Hello everyone, hope you are all well. See the pictures, what do you think could be causing these funny little tops on the my buds. It kinda looks like foxtailing but not, kinda like reveg but not.
My ppfd is generally somewhere between 6 and 800 during flower on this run and I’m not sure if relevant but the light also has 1%UVA added.
My soil is living organic and all plants are in a single 3x3 bed. The plants also seemed to initially struggle to transition to flower, stretching right to the top of the tent. I realise plants stretch in flower but these quadrupled or quintupled or more. I had six females initially but culled four, 2 of which were really struggling to show any sort of flower by even week 6. I had to bend and chop many tops off to have a bit of control.
The strains were ‘True lies’ by SOC (all culled now) and Blue goat kush by terpnseeds (the 2 remaining plants). The remaining buds smell great and have good resin content and one has probably the chunkiest bud I’ve ever grown but things still don’t feel quite right.
I have had successful grows with this same set up and all I can think is it’s related to my light but I really don’t know. Could it be airflow? I have an extraction fan and an oscillating fan too. Maybe they’re just 20 week strains lol, I’m currently at 12 weeks of 12 hrs by the way
Any thoughts are appreciated, I tend to overthink everything lol.
Cheers.
Edit: forgot to add that we’ve just exited summer here so most days have been over 30 degrees Celsius in the tent, with many being over 35 and even over 40. Lights are off during the day though but I grow in a tent within an uninsulated shed so it would still be frikking hot even without the light on.
2 things, first of all heat
You can see they are not liking the heat around them, some leaves are curling up that’s the first sign.
2nd, you are using too much N
The leaves that are not affected by the heat are drooping and curling downward, also they show burnt tips.
What you have here is a combination of bad environment and excess feeding
I think it’s clearly revegging under stress
Also it’s almost end of flower so you’ll see funky growth like that
No that’s not true.
You can grow at 35C if the RH is dialed.
Plants thrive most at high temps and high humidity
30-32c at veg with 70-80% RH is a guarantee for explosive growth.
The only reason people lower temps below 30c in flowering is to avoid excess evaporation of terepens
The reduced humidity in flowering is to combat PM, Rot and Mold
You sacrifice little yield to not having to trash your entire grow, worth it.
Also trichomes thrive in dry cold environments the best, that’s why after the budding has ran it’s course you lower your temps to absolute minimum.
Not a living soil guy but can high heat swing ppm’s reason i ask is heat seems to be the consensus but the leaves are saying they have a nitrogen abundance witch also could explain the reveggy looking growth made some of super soil once way to hot had all kinds of high strangeness going on
It won’t be a ppm change as something has been added or removed outta thin air,
Photosynthesis is in turbo mode in 30c + with high RH rates
So naturally the plant drink more both water and nutes
Sometimes if your rootzone is too high temp and water is evaporating quickly it can lead to a faster salt build up.
Hey Halforc, having a fight club, grow are ya?
The buds look very nice to me.
Yeah, heat obviously an issue, but the hard to get them to flower thingy, sticks in my head.
All your plugs going into your LED’s are tight and twisted in proper like?
I did that one, from ballast to mid board connector. I did not twist lock it, and one day realized something looked odd.
Anyway, hope you find your gremlin.
Take care my friend.

@TrifektaGenetics@Headies12green@Pigeonman@thainer@Foreigner@AMunkFromCupertino - thanks for the info guys, good to know that it’s likely heat stress rather than an LED issue, plus the nitrogen issue. I hadn’t noticed the clawing leaves so much so cheers for that, knew about the burnt tips but I don’t normally stress too much about them unless they are large. Super interesting about what y’all are saying about the relationship between heat and nutrient uptake.
I’m thinking I won’t need to re-amend with my vegetative mix for my next grow regardless, I use a Dr greenthumbs (Oz company) grow mix and also bloom mix between grows but I’m thinking I can give it a miss this time, maybe top dress some bloom mix if I need during flower.
This is it if anyone is interested- Go & Grow 1.5kg (Vegetative Craft Blend)
Unfortunately with my particular set up there isn’t a lot I can do about the heat for 3- 4ish months of the year, other than just not growing which I’d rather not do. As I said I try and always have the lights on during night hours which helps but yeah we literally had a day this summer that was a record for our town at 49.3 Celsius. It had to have been easily over 50 in the tent. Maybe I could improve airflow a little too and I never really know how many passive intakes to have open either.
Thanks heaps @Fuel and @PhilCuisine for the compliments , definitely makes me feel better about them. Hopefully I’ll be harvesting something soon enough.
I’ll do that man for sure, I can’t incrementally adjust them, they’re either set to 18 or 12 but I should check they are doing what they are supposed to. I’ll check again for light leaks once these girls are done too, cheers bro.
Hey man, hope you are going good! Thanks for the praise, means a lot from you webeblzr!
Yeah it’s been a bit of a struggle haha, second guessing myself and my equipment a lot. I think it’s easy for me to blame my equipment rather than myself or the environment I’ve put them in.
I’ll check the connections that’s another good idea. I think I told you that this is a replacement light from GLA after the first had a faulty connector- thanks for the reminder, I’ll have a look and see if anything is amiss.
Cheers bro!
I get to 45-48c in summer here also, even outdoor is harsh on them, I have to cover them with a shade cloth most of July and August
Indoor growing demends AC, it just makes everything so much easier.
If it’s not possible (like my case) I just do outdoor and shut the indoor grow for those 3 months.
When you see leaves cupping it can only be heat stress or nute burn, it’s easy to rule out one or the other depending on your environment.
Always go low and slow on nutes, even organic ones, some are loaded with N and will cause you troubles while flowering
Weed doesn’t take much to grow, pushing high feeding in salts or organic is for people who can read plants very good, can make correlations between light output, heat, rh, potsize and waterings, a lot has to be taken into account.
