Hlg 550 running really hot

Hi everyone. I just added a hlg-550 to my tent and the temperature is getting way hotter than I expected. I have a fluence spydrx plus that I was running but have stopped using for a while until I can mod the power supply to have it outside the tent as the temperature was climbing into the high 80s even with ac feeding in and an extraction fan on full. It was recommended that the hlg would be perfect for a 4x4 tent so I put that in. Temperature is definitely lower but still a bit warmer than I would like at around 77/80. I can try and tweak the setup a bit and get the last few degrees. What I was surprised about was the temperature of the frame and power supply. At the end of the day they get up to 148/150 & 156/160 f. Does that seem high to anyone.? Is anyone else who is running a similar setup let me know if this is right? I may end up with a bank of power supplies mounted somewhere else in the room by the time I’m done
Seems the picture isn’t compatible or something. I’m not sure but it should show the temp gun showing 145f I think at around 3 hrs into the day.

Maybe a pic of your setup would help? What are you running for lights exactly? Where are the fans? Where is the extraction in relation to the airflow/lights? What type of setup are you running? I’m clearly not an expert, but these answers will help the experts. Plus OG2.0 filters out exif, etc, so its safer than ever if you’re worried about exposure.

In my very limited (I disappeared from the scene more than 10 years ago when og1.0 went down) idea of how things work it sounds like you just need the balast moved outside the grow area or need more airflow. Definitely wait for more info tho, as I said a lot has changed since I was informed to the top info. It’s been 15 years since I sowed the seed and gonna be a few months yet til I get back. The boss gave the ok, but I have to get it stealth and possibly move before I have the full greenlight.

You’re checking the temperature on the driver? That’s about right, just checked mine and it’s at 135f, but I keep mine outside of the tent. When I had the driver inside tent it was higher as well as temps.

I have a 320w driver though, but have it running at 350watts from the wall.

Thank you. I was checking it at the driver but the unit its self is only slightly cooler. But using the temperature you provided it seems like it is running properly. I’m going to find some more details on ideal environment for led setups. With the lights on now for nearly 5 hrs its 80.5 f and 47% humidity. Leaf temp is 76- 81. I’m not stressing as long as it’s running properly. I would like to get it down another 4-6f. I’ll find those references and see where we’re at. Thanks again for your time

81 degrees is a perfect temperature and you will see slightly higher/faster growth rates than you will running at the internet recommended 75. Your watering schedule may be slightly more frequent with the higher temperature and quicker growth.
Mine often hit the high 80s and I’ve seen no I’ll effects from it. :+1:

Thats what my veg tent sits at mostly RH can go to 60%. For flowering though I like it a little cooler around the 75F mark.

Any luck with getting the driver extension cables by chance, or is it a dyi project. This is my only complaint about the drivers being mounted on the heatsinks. Being disabled, I really don’t want to have to monkey around with a ladder to adjust these and I too think it can create excessive heat depending upon your ambient temperatures.

I have been contemplating on just rewiring my 550’s and calling it fixed. But it would be really nice to have a simple extension cable for the job… Same thing with even the HLG 100 units…

I did. I pulled the supplies from both the hlg and a spyderx plus mounted them on aluminium. Made all the difference. The spyderx plus tent was too hot as well. All my tents are back to normal temperature. With summer around the corner it will save me money by greatly reducing the time the a.c. runs. I diy’d them. Buy am extension wouldn’t be too difficult. The connectors wire etc. Can be bought from a few places online.

Right on, but don’t forget about that leaf temp requirement of 85 f, it makes a difference.

I was running my tent at 86 to 90 and with porper humidity and having vpd in range you will be gold , if is a lil bit hotter just raise your humidity

Plants reallylove the heat , you using led that dont have ir so the internal temp.of the leaf will be similar to ambient temperature i have noticedwith led they love the temp from 80 to 86 is that my ladies love best

Same here :point_up:t3: iv even had the odd week of 90+ temps, though watching them daily anyway … i agree with @Esrgood4u that low even mid 80’s is fine for most cannabis grows.

A bit late lol. But the point still stands …
