Have you ever placed a foam cloning puck on top of the perilite to see if it reduces the evaporation topside? Just curious
No. I have zero concern with evaporation to be honest. The key is the resovoir at the bottom of the bucket, I actually try to keep most of the perlite dry throughout the upper areas of the buckets. I typically water in a smooth fashion in just 1 small area, purpose being to refresh, refill, and oxygenate the solution that’s below the hole in the bucket. I’ll rotate that area on occasion just because it seems rational.
My understanding of the system is that the roots above the resovoir ultimately end up being a certain type of root that focuses on oxygen rather than the water… but I’m operating off of memory with this so take it with a grain.
My concern with a puck would be creating a moist oxygen depleted environment under the puck that could lead to molds or whatever.
Haircut day for the old ladies in the flower tent. I also moved the Jaws Alien Cookie solo cup into 12/12… I don’t know she might be too young to flower, I’ve never tried it this early with a seedling.
Looking good brother ![]()
Definitely want to see how that Jaws gear works out, I have a pack of those alien cookie fems as well.
Hey dude.
What cloner do you use or recommend?
I’ve been using plugs and a humidity dome, but I really want to make the switch to aero cloners. Mostly for roots like that, but also to harden them off easier. I’ve been keeping an eye on the Clone King 25 and totally skipped my mind to look on black friday/cyber monday. They’re pretty expensive. What do you think?
Clone king should be fine no doubt. I bought the “viagrow” brand one and it works fine but man they even want 80 bucks for that one and it has it’s share of problems…
If I needed one today I’d probably buy the clone king.
Right on, thanks man.
There’s always something to upgrade in our hobby.
Good evening gentlemen!
I’m rolling one up of Zoot, but I would like to drop a little post about my current early prune/defoliation method prior to partaking… I’m not the only one to utilize this method, but I haven’t really seen it discussed so I’m going to share.
I have a little hypothesis that while much is made of the whole “sinks vs sources” mindset related to removing fan leaves, I have come to the conclusion that a big purpose of those monster fan leaves is simply to protect the growth shoots hiding beneath them… from wind, from animals, from any and all things that could do damage. Those fresh growth shoots keep the plant going if the main shoot is taken out, so it makes sense to me that our plant would protect them.
With that said, I have found that when the large fans are removed, the growth shoots lying underneath seem to “know” it, and take off in response… it’s as if they have the thought, “well we’re no longer protected, we might as well go for it!” It seems that removing those fans early, in my experience, accomplishes the same thing as topping. The lower growth shoots take off to catch up with the top of the plant, but you get to keep that main cola stem.
Anyways, I hope to illustrate what I’m talking about here;
Old Souls before leaf removal:
After leaf removal:
Amazing how much smaller the plants look huh? Will provide updates to show you all how they respond!
Oo very interesting my friend, I am very curious to see how they respond. Is this something you’ve played partially with up until now too?
Yeah man I’ve done it enough to feel confident making this post lol, it’s pretty amazin in my humble opinion
.
lemme pull up ma chair ![]()
consider me subbed ![]()
lol thanks mo! Shout-out to your grow log as well, your plants are looking great. Love when they move into the second half of flowering.
thx mate! yes, when you just can’t wait for lights-on to check up on em ![]()
I’m pleased to inform you that thanks to your all-perlite hempybucket tek, I’m able to help a disabled growmie still grow his own medicine so big kudo’s to you my friend

I read what you wrote about the fan leaf removal to cause initiation side branch growth. Quite interesting observation. I pulled a couple fans off a couple plant to see what happens. Appreciate this and will let you know what I see in the next while
I’ve done the fan removal for most of my grows. Can confirm it appears to help with side growth.
Time to try a new larf-eliminating method this time around. I got a little crazy with the scissors in the flower tent
. Shout-out to @InTheWoods , your defoliations gave me the courage to keep on cutting. ![]()
Can’t wait until the flowers start showing up over the next week.
Nice! Haha we are all a little crazy. Let them recover after this heavy defoliating.

Just finished reading. Wow!
Bravo!
Looking great all the way. Best of luck.
Do you have any pics of the rootball those produce?
Thanks man! I never have snapped a picture of the root ball unfortunately, but I’ll snag one at harvest this time around for sure… these phone homes vegged over 3 months including the time in the cold garage lol, so the roots should be a sight to behold.
Merry Christmas all!
