad you figured it out :face_with_monocle:

Boy you got me Webeblzr! Im glad you found a copied and pasted artical with no credit givin used to promote their products! What a cheap and generic way to bingo me, how long did you spend tearing me down? A couple minutes? Thats where YOU messed up my guy.

Firstly, i hope you read and comprehended my post but i strongly feel youre offended by history. Its like you saw ‘invented’ and ‘hydroponics’ and took immediate action, like a hero, against a guy thats givin everything to cannabis cultivation.

I said i think i invented DWC…not hydroponics. In the promotional ad you posted I saw no mention of DWC let alone cannabis cultivation. I did see ebb n flow and thats correct. Ebb n flow, drippers, hand watering…but no mention of growing in buckets. If you actually read the ad and actually comprehended my post you would have saw they are different.

If you knew just a little bit of history youd know they got really sloppy at the end of the ad. Important links to the LED chain didnt come about till the 90s when someone invented a blue LED.

THEN, LEDs didnt become a thing for home hobbiests until 2005 or 2006. I know this because i was there. LEDs hit the saltwater aquarium scene like a missile and caused a big splash with crude third world looking units which immediatly transformed into well built units.

I was in the saltwater shop when the owner, whos a fanatic, was testing it on his clams and talking about how awesome LEDs were. And you KNOW what i was thinking. So i bought a third world unit for like $600. About 12" x 18" and it grew weed decently but i retired it after one grow. The unit actually looked like one of the flat board units they sell today, where theres no cabinet, just the board and everything on top. My unit had wires everywhere. Think of an old TV without its case. So thats when LEDs hit the market for cultivation.

A girl in Cali was one of the first manufacturers of contained units she dropped shipped from China. I bought and tested one of her units too. Someone may remember her if they read this? She was controversial, i think she ripped some people off. She was a trans girl.

But yeah, thanks for giving me the opportunity to explain myself, im sorry youre offended. Its sad how things have gotten nowadays. People like attacking like heros, youre barking up the wrong tree bud. Im your best ally and yall like pissing on me in favor of marketing. Again, ibe dedicated my whole life to this. While youre out living your life and growing weed on the side im over here immursed in cannabis. I read all day every day. Everything weed and im reading, ive been living like this for decades and thats why i can spot things youll never see and know things you dont understand yet.

Im the guy that explains to business owners what theyre doing so they understand what theyre doing.

Ive also spent all my money on cannabis. Buying stuff, supporting businesses, testing products that i BUY as not to hurt their business by getting free stuff, supporting breeders by buying their stuff so they keep breeding.

Your attitude is a great example of why people like me dont help. Why risk running my reputation through the ‘mudd’ by dealing with posers suffering from Dunning/Kruger.

With all that said, im GLAD you researched and didnt just take my word for it. Im being serious, too many people take word of mouth for fact. BUT, i suggest you dig deeper because theres a lot of bad info out there on the surface…like the generic add you pulled up.

Thats actually offensive youre going to trust them over me.

Where are you from? And where were people like you when i was on these web pages talking about growing in buckets? Why did hydro stores not sell buckets? Why was i making my own lids?

Im not saying DWC wasnt around before me but i never saw anything nor did anyone else. So thats why i say i may have invented dwc.

Youre the first person that ever told me they grew DWC and brought reciepts. Ill have to do some researching about Ein Gedi. The first thing im going to look for is if he grew cannabis. If not, maybe i should reword my claim to say ‘invented growing cannabis in DWC.’ No one on these boards were doing it but then again there wernt many of us.

My claim isnt just a claim, its to get guys like you to question me so i can research. Ive never found evidence of DWC cannabis before i did it. You may have opened up a whole new world to me, but if he wasnt growing weed then my claim still stands undefeated.

Sorry Joe i knew i went off on a tangent but i digressed with ‘anywhoo’ lol. Im just really protective of the little people.

If sites like this got more involved with activism (cannabis, specifically homegrow) we wouldnt be getting run over by greedy people. We are WAY bigger than them. Theyre walking all over us uncontested. But ill let it go.

I WAS hoping you could help with history tho. Where are the people that started these sites?!?

