Light dep advice

Hey everyone, I’m getting ready to set up a small greenhouse and I would like to do light dep and get two harvests this season, I’m just looking for any advice y’all might have for a noobie. What size tarp to use, when to pull them etc. I’m looking into a 100w veg light from hlg to start them indoors. The greenhouse is an 8x6

Ok so for total black out you need 2 blue tarps with 6 mil plastic sandwiched in between then you get a hloe punch ring tool for camping repair stuff some rope but me personally i cant stand pulling tarps smh lol so i found these syrianxBBleb they initiate flower at 14.5-15hrs light i grow them with my indica (short flower) and my sativa (long flower) and a second round of the syrianxlebs which allows me to squeeze out 4 crops in one outdoor season WITHOUT light dep  heres the grow

Ps they have a 35-45 day flower super fast

Awesome thank you! I just found this blackout tarp online. For the first run I’m doing peach hashplant (peach romulan x 88g13hp) from Bodhi

I’ live somewhere where we see frost late as June and early as August.

Light dep is the only way I get a good haul outside.

One thing to note - schedule can be flexible.

Generally was doing 7:30 am to 7:30 pm for 12 hours dark - but if you are busy till later and can’t pull the tarp until 9 or so you postpone the next open to 9 am - flip flopping on times is no big deal.

Another option if you are a night owl and like sleeping in- iv heard of others pulling the tarp at 12 hours from sun up. Then once it’s dark at night - remove the tarp - letting the dawning sun be the start to the day for the ladies.

I found cheap lumber wrap - and put two layers - was the cheapest. But anything that will cover up the entire hoop - you’re laughing

I ran commercial deps for years, luckily its super simple. All you need is some poly plastic(HTG supply has then super cheap, I just ordered some myself for this season.) For your size, id get a 50 foot roll. You always want some extra so you can do skirting and side walls(trust me, you wanna do both).

Are you in an urban or rural area? If youre in a place with light pollution, pull the tarps at 7pm and off at 7am. In this method its mandatory to have some kind of outtake/circulation fans. But, if its rural and dark nights, Put em on at 5-6pm, and then off around 9-10pm once its dark. This method needs a lot less infrastructure.

For veg lights, literally all you need are some 4 watt leds, or even better those led strip lights. I used to light up a 15 x 50 veg greenie for about 50 watts total.

I mostlyran clones, but as soon as they were rooted, put them under 50% shade cloth until they hit a foot tall or so. But seeds can pop right outside once its warm enough. Its not a huge deal either way though. I did a season of all seed runs, and just popped em under a bench where it was full shade.

The biggest thing people dont talk about is the right genetics. Not all stuff deps well. I usually brought in 20-30 new cuts a year to see what did best in my climate. Usually Id find 1-3 things a season to keep in the collection as a point of perspective. But I saw you mention Bodhi HP crosses, those will do great in a dep situation. I also really liked stuff like TK/OG in my deps. Strains that dont cola up, but still yield nice.

If you wanna go way into detail on dep methods, heres a grow guide I wrote covering everything. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Glad I saw this post, been eyeing greenhouse and dep set ups to get going between this season and the start of next

Awesome info as always @BackyardBoogie420

I will add this Bodhi 88g13hp crosses get dense. If your area is high humidity keep an eye out for bud rot. I also prefer strains that don’t form huge colas, as it’s a problem if you get rot in the cola. You generally lose the whole cola

Thank you so much! That was very informative, I’m in the suburbs so not a ton of light pollution. I’m trying to keep it small like 5-6 plants max then camouflage them with tomatoes, my buddy told me if I just do a few plants I won’t have to worry about the smell come harvest time, I’m in Utah so I gotta be sneaky

Thats a precious matter :index_pointing_at_the_viewer:

I did light dep in Sacramento with light pollution… and heat, so I got up at 4am & covered until 9am-ish.
Condensation on the plastic was a bitch. I ended up using a pushbroom & old towels to “squeegee” the water away from the buds with limited success.

Do you put the tarps up as soon as the plants are big enough to go outside or do you wait until they’ve had more time to veg?

In that case they were already outside with additional light hours before going under the tarp… I made a sort of giant hood over a shop light… man that sucker attracted every bug in the neighborhood! :man_facepalming:

My rule was generally get plants a foot tall, no taller than 2 feet, or theyll get too big. But if youre only doing a few plants, it may be a good idea to supercrop and bush em out to maximize your space.

Your buddy is wrong. One nice plant will stink up a neighborhood

Don’t really have a plan yet, I’m just going try to put a few tomatoes at the front of the greenhouse and and few “tomatoes” at the back

How serious do you want to do this?

That’s what I was thinking lol I’ve got some nosy neighbors too so I really need to find something to hide the smell, I haven’t bought the greenhouse yet so I’m not sure how transparent it is I’ll post a link

Greenhouse

If you have enough space in your garden, buy it bigger and also grow some tomato, cucumber in the greenhouse.

Instead of light dep you can also work with autoflowers. There are good autoflower strains on the market. Start them indoors directly in 8 gallon pots. Give them a perfect start indoors for 20 days and they get big.
