Landrace Expansion & Trade

Hehe good plan. There’s plenty of good sources for interesting landrace heirlooms, but they’re a little less commercial and harder to find. I’ve been tempted by a Vietnam Black and a Hmong Thai reproduction, $100 and $65 respectively.

I am supposed to be getting the Vietnamese Black if it gets here I’ll kick you some…@lefthandseeds

That would rule. I have some regular Vietnamese from the landrace team, but I’ve been looking specifically for the black to cross with orient express.

I might be able to help you too. A friend was sent over a 100 of those from Gas at Swami Organics. I don’t think he’s started them yet. he’s here in CO in the Springs. If I forget, remind me and I can inquire. I want to get involved with it, too.

Old world has some nice offerings! I almost ordered the wailing valley but ordered it from the source instead. On march 20. No seeds yet😣kashmiri sirnoo certainly perked my interest but they were out last I looked. They also carry Big Sur Holy. Also out of stock. Your delayed postage gives me hope yet that my package could arrive. Waiting on one from south africa too. ( the other is from India)Who knew buying seeds could be so stressful! This covid virus is starting to cramp my style!

Have you tried these yet? I’ve read good things. Supposed to be easy to find a keeper. Related to Yunnan genepool maybe? What are your thoughts? Flowering time seemed quite quick… have you tried any of their landraces or know anyone who has?

I’d be willing to pony up, if someone has space for a 13 week seed run. I’ve been planning an invasion of South America, sounds like a good place to start.

Damn now you got me chasing Unicorns again. Kinetic Genetics (at GLG has a cut featuring a cross from an old Michigan (heirlume, TBD) Monkey Paw. They call it Brutal Paw, Original Monkey Paw x Brutal kush. May order just to see if it brings back memories.

That is actually how I found this site on a search for the “Original”. We talked about it last week. In 30 years I have talked to dozens of people that remember it, most from Michigan or had a SE Michigan connection. To a fault most still put it in their top 5 list, that’s high praise for an old mystery Hybrid. And I agree! According to All I can find it has the same genetics of Skunk#1 possibly a pheno or different crossing of the 3 main characters?..here we go again🤪

I haven’t grown orient express, only smoked it. It’s a super interesting hybrid… very unusual genetics. I was thinking about crossing it back to viet Black, because orient has really good flower times and yields. While I love having pure sativas to work with, I don’t love growing them indoors.

This year, I decided on a few breeding project objectives based on what kinds of things i like. One big one for me will be this kind of project where I can do expansion of landrace at the same time I’m making “minimally hybridized” ~75% sativas that don’t suck so much to grow indoors in a dry climate, like where i live. Orient express is one i have in my stock that I’ve thought would be a good starting place for such a project. I’ve also been inbreeding jungle spice (Congo x g13hp) in preparation for crossing it back to a Congolese.

I’d chip in as well. Too backed up in the grow tent to offer to do the expansion though.

That brings up a question. Is there a land race in North America? And if not what would Local Strains be considered Heirlooms? Back in the day, war on drugs, cultivators were not a free and open bunch exchanging ideas as we do. Maybe in a local sense through connections, but it was pretty hush , hush.

I Know that Cali, Oregon, Washington have a lot of popular strains that have come out since the weed rush and before , but I want to know who had regional varieties that are not known to general public. If these become lost, or the cut hoarded aren’t we loosing a part of the plants history if they become extinct? In that case, like in Africa, Mid East and Thai which have regional landrace based on geographics and as much as “the next valley over”?..just thinking out loud

Yes, I think there’s a lot of strains from the 60s that have been grown outdoors in various areas. Some are at risk of extinction, such as Paonia Purple Paralyzer.

Your thinking of the mendanites… and they do more transporting then growing. Weird history there that involves a bunch of them moving to Mexico and Canada and the resulting networks that were formed.