Are you by chance snype…he is credited with inventing deep water culture for cannabis is 1998,
Dr Merle jenson ran something you could call deep water culture in the 80’s.
Some of us here have been on the forums and in the cannabis scene for a very long time …
AOL was early but there were private invite only groups before that , those type of groups is what spawned the creation of chat rooms in the first place.
Some here are generational growers who have fought the war and paid the price and kept going.
Some of those your talking to worked in the medical scene during its creation.
Anyways welcome to og and hope you find what you’re looking for.

It’s pretty much impossible to track who did a thing first in most cases. In a world with much legalization and the internet, things are really out there these days. But back in the day, things were much more discrete. Who started growing in buckets first is pretty much impossible to say. Was someone doing a thing 10 years before you but just didn’t talk about it? How would the word about someone’s method in France, that they never shared, reach a grower in California? The first recorded use of a thing does not mean it’s the first time it happened. Just something to think about.

No, im not Snype, at first i thought ‘did i ever use Snype for a screen name?’ But i dont think so. The name rings a bell tho…maybe? So many people so many years. But i definatly was never credited with dwc. I use so many screen names that ill never be credited by anyone for anything.

That is however around the time when we were talking about DWC and trying to figure it out. Ill be looking for Snype because if thats true then we had to have talked about growing. I was very active online back in the day.

I checked out Dr Johnson real quick, hes in a different field working privately so he wasnt online talking about dwc. Not to mention it looks like he was the classic drip guy? Id have to look into it more but he wasnt our influence.

When AOL opened up to the masses at 9.99 a month chat rooms were a main feature. Were there chats before that? At like $5 per hour to use them?

Doug, yeah every conversation i had about inventing DWC didnt discredit the high chance that others were doing it in some village in bunfunk America…or Spain. They just wernt with us when we were figuring it out. I claim to have invented DWC because i WANT to be challenged. Aint no one going to challenge me if i dont make the claim and i wont get juicy info like HeritageFarms posted ya know? That might lead me to the internet friends i had in 1995. I really just want to tell them im still rockin and rollin over here!

And yeah Doug, im on the exact same page as youre on. Thats why i asked the other guy where he was from. Maybe hes from England and DWC was a thing over there but they didnt use AOL with us Americans when we were figuring it out. Straight up pre 1998 back to like 1988 my only interactions with england guys was snail mail. Mostly me sending cash to buy seeds.

And guys, ive been a member here since the beginning. To this day i used probably a hundred different screen names on every cannabis outlet there is. I have to protect my identity because im a good guy but if i get busted im screwed way worse than you could imagine. And im not even talking about jail but if i get jailed everything is gone and i only have myself to recover. Im an orphan so no one has my back. No one can pay my property taxes. There isnt even anyone i could call. Jail = death unless i could get out in time to safe my home. I also live just above poverty. Im a botanist, crime pays botany doesnt so i never make any money on planys, i spend my money supporting others…its half the reason im so poor lol. But anyways, thats why im so shady. This account was started a few years ago when i thought i was going to start a business. I visit it every once in a while but i currently got two or three other screen names im trolling the internet with.

I recently lost a possible podcast opportunity because im thinking the guy got sketched out by me chatting with him from three different names lol. Im having a hard time comming out of the closet.

Bruh :sparkling_heart: do you remember the Overgrow Generation? Can you share any history? I havent been keeping up with Ohi…correction, i have been but with all the states things have become like a crock pot full of gumbo. I know im proud of Ohio.

I don’t know anything about the statements or claims made. Nor do I care to get involved in any contentious discussions. I’m a new member here but an old lover of the plant that we all love. I joined OG to learn all that I can about growing at home and get to know other cool people like me. I’ve met a lot of them in a short time, i mite add. I haven’t had a grow in over two years due to some health issues which I’m over now. I’m fixin 2 fire back up. Been studyin hard. Lurkin the threads here. Youve all made feel welcome. Glad to tell you anything you want to know. I think that time in general was just more rebellious all the way around. Glad to tell you anything about it that I can. It was an amazing thing back in those days, and the level of info and quality content here has a damn good start on remaking it all the better. I am so glad I found this place again, and so many of the years long friends I lost when the old place disbanded. THANK YOU to whoever recreated this amazing concept.
