So I figure I’m opening a can of worms, but I’m having trouble figuring out the history of Maui Wowie. Was it originally a strain from the island or did it just get named named that?
Is The 1979 Cherry Bomb supposed to be the original version or is it supposed to be different?
The 1979 Cherry Bomb is a 50/50 Oaxacan Mexican and Afghani, so it seems like that wouldn’t be an old native strain to the island.
Is there a Maui Wowie that is from strains that were on the island for a super long time or was Maui Wowie created from strains that were more recent imports to the Island?
Anyone have the scoop on who created or when this strain first appeared? Is Cherry Bomb the definitive version or a newer version, or just one of many versions? What’s the deal?
There are no native hawaiian strains so it likely came in with BOEL or something in the 50s/60s. Mexican/Afghan cross sounds right.
Mr.Greengenes reproduced and preserved the original 1979 line as he got it. Just like TomHill preserved positronic’s haze. Most any MWCB is very likely to come directly from Mr.Greengene’s work with it.
‘Cherry Bomb’ is a particular pheno in the line with pink pistil’s.
I cant find the link but youtube had a podcast (seems like it was called "cali high’ or similar)… with an interview of an old BOEL member describing it.
IIRC, it was Oaxacan brought to Maui via boat around 69/70, the seeds did well locally & it was called “Kula crippler”, some made it to Santa Cruz CA, where it was loved & called “Maui Wowie”…
My man. Thanks for the info and research. Just had time to read what you wrote and it seems like it’s the most likely scenario. The part about Mr Greengenes getting the original strain and preserving it while selecting for potency and metallic cherry taste.
Alright so I pieced this together and I feel like this is an accurate history of the strain. If anyone see something off let me know. I sure wish I could find that podcast with the original BOEL member that Cannabissequoia posted about a few posts ago, but a quick search didn’t show anything obvious.
Maui Wowie History:
There are no native Hawaiian strains so Maui Wowie came in with the BOEL (Brotherhood of Eternal Love). It was Mexican Oaxacan brought to Maui via boat around 69/70 and crossed to Afghan.
The ton of Oaxacan went to Hawaii. On a beach in Manzanillo, Eddie Padilla held up a spear and said it looked like a lightening bolt due to the frosty flowers glistening in the sun. They called the weed and the boat “Lightning Bolt.”
The seeds did well locally & it was called “Kula crippler”, some made it to Santa Cruz CA, where it was loved & called “Maui Wowie"
Mr.Greengenes reproduced and preserved the original 1979 line as he got it. Selecting for potency, taste, flower shape, and a metallic cherry flavor for over 3 decades he found a pheno with pink pistils and this became MWCB (Maui Wowie Cherry Bomb)
Dang. Well the one I posted was very good if anyone is interested. They do very briefly discuss bringing the Mexican on a boat to Hawaii and crossing it with Afghan.
Howdy @Aaront596, there’s a really comprehensive and informative thread about Maui Wowie and CB over on Icmag. Also since he’s a member here as well, paging @VerdantGreen because I think he’s also worked with the CB? Hope this helps. Many blessings and much love
There are several threads with input from my friend Mr. Greengenes on icmag. He did not simply preserve but rather in at least 14 generations took the 7 seeds he got from a brick in NYC and developed them into the wonderous pheno we have today (provided someone didn’t get creative and fuck it up). He worked to tweak the sativa up in a more soaring high. I know this from a personal conversation with him in his car when he gave me a clone of HIS Oreo.
It is there, go have a read if interested. In the present iteration there are 3 phenos-original Cherry Bomb, 7-Up (the green pheno) and now Purple which has a taste of fruit and leather.
Hello mate! - thanks for the mention.
Yes, Mr.Greenenes sent me a couple of packs of his Cherry Bomb a decade or so ago (at the same time as he sent some to gascanistan) with his blessing to make/sell some seeds and preserve the line
I used one pack to make a repro way back then and i still have a pack in the freezer which i will do another repro with at some point soon, maybe this summer.
Oh awesome. I have been poking around looking for the Cherry bomb since @Aaront596 reminded me last week, in his search. I’ll keep an eye out for that , @VerdantGreen. Thank you for your work preserving such treasures.
No problem, i really need to do it soon as the seeds wont get any younger !
Over at IC there is a post in the MW thread (one of them) where a guy said he did DNA testing on a number of strains years back as a university project and the Mr.G’s Cherry Bomb was one of the seeds tested - verified as a legit Hawaiian
Obviously as mentioned above all hawaiian strains are originally from somewhere else. i see Maui Wowie as basically the Hawaiian version of Skunk - a very old sativa/indica hybrid bred and naturalised on the Island. Mr G inbred it for a lot of generations too.
