Hoss' Soil Experiments

Going to log some new experiments here. Over the last year or two the only real variable in my grows that changes drastically is the soil I use. My goal is to bring some principles of living soil systems like the soil food web and mineral balancing to my franken-program. With the help of a buddy who is learning the Crescive Method from Scott Skamnes, I’ve got a framework to begin the learning curve on.

To start, I combined 2 bags of Roots Organic Classic, and sent a sample off to Logan Labs for testing. I will refer to this first batch as Sophia1 at times for brevity, as thats what the sample/tote is nicknamed.

Here are those results:

Based off these numbers I will be adding bone meal, epsom, and some micros to balance things out. I plan on running these first tests in 1 or 2 gallon pots and doing some different feeding strategies to determine the best approach. The plants for this first batch of tests will be @middleman 's Pre 98 Bubba x KushMints [RH].

Good morning Hoss!
When I made my soil bed I used the method described here. It seems to be working.

I’ll be following along here, boss… I believe that since you’ll be using mineral inputs, you’ll be able to maintain a good nutrient base

Thanks boss. Based on my buddy’s calculations, the ratios should look more like this once ammended.

Thanx for that post @RadioWaves. :+1:
I have/had this on a dead computer and been wanting to review it.

Cheers

Scott’s approach to mineral balance and biology are the real deal. I used info from his various appearances on podcasts and their YouTube channel to make my soil and then amend it over the years with soil tests. Most of my effort now goes towards picking what to run and trimming to make sure I don’t overgrow my tent

Definately seems so boss. I’ll probably take the soil balancing course if this yields me some improvements. Six hundo is freakin steep tho.

If it’s too steep you can get the book “The Ideal Soil 2.0” from various places around the web and learn the math if you’re willing to do a little digging. It’s not rocket science, there’s just some pitfalls that can catch you with regard to soil density, some of the ways the information is delivered via soil test, doing the conversions etc. I can try to clean up my spreadsheet and share it if you like as well - it has a lot of the calculations baked in.

This is the end page it produces to estimate what my amendments will do to the soil.

Even if it’s the only additive used
