Is this a better way to store seeds?

So I’ve been keeping my seeds in a basement where temps max out at about 50F. I generally thought that would be good for long term storage, but recently read a number of things saying that it’s much better in the fridge.

I plan to put an inch or so of dry rice at the bottom of this coffee vac coffee container I have, and then just stack the seed packs on top of the rice.

Then I’ll put the whole thing in the fridge.

  • Is the rice necessary?
  • Anyone experience slower germination with seeds stored in the fridge?

I had seeds in a mason jar in a cool stable basement for 20 years and they germed no problem.

I also like prescription pill bottles.

You can use “epsom salt” anhydrate well just dont have them in direct contact with the seed.
(Put in paper bag in that coffee can can work)
But some silica dessicant. Or just rice. Problem with rice is if its in a very moist environment after it absorbs enough moisture can become a breeding factory.

I may go overboard but i have ziplocs seperated by breeder then put those in a foodsaver (vacuum bag) with a good amount of dessicant which is stored in the fridge.

Have popped 15+ yr old beans all day.
If your basement stays sub 50° thats fine too.

I place mine in cryo tubes packed with a pinch of cotton and some desiccant, then I place those cryos into these bead storage things I bought that came with a foam padded case, then the cases stack up in my fridge perfectly. I’ll grab a pic or two hold up

And as @RatsboggleBiological said if you are gonna use epsom salt when you buy it its MgSO4 Heptahydrate which means its holding 8 times itself in water. Drying thoroughly is mandatory.

image This is similar but not identical. If you punch in bead storage containers there are so many, it blew my mind. I was looking forever, then by mistake saw these and was like I’m in! These things are like gold to me so I don’t mind spending a few bucks on my storage. @TestOfOath uses the little glass vials and a huge box that holds over a hundred perfectly with slots designed for them. Great idea as well. And @DougDawson also has a killer storage method I love too.

Compared to that i look like a Homeless man who collects seeds… i may just have to take up more fridge space and eat less whole foods.
