Keeping track of seeds

Good morning!! How do y’all keep track of your seeds? I’m not talking about storage, although that would be cool to see as well, I am talking about on paper or excel or something like that. For you fellow data nerds seeing your spreadsheet would be great for ideas.

I think a spreadsheet is probably the best way to go, but I have a word doc (roughly alphabetical by seed maker, and then chronological based on when I bought the packs). I put the rough seed count down, and for some packs I’ll add some detail about the parents or where I got the pack, etc.

I am currently doing the same thing as you are with the word doc. Then on a separate 3x5 card I list all the details and keep those in Alphabetical order.

Heres my “Google Sheet”. Pretty simple one, can filter however you want.

I really like that.

Here’s a snippet of my seed spreadsheet. It resides on iCloud so it auto updates if I edit on my phone or computer. Seed location is reference to its location inside my seed storage container.

Similar here, from bottom to top: silica gel > cotton wool > seeds > cotton wool. The larger centrifuge tubes hold hundreds, 10ml size.

I like the spreadsheet thing, I just write strain, breeder and date on side, works fine for 100 strains or so, any more is a stretch

You’re right…I changed it lol.

Whenever I see someone’s spreadsheet I start motivating myself to give making one another go (it occurred to me recently that I could probably come up with dates for when I bought the packs, that’d be good to put in there). That motivation usually falls by the wayside once I sit down to actually do it.

Its easier if you start when the collection is small  id have trouble making my spread sheet if i started now too haha.

I sort based breeders primarily by how interested i am in their work, most interested sit at the top of the sheet, with packs ordered by parental groups so all the same parents are together. Then I just kinda mentally keep track of how old packs are…. Probably should list the purchase date lol

I guess I will be the first to say by memory, lol. I should probably do something about that but I don’t. So far so good. :v:

Old school way. Pen and small notebook.

I feel like i’m a professional while looking at the plants while taking down notes but never grown beautiful plants just a crappy crop. :joy:

I decided I’d reached enough different strains to get some cryovials. I am doing numbers only on the vials (to correspond to the numbered tray), and numbers on spreadsheet, being careful to not mess up the sheet and mix up the order of things.

I’ll probably make a separate one that’s not my day to day working list, just to make sure I can cross-check and make sure I don’t accidentally sort it wrong and lose track.

so it’s an excel sheet? sweet how they do that nowadays. and you’re in “prod’” which would mean “production”? and you’re “more sysadmin than dev, as fuck”…i’m not sure i follow all of that. system admin, yeah, and development, okay, and “as fuck”. Oh hell, i dun need to know, do i? LOL And you say “seedfinder” is similar, and is that an app? n/m, i’ll google seedfinder.

Ok, seedfinder’s a site, and there’s this: https://phenobase.org/. Yeah, you should get that marketed somehow. Nice … dbase, or wotever it is. So, yeah, good luck.
