Lovers of cacti & SucculentsđŸŒ”

Not sure if I placed this in the right category, but I noticed we had a citrus lovers thread an I wanted to make one for the cactus / Succulent lovers out there.

I have a few cacti in my collection but I’m no expert, I made this post mainly to see if I could see other types I might want to collect.

This is my golden rats tail and the other is a Brazilian blue torch.

I Don’t know if this thread is active.

I love growing Cacti and succulents here.

But up here on a mountain in Chiriqui :panama: I’m witnessing a great phenomenon in the Garden.

I remember buying it as a young plant 15 years ago
and we been on a journey ever since, I had a blue Agave about 13 years old do the same.
It happens as the plant starts dropping it spears.

That’s when the alien penis appears
LOL
It will possibly reach 3 or four mtres, branch out then produce loads of little plant and scatter them all over the neighborhood.

I keep you tuned
if I’m on the right thread.

Hey Man it looks like ur pretty good with succulents, what do u use for the base in ur soil mix? - some people don’t like to share there mix and it’s totally cool if you don’t want to.

Clay kitty litter, But not one that clumps. That mixed with perlite and some peat based potting soil and sand.
I also top dress with pebbles, that last pic all white is just a shitload of diatomaceous earth on top.

I’ll have to try the clay kitty litter as the commercial “cactus/succ” blends hold way to much water for my likes so have just been mixing in tons of perlite with stones ontop to keep it down. Sounds like the clay kl may be perfect! You have any luck starting from seed? I have not and trying to learn why as my cuts etc always rock it

I have done lophs, san pedro and lithops from seed. Along with a few other things I cant remember the name of.
Mostly bought a lot of succulents online from asia before I learned they could be poached.
just make sure the clay litter is non clumping. It wasn’t as common.

Thank you for sharing man, I have a ton of seeds I’m wanting to get started. I usually go to https://mesagarden.com/ for most of my seed.

I do have some L.W seeds I’m fixing to start here in a bit that I got from a Canadian site. I really don’t remember what it was called though - I’m thinking it’s caepitosa

Any reason there would be more agave plants shooting up their big shoot that flowers and whatnot before death this season? I’ve already seen quite a few around me this month. Idiot down the street just took his out and trashed it as soon as it started. I was pissed. Haha

I only have one agave so I don’t have very much information to help with ur question man, from what I know they do flower when it’s there time to go - some even make pups on the flowering stock but once it’s done with that it will die.

Idk, but I’m on the opposite side of the country and have noticed the same thing. I have seen some of them flower before, but this year it seems like they all are. Vines are doing really well this year too.

I have four I’ll get pictures in here of tomorrow. Just two each of some basic ones. I put them in soil and compost like an idiot though. But, they’re growing pretty well surprisingly. Tons of pups and they get big quickly. Is it good to trim the bottom few inches of leaves(?) from agave plants?
