How did you get into (breeding) cannabis?

Hi all,

Long time smoker here with about 5 years of experiencing growing the stuff. I wrote out a whole big post but essentially what I want to say is, I’ve always loved cannabis and have been interested in breeding and genetics for as long as I can remember (probably because I’m adopted), but until joining OG cannabis breeding has always been a “maybe one day” kind of aspiration. I’d say it’s more like “maybe this year” now.

My question for OG is - how did you get into cannabis, and how did you go from consuming it to growing it? If applicable, how did you go from growing it to breeding with it? I’d like to know what was the moment or trigger for you to say: “I should make my own beans!”, and would love to hear how it went, what you learned etc.

Also while I’m here: if one has a limit of say, 4 plants (or 10 for the sake of discussion) does this forgo them from chucking pollen? With something like pheno hunting, things become difficult but not impossible. If someone had a 4 plant limit would you just say “don’t bother”?

Partially by accident and partially because it was the next logical step in a progression.

I have more weed than I can realistically use. I have excellent storage methods and still end up throwing weed away.

This means I don’t have to grow all the time and have all this free light and space that demands something be done with it.

Also it’s really fun.

It depends on how seriously you take the limit.

What would be the minimum to make it feasible? Once I have “headstash” sorted, I’d love to explore some beans… but would probably have a hard limit of 10

You can have plenty of fun with 10.

I get the feeling that you wanna make yourself some beans…but scared to pollinate everything. I totally get it.

Here’s a good read for ya bud

Didn’t have the heart to cull a couple good lookin male plants, that’s how I did my first seed run.

Really cool to see “the miracle of life” from an intergenerational lense. I reccommend it to everyone

OGTW!

About 9-10 years ago, I was buying my weed from a friend who imported bricks from CA to sell.
Then, he lost his job and decided to start growing large scale, to sell and pay his bills.

He got some Pineapple Express clones from someone, and that blew my mind!! The thought of actually owning a cannabis plant seemed unthinkable!

After a few months running his grow he was having some problems and wanted me to help him automate temperatures, watering, etc (I write software)
But because he is over an hour from my house, going back and forth when his system needed updates or tweeks became time consuming.

So I bought a tiny tent for my basement, and a couple feminized seeds (I was SO paranoid the FBI were gonna kick my door down!) Just so I could have a little software test lab in my basement to help improve my friends bigger system without the long drives all the time.

This was the earliest beginnings of my Potnanny automation system.

Then I fell in love with growing and the plants! I kept buying more tents and more seeds and expanding.

After a year my friend decided he didn’t have a green thumb for indoor growing, even with automation, and he shut down his grow room.

And then he started buying weed from me because mine was so much better (we grew similar stuff… but really, I think I just dried and cured more meticulously than he did)

Then I found OG, and started buying and trading regular seeds to make more of my own seeds, so I didn’t have to buy online (we were still not yet legal, so ordering seeds still gave me FBI panic)

Now I’m hooked for life and super happy to be part of this OG community.

But, back to the original topic… Just do it! Don’t worry about being some master breeder, or your 4 plant limit (are you really gonna get caught? Probably not)
Let the pollen fly, smash them varieties together, and have fun.

I personally have always been a genetic nerd due to my stepfather raising and breeding pitbulls and American bulldogs as a child. I learned a lot from him about dog breeding and you’d be surprised how much transfers over. Anyway my wife started finding relief from CBD flower in 2015 or so but we noticed everything we could find her has pretty shit terps and me being a terp chaser and knowing a bit about genetics decided I would take a shot. Got lucky and met Floyd from hoku and he provided me with some breeding blocks and even grew out my gear and found it proper enough to sale on hokus site. I don’t consider myself a breeder though I just love to chuck pollen and sometimes I get lucky. I have given away more seeds than I have ever sold and continue to do so to now…speaking of CBD seeds…I have a freezer full if anyone likes to hunt through regs. Extremely hardy plants bred for desert environments as that’s my growing location.

And like I said before I will happily give them out for free to anyone who can benefit from them.

Even the most red blooded of men will fall in love with a male eventually

I started out as a watering helper back in 89.
My mentor was old biker/hippy and he had travelled to many cannabis hotbeds in his younger years including the hippy trail in the middle east. I was pretty enamoured with the whole thing and was an eager apprentice. He also made seeds and was my first exposure to plant selection and handling males.
in 97 I was working as an engineer/steel fabricator on a bridge site and I got severely injured which led to a life long disability. During that time at home recovering I began to focus on finding and growing Cannabis that genuinely helped me with my issues. This led to breeding and I have been at it ever since.
The primary focus of my breeding journey has always been finding/creating the most potent and flavorful plants that provide me with relief from my condition. It’s a never ending journey

Been growing from way back when the limits were zero. Bad dreams of sheriffs kicking in doors for early morning raids always haunted me. I started with just a few indoors so I could learn the plant, and liking what I did for myself I kept going, despite some of my friends from high school getting busted. Well at one point I started to actually research what I was growing and smoking. I started growing because I wanted to try every strain out there, and then the moment hit, I was sick of getting seed from overseas and always having a chance that customs had their way with them. I found this site way back. Talked and learned, and still took me years later to breed, I think I am looking for that ultimate high by making seed I started breeding for the love of the plant. My limit? as many as i can fit, once that count was around 35, my state says I can only have 6 in veg and 6 in flower. I do different as everyone has their thing when growing. I love breeding but even love the testing part more.

Cost of seeds. Bought reg seeds developed the male and started chucking pollen. It also seems that seeds are the only part of the plant that can be sold by unlicensed people. I don’t sell seeds or any other part of the plant, so I strongly advise verifying whether your local authority having jurisdiction agrees before I get you in trouble
