How to get away from OG Kush?

So I’m sure everyone here has read at least once how most people would like to get away from the cookies genetics. Personally I’d like to take it a step further and get away from OG Kush genetics also. Not that I’m against it, I love it. I just like diversity and it seems like almost every strain boils down to OG kush nowadays. I know obviously the older strains and the strains not named kush are good starting points but I was more of wondering about newer strains that don’t carry cookies or og. I can name a few that I know of but not many, just curious what other people knew of too

Is there anything in particular you were looking for?

It’s not that I’m looking for it because I have a lot of things to grow I already have I just like learning about strains and their history’s and window shopping lol I may be more of a strain nerd then I am a bean hoarder or weed smoker

I like window shopping on the ACE site. Lots of different options.

I do like some of their newer hybrids. That’s kind of what I mean by this post I know I worded it weird with my lack of sleep and over consumption of weed today  new stuff that could be considered hype weed that isn’t og or cookies

At one point every strain on Earth was sent through a giant OG filter. Or at least it can seem so, yeah. “You must breed with OG or you shall not pass…”

So…why? To “stabilize” it? To rip off genetics removing one lazy step by throwing everything at an OG? To increase yield? Potency? Trend? Is it better than throwing everything at a Skunk?

It’s what it feels like for sure. If it’s not Blueberry, Cherry Ak47 or OG Kush based I don’t think you can even find it in most dispensaries anymore :joy: when I first started buying beans I caught myself doing it I’m like why do I keep just buying og kush when there’s a million options

Yeah. I know there were other reasons but I remember going into dispos like 5 years ago and everything was blah blah OG. At the time it felt trendy? Like anything with a little OG twist was getting attention?

Edit: it’s not like I minded, I was smoking every one of them lol. But as far as buying the seeds? Not so much

Just wraping a Kashmir run from ACE. Those are both new and old genetic. Really worth growing if you’re not into over breed commercial strains with no personality. They are not for beginners.
Personally. I used to love OG Kush. But the strains I loved was probably kept alive with a few clones remaining here and there, but what breeders sales as OG Kush today is far, far away from the real thing.

Try a landrace. Shouldn’t be any og in those.

I laughed my ass of when I Read that
Way to true.

Well, that might be an issue, probably upwards of 50%+ of the polyhybrid genetics have OGK in them.

I was shocked when I figured that out…

There is always the chem family, the tangie family, the blueberry family, and the cheese family to explore.

Check out some breeders like AK Bean Brains. He’s got a ton of neat old stuff without cookies. He also does direct-sales and gives extra beans in his packs.

And before that, NL5.

And probably Skunk 1 before that…

I’ve heard it’s a combo of market pressure. I.e. growers will only sell bud thats a skunk/nl5/white widow/og cross era dependent and breeders will only sell seeds similarly cause that’s where the market hype is. Then there’s the fact that these varieties are bona fide so it’s a shortcut to good weed.

The problem is that instead of real variety you get the illusion of variety, many names covering a limited genepool.

This is partly why I started trying my own breeding, you can select and breed whatever landrace varieties you can get your hands on and create varieties the world has seldom experienced before.

It’s way more exciting to be crossing some out there landrace varieties with terps you’ve never smelt before and producing effects you’ve never felt from weed before than growing another nice but predictable skunk/nl5/white/og/cookies cross.

Yes good points im doing the same thing. Been trying obscure and heirloom seeds latley. Dont get me wrong though og kush will always have a special place in my heart. Its a classic for a reason the high is so good heady with a nice body buzz.

Og is hard to beat for raw patency and terps thats why its so often used. It consistently puts out a strong high with that gas. But i hear what your saying almost everything has og or a cookie spinoff it seems…im talking newer genetics

I know what you mean haha. TBH kush can have some rather unstable and undesirable traits in hybrids. I have a very love hate relationship with kush.

I thought about this a few years ago when i was thinking about the cookies bottleneck. I realized even avoiding cookies, the vast majority of my gear traced back to kush in one way or another.

Some of the alternatives ive found:
Sour bubble and bubblegum

Haze is another big family that often has a good degree of separation.

Hashplants in general are probably my favorite relaxing alternative. Wide geographical range in which they might originate.

Bodhi’s wookie is a modern dad that has parents with afghan roots but not any modern kushes. Same with a bunch if his other dads

Theres a lot of strains without cookies or og kush.
Mostly older genetics and there are quit a few breeders using the older
Genetics i their current work. You just need to look and know what to look for.
I know it’s hard to believe but I never had cookies.
I had to stop smoking around when it came . The older work from the pre 2000 ish times
Is out there, lots of sensi star crosses in the last few years as well as the older sativas for example.
