How much does it cost to build a fully featured Grow Room?

Alas and Alack!

I was confronted this snowy New England afternoon with unsettling news. My Saintly Spouse presented me with a report detailing the expenses I have run up during the last four years of “Serious” cannabis cultivation. To be fair, I requested this intel on a whim. Mere curiosity is not always an optimal strategy as it turns out. Some knowledge is better left untapped.

I had completely forgotten my ill conceived request when SS arrived and deposited herself at my elbow, clearly ready for a spousal communion session. Her sly smile should have alerted me to what was forthcoming. She handed me the three page report, gave me a pat on the shoulder and departed with a chuckle.

The first item on the first page was for my annual Fishing License, and I stifled an arrogant snort at that obvious error. Haw, that’s $19.50 is clearly unrelated to the creation or consumption of Canna! Unfortunately the rest of the 30+ entries on page one appeared to be valid expenses: equipment, supplies, seeds… Legit startup expenses for getting up to speed on the state of the art as illustrated on Overgrow and a few other (lesser) resources.

Page two continued in the same vein, but I felt a growing unease as every choice I’d made, good and bad, efficacious and egregious, was recalled, along with the clearly rising total sum involved. The expenses grew larger in size as I entered the “serious” phase, wherein my grow room morphed into an actual room with actual walls, dedicated electrical circuits, humidity creator and removers, smoke alarms, fire extinguisher globes, and of course, a suite of high quality LED grow lights.

Page three continued in that vein and I recalled discovering a seeming endless list of the little items that had become essential: a dozen of those little Chinese temp/RH monitors, a couple dozen quart Mason jars to house my rapidly expanding supply of great weed, several dozen dropper bottles once @ReikoX taught me the art of extraction, cloning supplies, etc. About that time I realized that I couldn’t regain the peaceful feeling without having a separate flowering tent, with the associated climate controls needed to accommodate my OCD enviros jones.

If this sounds like a confessional self-reproach, well, not a bit of it. I’ve put every bit of that gear to good use growing, harvesting, cloning, breeding, seeding and savoring the wholeness of our sacred herb.

I was still cool when I hit page three. It was when I realized that the report was printed double-sided that I snorted a mouthful of the (canna-infused) herbal tea I drinking! The blast of hot tea from my nose was a reality check!

Once I had mopped up the lukewarm spew, my superlative rationalization skills went to work on the situation and composure slowly returned. I mean, of course RhizoTonic is expensive, but there’s nothing else like it, right? Bags of soil & nutes: essential! The whole micro octopot and autofiller thing was fun and well worth the time and expense. The new ViparSpectra Pro lights, hey, they rawk! Etc., etc…

Beyond the adroit rationalization, though, my setup is capable of doing everything I deem worthy of doing to fully explore Cannabis in all of its manifestations. Using this gear, I’ve learned all the basic maneuvers and put them to use in a serious breeding project. I’ve got a few pounds of the best weed ever grown, a seed library with dozens of treasures… Whatever the cost, it was worth it to me.

All of that is a tediously long way to address the topic’s Question? How much does it cost to take home grown, non-commercial cannabis cultivation “To The Limit?”

For me, according to my overly meticulous comptroller Spouse, the number approaches $9,000, spent over four years, including equipment and all supplies except electricity.

I hereby bow to the consensus of whether that is good value, and I solicit your stories on the subject.

My “Crown of Creation: Frankenstein’s Daughter IBL sees first light.

PS, I just snuck in an AC-Inf CloudForge T7, and a ThermoForge heater…. SS hasn’t caught on to those yet!

PPS:
Snark is clearly appropriate here, I can take it. @Foreigner
But, also real curiosity, what have others invested in your State-of-the Art setups; @ReikoX, @Papalag, @Pigeonman, @DougDawson

30 years ago ida said 10k-15k entry fee. Nowadays its like $500. But that aint your question. 9k seems right.

Frankenstein is a beast. Big up JP!

Damn that sounds like a lot. I have a couple points.
Some of these are one time purchase as opposed to reoccurring expenses.

The initial setup for a grow is always expensive :flushed:

The second thing is how much money did you not spend on weed?

Does your wife partake?

Yeah, the stuff really adds up, especially over the years. To be honest I don’t really keep track. I am lucky in that all the lights I am running as well as the tents were giving to me by Mars Hydro and Vipar Spectra. A bunch of my other equipment was giving to me by Inkbird. Other stuff was provided by Amazon to do reviews on. So I have not had to sink too much money into my equipment. My latest AC Infinity 6" carbon filter with new controller was a Christmas gift from my son a year ago. So really I just have buy nutes and coco for the most part. All the sponsors slowed down on sponsorships but the equipment remains. Even if the lights in my 3 tents burned out today, I have replacements for them all. I did buy an HLG 650 Rspec years ago but it’s leaning against a wall waiting to be used again if my 4x4 light burns out one day.

