I have been a huge fan of Horror my whole life. Starting with watching Saturday Creature double features as a kid to reading almost every Stephen king book when I was in High School extending to present day. I thought it might be fun to start a thread about Horror. Movies and books, whatever you’d like
For me certain Horror movies left an impression long after watching.
A few for me are:
THE THING (1982)
A cult classic that was one of the scariest, and maybe goriest movies I had ever seen up to date. This was John Carpenter Magnum Opus. There is a feeling of dread to this movie that is unlike most other movies I have ever seen. There is now a remastered version out, that I need to download and watch to see the difference.
If you are Horror fan andhave never seen the THE THING, You NEED TO WATCH IT. Probably one of the BEST Horror movies ever made.
Also …for more modern Horror there is:
HEREDITARY(2018)
Another Movie I just couldn’t seem to shake long after watching it…Up to watching HEREDITARY, I hadn’t watched anything I would have classified as a “CLASSIC” in a very long time. This movie changed that. Not only does it have some of the most Genuinely CREEPY scenes I had ever seen, and truly believable characters but the movie begins to unfold a feeling of Dread I haven’t felt in decades. Another one, if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It was a 1 time watch for me…lol While I love it, It’s almost too scary to watch again. As ridiculous as that sounds, it’s kinda true.
Next…Anothe CLASSIC
HELLRAISER
Me and some buddies went to the theater to see this movie in 10th grade in High school. It was the first time I saw a guy toss his popcorn in the air due to a jump scare …LOLOLOL no lie…completely unintentional. popcorn rained down on everyone…lol
Not only is the story of the movie completly twisted and questions your faith in humanity, but then there is the CENOBITES, Inter-dimensional travelers coming straight from HELL that become a very central part of the movie. The scares and Gore are quite prominent in this one.
I’m also a huge fan of J-Horror. Japanese Horror films are known for their atmosphere. They create a feeling of dread not seen in a lot of American Horror movies.Usually light on gore, but super HEAVY on dread and scares.
Movies like:
JU-ON
RINGU
PULSE
DARK WATER
INFECTION
ONE MISSED CALL
NOROI
PREMONITION
Matango
](Matango (1963) - IMDb)
Any of those would be a great introduction to J-Horror. Of course you will have to read subtitles, but after a while you won’t even mind as you realize it much more about the atmosphere which last much longer than the dialogue.
I just downloaded: Ouija: Origin of Evil
I’m watching it tonight, so I will do a review afterward. Supposedly there is a growing following for this movie, so we’ll see.
Anyway, feel free to comment or post movies (or books) of your own that you really liked.
Possession is about a failing marriage with the backdrop of the berlin wall. How it tells the story is a bad LSD trip cranked up to 11. The female lead puts on a once in a lifetime performance.
Red Rooms is among the best horror movies made in the last ten years. Nothing happens on screen that is horrific out of context, its a very sterile film. But theres a crime thats committed before the film happens, the description of which is bone chilling, and the people who are obsessed with it are the subjects of the film. Its a french canadian film, and the only problem I have with that is every frame is so beautifully composed, I know I missed quite a few subtle character moments while reading the subtitles. I put it up there wirh Hereditary.
I saw The Thing when I was 12, a friend’s older brother had it on VHS. That led us to find a tape of The Omen which gave me nightmares for a long time. Some of the cinemas here run horror festivals with films like Terrifier and Bad Santa. I used to be a big Steven King fan too but he seems to have turned into a literary Robert De Niro lately and everything is infected with his political opinions. I’m currently reading Holly and it’s pretty hard going because he can’t go more than three pages without having a rant about covid. It’s not aged well with everything that’s unfolded since.
“After a breakup, Wes ends up at a remote rest stop. He finds himself locked inside the bathroom with a mysterious figure speaking from an adjacent stall. Soon Wes realizes he is involved in a situation more terrible than he could imagine.”
All of the Phantasm movies and Child’s Play movies freaked me out as a kid. Just in case nobody here has ever heard of it, the streaming app Shudder is probably the greatest thing since sliced bread for us. Horror movie fans. Pretty cheap to get started they load up new movies all the time. From Cannibal Holocaust all the way up to Toxic Avenger and even new stuff by Ari Astor. Good good good stuff!!!
Totally agree about KING. He’s a completely different writer now. I can’t stand his stuff anymore, and yeah his outspoken political opinions have gotten on my nerves as of late. I could care less what side of the Aisle you stand on, your a horror writer, I don’t need to know you voted for, in fact I don’t wanna know!
