Is there a faster way to germinate seeds? (Scarification)

Man this sounds weird but when I was a kid I seen my mother put seeds in a pan with a tablespoon of water, put it on the stove an they instantly popped. Patience is a virtue to make the best plants though. No argument here. I seen people put the sand paper and seeds in a matchbox then just shake it a couple times.
