I would like to germinate seeds directly into rockwool cubes to then go into my dwc. I’ve read through the past threads and here’s my take away. Soak cubes in pH adjusted water for a few hours until they stabilize. Soak seed in 1% h202 for 18 hours. Shake rockwool water out. Put seed in nipple side up into rockwool. Put in a container, keep dark and warm 75f until they pop.
I typically just start them in the rockwool cube. Get it moist, tear off a corner of rockwool and stuff it in the pre poked hole, insert seed orientated the correct way, then tear off another corner and lightly cover the hole. Then i put them in sandwich bags slightly propped open with a toothpick stabbed through the top of the bag. Then put it somewhere dark and warm, and wait some days. You can also germinate however you want and moisten the rockwool cube, and gently crack the top of the rockwool cube apart without tearing it in half and tuck the taproot in.
I do wet paper towel on the modem/router too in a plastic baggie or on a seedling mat if multiple strains. I honestly don’t remember the last time i seen a cd/dvd case in person.
People only do this because they are impatient and want to see their seeds growing. I personally think its a terrible idea, you are risking breaking the radicle (the “tail”) when you do this. Why risk ruining a seed?
Just plant it, and don’t mess with it. Be patient. It will come up.
Because I’m a small home hobbyist who does this for fun
I’m a doofus who frequently makes errors (once overtightened the oil drain plug in a motorcycle, stripping it and causing much headache) - but even I have never had a negative affect of “super sowin” or starting seeds with heat and moisture. Never broke a taproot but I have got to put eyes on many
It’s faster, it has a higher germ rate if you have old or fucked up seeds, you get to see the life more; poppin seeds is a true joy. I’m mostly in coco now so more often just soak in water for a day and drop in a solo but super enjoy “super sowin”. Greatest risk in life is being over-cautious; live a little homie!
So i know this doesn’t answer you question but I suck at germinating in rockwool and get much better results popping the beans straight into the hydroton
I first soak the pebbles in the rez solution in a bucket overnight (or a few hours if I’m feeling impatient)
Next I fill the net pots up half way with pebble.
Then I stick a funnel in the pebbles, half way into the pebbles and drop the seed in.
The bubbles from my airstones cause water to spit off the water surface when when you pour coke into a glass and this is enough to germinate the seeds and enables the tap root to find it’s way into the reservoir. If this isn’t the case in your set-up you can simply manually water every couple of days, just pour it over the pebbles.
As the seedling grows taller I add clay pebbles to fill up the net pot.
3-5 days. You can also just move the sandwich bags right under light, then wait for root to pop out of the rockwool and then into your medium. Just make sure the bag is open a little bit for breathability but not too much so it dries out.
Feel free to ask me anything along the way! I’ll be more than happy to advise. Definitely have a good amount of grows under the belt, and i’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly.
