There was an old topic here on a third party IPhone 400x magnification lens attachment. I thought i’d mention that that is becoming less and less necessary. I just saw a review of the macro mode in the new IPhone 16 Pro here.
The previous version IPhone 15 pro has a 12MP wide angle lens so it is significantly inferior for macro shots. Something to look forward to for anyone who is getting the new IPhone.
Soon all my cannabis photography will be with this so I will let you know. There seem to be many options and different lenses to work with. Telephoto, wide and fusion.
I know what you mean. My 12 is still very capable machine and I could probably just keep using it for another 4 years if I replaced the battery. The new one has an upgrade to 8GB ram and is equivalent in benchmark to an M1 laptop from 2021, which was already a huge step up from the Intel stuff of the 2010s.
I want to say Stephen Lynch did something similar, I think he shot Inland Empire on an IPhone. Might not be correct but pretty sure he shot one of his films on one. Pretty cool.
The iPhone 16 pro is really nice. I am able to do things I couldn’t even think of in my last one. Not much of a gamer anymore but I tried playing Resident Evil Village to test out the graphics and it ran flawlessly. That was originally a Playstation 5 game. The fact that it runs on my phone is impressive. The first charge lasted a day and a half and I just got a 45W wall USB-C brick that charged (first charge) to 50% in around 20 minutes so it is correct in that assertion which people have said. I also have magsafe wireless charger but this is faster.
Now onto the real shit. The camera system. I have to say that so far, I find the camera control switch to be not in the best spot. For vertical photos and videos, it is easier for me to use my thumb on the screen and for landscape it works much better but still not great. If someone had small hands then this may be better. The problem is that if I hold one hand on one side over the button, then my other hand tends to do the same position on the other side which covers up the camera. If I use only one hand to do this then it isn’t steady enough for my liking. I have found that zooming in with one hand in landscape mode to 25x digital and 5x telephoto is easy. Maybe with more time and use, I will get used to it. The engineering is responsive and impressive… basically a tiny touch screen with sensitivity from full press to half press.
Automatic macro mode is responsive and works well. Here are some examples
This is an old bud of DLA16. Here you can see that there is no flash and it is low light and if you zoom in, you can clearly see all the trichomes sticking out from the bud.
I still have to mess with it more to get real optimum stuff and I haven’t even output raw so these are compressed images. I think it uses JPEG-XL but i’m not sure if it is turned on by default. I know the sizes were significantly smaller than the Iphone 12 Pro. I’ll be glad to use this to document my grows soon.
