We got ice, plenty of ice. It’s pretty in a threatening sort of way…
I lived in NE Arkansas for a little while. We got a huge ice storm. Looked pretty to just look at. We had about a half in on every twig in the forest.
It was weird tho. About every few minutes you would hear a loud explosion. I ask my neighbor if he ever heard anything like that. He said yeah, every year. Its the sap in the trees freezes, expands, with no where to go. It explodes the tree. What he said. Dont know if its true or not.
Good afternoon everyone. Hope everyone is warm and healthy
I guess Jeff knew what he was talking about. Some were louder, like explosions. Some not so much like the crack of a rifle.
But yeah, it was plenty strange to me.
I knew he was right. Did the search to show what then interweb said. lol
I spent most of my winters after the age of 25 cutting firewood. I’ve heard that crack a lot of times on those really bitter days.
Do you get flying squirrels there @MoBilly ?
Yep. There’s a few. An old running buddy had one as a pet. He cut down the tree that had a nest of them in it. He didn’t know, of course, and tried to raise the two that didn’t die. One lived. He was the neatest critter. He’d climb the curtains and glide as far as he could. Sometimes he made the length of the living room. lol
That was my buddy Jeff’s brother. That squirrel lived several years.
To keep regular gray squirrels, you have to give them rocks with lichens on them. Something in there they need. Do you have Fox Squirrels ?
Nature never ceases to amaze me.
They are illegal to keep where I live. But I remember people keeping them. When I was a kid I had a friend that his grandmother had one in a cage she kept by the door outside to warn her if someone or something was outside. Pottersville was the name of the town. Country as all get out. I seen a fox squirrel a few years ago. They get minerals out of the stuff that you’re talking about.
Squirrels have recently been seen eating mice.
My father taught me that in each litter of baby squirrels, the mother keeps one male and bites the nuts off the rest of the males. When you get squirrels you get an occasional male, some females and some geldings ( males with thier organs removed)
I have seen them on the ground before. Couldn’t figure out what had killed them.
That don’t make any sense at all, what with all the nuts in Cali… They should be well fed already!
No offense to any nuts that might read this.
LOL
When I was a child my brothers who also did tree work brought home baby squirrels. Apparently they cut a tree down with a nest in it. We raised the squirrels and they freely roamed the house playing with each other and climbing on everything. That is until they chewed up my dad’s cork handles on his fishing rods. We put the squirrels outside as there was nothing but trees behind the house. The kids loved them because they had no fear of people and would go right up to the kids and climb up and sit in thier shoulders to get fed. Until one day some mean kids coaxed them over and smashed them with rocks. They were cute and fun to watch but destructive also.
Haaaa there are some nuts there.
Good morning brother OJ, and all of OG!
