Looking for soil advice

Hey y’all, I’m thinking about buying some royal gold kings mix soil and was wondering if anyone had recommendations on what other stuff would be good to add. I want to do everything as organic as possible

Not familiar with royal gold and whats in it but have had great luck buying bales of black gold( not much selection in my area and black gold ships free to my local hardware store)and mixing in and making tea with grean bicycles very affordable. Highly recommend checking his site and even reaching out to him for further info he has always responded quick. Best of luck on your organic grow!

Indoor or outdoor?

Indoors, I always use Black Gold and amend it with Down To Earth. Blood meal, fish bone meal, etc.

Outdoors, I would just till compost into the soil.

I ran fox farms ocean forest and fox farms happy frog with their trio line and then canna salts exclusively when I started. Quality was good but I felt like I could get better. I really struggled with consistency though. Some runs would be great but others not so much.

Last year I switched to buildasoil 3.0 along with a few of their other products and it’s definitely an improvement for me. You could make your own super soil for way less (their stuff is pricey) but it’s convenient and worth it for me as a hobbyist.

Bale of PROMIX HP, 2 bags of “potting soil” 1 bag of “compost/humus” and you’ll be good. Get the best of both syn-organic.

I really like running with the promix. stuff is half perlite, half peat moss, with some mycorrhizia/anti-fungicides in there. makes a real good mix with the compost and potting soil, which will provide the nutrients the promix is missing, and make feeding a little easier, as it has organic matter in there.

Then the amendments… you can add into it. garden lime. epsom salts, diatomaceous earth, gypsum, blood meal, bone meal, worm castings, etc. I throw some multi vitamins and tums in each grow bag, and they have nutrients available, along with mykos for the roots to get spread out in there. or water in with Recharge.

That’s worked well for me.

I keep it super simple. Just some high quality amendment blend like Pride Lands. And top dress every couple weeks with bi weekly teas for the best growth rates. All organic and it works great.

I looked it up as ive never heard of it. Id probably try it straight out of the bag. Maybe add perlite if it seems like it retains too much water.

I generally use down to earth dry nutrients. Its what’s available locally being the main reason. Really like the rose and flower mix. Always get nice terps

If you’re shopping for different ingredients and want a bit of a comparison, below i linked the California state agricultural database for heavy metal and nutrient analysis of agricultural products sold in the state. Its a bit old fashioned and can be a bit tricky to find subsidiary brands but most products have testing data

Azomite, neem seed meal & worm casings are things I find myself buying a lot over the years. Bumber crop is a great product if you have that around. Its also nice to have vermiculite on hand. I usually collect enough seaweed over the summer to dry/crush and save but sometimes I buy it.

I’ve heard good things about build a soil, I’m on a bit of a budget, my local grow store has 3cuft bags of the royal gold for a good price

Best part about build a soil, its easy to build yourself. The owner even encourages haha. Ive been running a similar mix for a few years now. A few substitutions for locally available ingredients but same concepts they follow. Probably a little more expensive initially since you gotta purchase a bunch of different ingredients. If you search coots mix recipe you’ll come across a few sources with recipes. KIS organic (keep it simple) also has some really good resources on his website.

Mushroom compost, pearlite, sphagnum moss, Blood meal, fish bone meal, molasses. Till into existing soil. Let plant genetics do the rest…

For the crop in this picture, I fed once a week fish emulsion and molasses. Top dressed more bone meal mid August. Nothing fancy, just monstrous high grade genetics.

As a base and adding
20% course perlite (any will do but i perfer different sizes)
20% wc
10% course sand (optional)
10% alfalfa mill (food source)
Ps super simple and wont burn anything and supports biological activity

Happy frog for me. It is a bit chippy. Sometimes coco loco. I would make it. To be honest some of the soil around here get wet outside . They don’t keep it dry. Gets bugs and mold. I have been thinking of alternatives.

I ran kings mix for a few cycles. It needs more aeration.

Was rather devoted to ocean forest for many years but have recently switched to g and b organics blue ribbon mix with no issues and I’m starting to think it’s over all better and much cheaper.

I want to Make a Recommendation for Purple Cow Indicanja Precooked soil mix.I have to say next to Coast of Maine Stonington blend this stuff is the bomb For pre mix soil i make my own soil personally but in a pinch if i cant wait two weeks to cook this stuff will be my go to for now on.No synthetic nitrogen spray added like FFOF this one is the real deal.No nute burn at all on transplant of established plants.I wouldnt use it for seedlings as i only use Non amended Soil until about 2 weeks then into some of this stuff.Plants love it
