I was recently gifted a few bales of good quality medium. I would like to use them but find breaking it up a pain plus inevitably dust gets away and in the room which is making my ocd twitch lol. How are you breaking up compressed bagged medium for use?

I’d recommend that you start by getting yourself an N95 dust mask, and use it. If you can, break up the bales outdoors and get some moisture into the medium before you bring it inside. If that isn’t enough to calm the ocd, maybe try puffing one.
Myself, I find working with “soil” to be exercise for the soul.

To control dust when mixing my ProMix bales, I use large, heavy duty contractor/demo garbage bags. I break off chunks and mix with my amendments in the closed bag. Not 100% dust free, but controlable.

Outdoors on a tarp. I spray with a surfactant like aloe, yucca, or reetha to keep dust down and rehydrate.

Cut the tops of the bags open, and leave them out in the rain. When you get pissed at something, take a baseball bat to them, and give them a good beating lol.

An old chest freezer or rubbermaid tub is good if you are doing lots. Break it up a bit then lightly water to cut dust down before really getting into it.

Thanks everyone for the reply. I appreciate it. I will take them outside wet it down and bring it in with totes. Took a bit from each idea lol. And if I run into trouble I’ll use a bat lol. Thanks again everyone.