Sighs
Being Saintly and whatnot, She doesn’t partake, and I’m OK with that. She indulges me in my hobbies, and this isn’t nearly as expensive as my boats…

I’m sure she has hobbies herself.
How much would you spend buying your supply?

Also the knowledge of everything that is used in the grow of your garden can’t be understated

Boats you say? What boats you got Grouchy?

Yep, she knits! $50 keeps her in yarn for a year!

Ya know, that’s the weird thing, I literally have pounds of insanely great weed in my closet, but I use judiciously and what I have on hand would last years. I make tinctures and that reduces the volume from quart jars to one ounce dropper bottles, but a couple dropper and a dip in the hot tub and I’m done for the evening.

Bottom line, if I wasn’t In Love with this amazing plant I’d rather be saltwater kayak fishing for stripers!

The correct question is not: how much do you spend on weed.

The correct question is: how much money do you save by growing.

And a perfectly clean product and some breeding fun.

A few bucks is a small price to pay.

Hiya Doug,

The only watercraft in my garage these days is a Hobie Pro Angler fishing kayak. Tool of choice for trout in the local ponds, and serious saltwater work fighting with the yellow eyed devil, Cape Cod Bluefish. Hooking up with one of those beasts on a fly rod is memorable!

In my youth I built a cruising trimaran with a partner, taught my kids to sail on a 27’ sloop, and surfed the Elizabethan islands on a speedy fish boat. SS & I met working Oceanography, so we’ve had years of sea time behind us.

Whoops, oversharing alert!

I can only ballpark what I’ve invest between deconstruction of my garage plus rebuild with insulation, Air Conditioning, equipment, and everything else in-between. Not to mention actual grow gear. Lights, fans, pots, automation, etc.

After the last 6 years of everything I do cannabis related I’m scared to even start to add up what I’ve spent. :joy:

Amazing @GrouchyOldMan !

My basement and growing systems are only available to me via the following ways:

1: on sale
2: used aka: “new-to-me”.
3: prize, gift or barter.

There are thanfully very few items i’ve had to pay full price on. And in those cases i usually dont spend more than 200$ cad. I’ve been lucky where i can be resourceful like Macgyver until the right time to pull the trigger of the item needed.

Every tent i own was on sale by 40-50% off or used at 60-75% off.

All my lights are second hand at 50% MSRP and my 800w fixture was a prize win from Mars Hydro here on OG when they were still sponsors.

All my ac infinity products (cloudforge, controllers fans, etc) are all used at 50% msrp or less. I got 3 of my fans from people that got into either cypto currency or 3d printing and then gave up and liquidated their losses.

My nutrients, ammendments and growing mediums are purchased when on sale, or in bulk to lower my costs. I also use locally manifacture mineral salts from a long time supplier so i pay $16 cad for 1l of their version of terpunator vs 30$, 45$ for 4gal part a + 4 gal part b of my nute solutions (instead of $80).

Also thanks to @defharo i not make mt own ammendments which did coat me lab equipment… but not my extract and refinement game is even more notched up!

I have a fuck load of air pots, whixh are not cheap at all but i found a supllier with prices $4 less than every other supplier and over a course of 2 years ended up with all the airpota i’ll even need.

Another thing is that i make sure everything i get has ideally 2 uses. Even heat pads are used in the warm season to brew teas and make cobbs!

My gran survived 8 years raising my dad in a british refugee camp suring ww2, my grandfather survived 5 years in a german pow camp bwfore he found her in that refugee camp and then got to Canada.

I learned from their stories and what they taugh me in adolecence to be as resourceful as possible.

So when i dropped 400$ on a pollen tubler i felt the hit… but then remi ded myself than u have 9lbs of summer grown to process, it’s original pru e was $900, and that 300$ of that $400 was tax return money.

Growing your own to save money on weed is like buying a boat to save money on fish😂

I would never have guessed that Dood! Your setup is second to none!

I read your first few lines to SS and she gave me “The Look!”

Yeah. I was $200 every 2-3 weeks in the black.arket days. And that should have cost me 300$ if i wasnt friends with my supplier.

He’d hook me up with just a little over his coats if i committed to a batch that worked well for my system. So i had a steady stream of flowrr that i knew how id react for medication for a few months until the bag he had emptied then we’d sesh samples to figure out the next batch

I hope it was a good look!

Also as far as presentation goes you can make shit look like gold if you’re honed to it. I worked in film and in thee arts for ao long that it’s not difficult for me to polish up a turd.

It was a Look I’ve grown accustomed to, sort of revel in, like a kid who got away with somethin. I am lucky in Love.
