Jacks 321 Hydro discussion, questions, tips, etc

Good morning @Papalag. Did you or @ifish or anyone ever end up trying Mapito in an octopot? Seems like an interesting experiment to try once…maybe?

Have a great day! :green_heart:

If you like that product look into Kelp4less Extreme Blend…it includes Humic and Fulvic Acids, all 16 L Amino Acids, and Norwegian Sea Kelp.

It’s amazing and cheap.

Also someone mentioned Hygrozyme or Sensizyme…look into Microbe-Lift Barley Straw Extract.

A much better organic digestive that’s more effective and WAY cheaper. 1 gallon is $40 and treats 80,000 gallons.

Speaking of Mapito

I’ve used it with both Maxibloom and also Jacks…it works amazing well and you should give it a go!

I’m using jacks321 standard ratios at half strength ph’d to 5.5-6. my plants are in pure coir, I bottom feed daily. I’m about to get a new flood drain table going. Do I need to make adjustments to either the strength of ratio?

I bought the individual ingredients from them (K4L) instead of the blend. Do you use this is soil? If not, what medium? I found that some of their stuff not actually fully water soluble, the kelp for sure, and I think the humic. I rarely use it.

The strength of your nutrient solution is relative depending on your dryback and holding capacity…you can increase or decrease the soil EC/PPM. I keep my soil around 2-3 EC

If you want EC to clime dry back more to around 20-30% or if lower keep at the 35-50% range if that makes sense to ya.

With bottom feeding vs top feed drain to waste you will see soil EC clime quicker.

Hope this helps a bit.

I’ve used Extreme Blend in all scenarios but is most effect as a foliar spray…1 tsp per gallon once a week is the proper application rate. Do not go over 1 tsp as the product is quite strong.

Yes they have products like the Enzyme that they say is soluble but definitely is not. I’d highly recommend Microbe-Lift Barley Straw Extract as a much better replacement than anything on the market and I’ve used it in Aeroponics, DWC, Ebb & Flow…it’s the best.

The Extreme Blend is 100% soluble so no issues there…

Cool. Thanks for the suggestions @Alaskagrown.

For future reference (for me), you mean this exact product? (MLCBSE):

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0009YHRKS/?coliid=INYN7F5MFFVWD&colid=2F1ARFJAUBX5S&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it

(There are some different sizes and prices on amazon.ca, and .com - of course).

I’ve heard of microbe lift as a brand, as one of their products (probably enzymes) being suggested for cannabis gardening, before. I guess that’s the brand you’re familiar with. But curious, are the other brands of this “barley extract” the same or similar enough to be compatible? If not - what to look out for, ingredients wise?

Eg:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00GLXU6YU/?coliid=IAMZZL0TEY1KL&colid=2F1ARFJAUBX5S&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it

What is the main use or reason for use? Root/root zone health, keeping pathogens at bay, breaking down dead matter (roots, etc.), or is it specifically for use in “reconditioning” mapito (or other media types??) for reuse?

Hi Alaskagrown,
I never thought about microblift as a additive, did you come up with this idear and do you have anymore information about it with its effects with mapito

Been using this stuff since you recommended it to me ages ago. Tiny little bottle has been keeping my blumats flowing ever since. Of course, I also stopped putting food in the rez so I can’t give it all the credit, but it’s good stuff either way

I would imagine that most barley straw extract is very similar…the main difference would be the concentration of the different brands.

The main use behind an organic digestive is to load up the water with good bacteria/enzymes keeping harmful bacteria from growing, stopping algae blooms and to consume dead or dying roots. Once it’s introduced you’ll notice it working the next day. It also keeps the nutrient solution stable from pH drifting. The barley straw creates a bacteria that in turn creates enzymes that consume organic matter among other living organisms. Completely organic and safe for all plant and animal life.

I’ve used it in every style of growing and really excels in DWC and Aeroponics but any recirculating system really.

Hey @Carper.

I’ve been using Barley Straw Extract for almost 20 years…started using aquarium products a long time ago but quickly found out that a lot of the products available consumed nitrates and phosphate which is not a good thing for keeping a stable nutrient solution. Then I found pond/lake clarifier…different types that preformed well but had Issues as well. Once I stumbled onto the barley straw extract it did everything I was looking for and more…and the rest is history.

Lots of folks use it these day’s…I’d like to think I was the first but in reality probably not! Lol  I’ve always prided myself on find alternatives for everything I can find. Everything tied to Cannabis is ridiculously expensive for no reason other than to take your hard earned money. One of the main reasons I’ve used Jacks for almost 20 years as well. And back then you could get Peters Pro Hydroponic 5-12-26 (way before jacks 3-2-1 existed) #25 bag for only $25 and the Cal-Nit for $20. Imagine #50 of dry fertilizer for under $50! Now that same #25 bag is almost $100 and going up every year…but IMO it’s still the best.

EDIT: In Mapito it works amazingly well and you’ll notice that if you’re feeding too high a level(Never more than 1/3 of the depth of medium) and get algae growth on the top it will almost completely eliminate it and prevent it from growing. :face_with_monocle: I’ve turned many folks onto it that use rockwool and everyone’s been amazed how well it works. You’ll be happy ya did. :sunglasses:

Does anyone have an opinion on GH Floralicious+ and the bloom? They both have barley protein hydrolysate and a bunch of other plant protein hydrolysates in the formula.
