How would you go about taking a pack from your freezer sealed stash

Yeah, any tips? Worried about moisture getting into the rest of the packs.
A pro told me to move the entire stash to the fridge, and then to room temp, then take out the pack I wan,
but I’m still worried

There’s no hope. Without a sealed chamber that you can remove all of the air from, we are at the mercy of nature. Pray to your god, then move swiftly.

whatever pro told you to take your whole frozen stash out … I would be disregardng that advice.
Take out the pack you want, leave the rest. Repeatedly freezing and thawing will do more damage to your precious stash of seeds than just removing and thawing the pack you want. Then yes, 24hrs in the fridge and it’s go time.

My plan is to vac pac 1/2 OZ pacs and then put those into a ziploc bag and pull individual packs out of the ziploc without taking all the packs out of the freezer.

This is a stash of seed packs, right?

I’d do what SHSC said… if at all possible I’d try to get the pack you want out while the whole thing is still in the freezer… try to minimize thawing of the main pack.

Fridge can be taken out but condensation can build up. Freezer can only be taken out when you want to grow. Think about what nature tells you, there is a freeze that signals seeds to go dormant and when they are brought to a room temperature, they will think it is spring.

I would still treat the fridge like freezer and not take it in and out constantly, but it isn’t an immediate death sentence for it.

To be fair I’ve always just taken them out of the freezer, plopped them straight into cold water paper towels into ziplocs and under my seat for a few days and they always seem to pop

If you are talking seeds, the way I understand it is it’s a one way tripp in the freezer. Theese seeds are 12 yrs old and kept in the fridge… near 100%.

If you’re talking weed, let’s ask @PatHealy . seems he mentioned freezing weed. I’m curious about this…FAF

Just bought a mini fridge today. I have been having trouble with 4yr old seeds that have been in little bags inside of camera film cases in a film case. It sits in a dark cool 60-70f room with 40-60% humidity. I’d say 4 out of 10 popped.

I keep seeds in an upright commercial freezer… -18C and it has a vacuum pump cycle that purges the air inside when the door closes. It’s just a short vacuum cycle, nothing too crazy that it sucks the door closed, but it removes that warmed air as soon as the door closes. Other friends use deep freezers with no issue it seems. But ya… one way trip to the freezer for sure. I don’t know if most folks need to go as far as using the freezer. A good fridge will keep seeds for many many years. I use the freezer for larger lots that I break up into 25 or 50 seed packs and for seeds I am saving in my “seed will” to pass onto the next generation when I move on from this life.

I use these to seal jars now and they work great. They will pull all the air out and vacuum seal the jars. If using on weed, make sure no Bovida packs are in there. Gifted one over Christmas and it blew up a Bovida pack on the guy.

It’s just that the freezer is 100% humidity

Brother , thank you for your response.
Not sure why I choose not to mention it ,but the “pro” is the legendary Kevin Jordey, he told me he have done that many times, and it worked, without damaging the seeds: basically slow defrost.
It’s a rough one.

Nice germ ratio man
Mine are 20+ years, they will need some T.L.C for sure.

well… i can’t cast shade on kevin Jodrey as far as growing is concerned hehehe
Perhaps he meant a quick trip out of the freezer while you retrieve the pack that goes in the fridge to defrost… ? Heck I’m not expert in the seed storage field but I know what works for me. I decided to freeze seeds years ago after reading a bunch about that world seedbank under the ice… the name escapes me this very moment LOL

Norway seeds vault?

They store the seeds in -18 degrees Celsius. Couldn’t find any info of the humidity levels.

Yeah, you know , just like you, I thought once you defrost, you have to plant em asap. K.J said otherwise.
And I’ve specifically asked if he’s done it before, “many times” was the answer.
Not sure I wanna test it on my priceless collection. So wanted to ask the community

My stash is not super old. Probably some packs that are in the 7-8 year range at oldest. Many of these have been frozen and thawed multiple times. I tested my oldest pack and one that has gone through the most freeze thaw cycles and germ rates are seemingly unaffected. I wait for the jars to warm enough where condensation doesn’t collect and then I open, grab what is needed, and then return to freezer. I have started a fridge collection of things that I plan to run soonest, so I don’t go into the freezer stash as I used to. Just my two cents.

Thank you, that’s my plan.

I have mine in the freezer. I have rice in the bottom of the air tight container.

I’m not sure of the name of the one I have. Didn’t pay much for it.
