Light Trap Design

You should see my light trap. It’s a joke. It’s like 4 Amazon boxes cobbled together into a bunch of baffles.

It works, but an upgrade is in order. It’s not solid. One little kick and the whole thing will detach.

So I’ve seen some great moves made by OGers on this front but some of what I’ve seen might not work for me. So I have a couple ideas:

This would fit perfectly in the floor level round port but I don’t know if I’ve got room to snake it behind the tent. This is the easier but secondary option.

Primary option is this:

Cut to size over the rectangle vents at shin level and secured with strong magnets. I expect I’d double up and do an inside and outside layer.

This only works if the charcoal filter is light proof. They make them in different thicknesses so obviously I’d get the thick one but I still don’t know.

Does anyone know if this filter is light proof?

I’m just spitballing here. Anybody have better ideas I’m not thinking of?

Thanks for your input. Cheers.

It’s a good idea but I’m in a tight squeeze situation and anything that sits outside the tent will take up too much space. Similarly anything sitting inside the tent would take up too much space.

Inches count here.

If in a tent, 1 gal black fabric pots fit pretty nicely over the vents, block light but still allow airflow.

Ohhh I like it. I think I’ve even got fabric pots.

Well shoot, then the cost to implement is freeeeeee!

I think I’m still married to the magnet idea so I’ll have to pick up some of them.

I’d just use duct tape but even the good kind doesn’t stick very well to the tent material.

When I did it, I did some janky thing with paper clips. Functional-ish, but not the greatest

Did it have any effect on tent sucking/negative pressure?

It did, had to turn my little cheesy fans up. I would guess like… maybe 30 to 50 percent reduction.

Cool man thanks a lot for the info. My fan is currently running pretty low so I’ve got lots of headroom to play with if I go that way :+1:

If you know anyone with a 3d printer you can print out round light baffles that are only a few inches tall that fit into the round openings that let air but not light in. Just search grow tent in any print site and you will find them.

Thise carbon filters aren’t light proof, pretty good but not enough to stop direct light.

My go to is always adding at least a 90degree turn or two with that internal part being black and the use of some filter foam as it doesn’t restrist air as much as that carbon filter but also isn’t light proof either

Can’t find pricing, but these exist (or will soon) as an option. Pretty slick, but I’m sure the pricing will be a turn off.

Check out the “breathable wall” by forever flowering greenhouse… basically wavy sheet metal like roofing tin. I considered making my own…could be done with drain pipe half sections overlapping. :v:

Though I am interested in seeing what you come up with.

The problem is I used to have an internal and external component to my trap. I removed the interior portion for this run because I needed the space and built this external monstrosity.

Now I’m rethinking my whole strategy.

Oh and on closer inspection I can’t use a hose unless I cut a hole in my tent which I’m unlikely to do.

Why would you have to cut a hole? Your tent doesn’t have a circular port for ducting?
