The one I have is like flowers and pine.
My childhood friend Jared died this past year. He was who introduced me to weed when we were still just kids. He was quite the character and I will never forget him, and I’d like to share an old story with you guys.
We were both 14 year old potheads in a tiny little town with nothing to do. We spent a lot of that time smoking joints of seedy brown Mexican weed. Jared would always “eat the Scooby snack” when we were done. Aka eating the roach. He said it was like an edible and it would keep you high for longer.
So one day we are smoking up at our friend Josh’s house with a bunch of other kids. Josh comes out the bathroom yelling at Jared. “Bro, if you need to take a shit then do it at your own house! Or at least flush the toilet! Damn!”
Jared is getting defensive and saying it wasn’t him. He wouldn’t do that, it must be our other friend, etc. They are arguing back and forth and Josh is getting increasingly angry. Finally Josh yells out “Mother Fucker I know it was you! There were roaches in the turd! And you are the only nasty mother fucker I know who eats the roaches!”
Jared turned red faced and went silent. The rest of us laughed until we couldn’t breathe. We had all seen him eat roaches, but probably nobody thought about him digesting them. Apparently, according to Josh, they were stuck in the turd like corn kernels. That was twenty something years ago and it still makes me laugh to this day.
Well the ‘93 Mexican reproduction was a bust. Almost all of the plants were intersex. It is a bummer, but shit happens. I still have the f2 mother of the AllStar. It is a clone only at this point, though I may try to self it.
For now I am moving on to other plans and plants. I will be back to showing my current grow. There isn’t much in there at the moment, but I do have a beautiful Molokai Frost x Stony Bologna. Everyone’s favorite member @DougDawson was kind enough to send this my way, which was gifted to him by another generous member.
It is a lovely plant with old school genetics, columnar in structure, a low feeder, vigorous, and quite an easy grow. Truth is I am struggling with a PH issue and this one barely cares. I am taking a few cuttings that I plan to flower with the ‘93 AllStar. I have learned my lesson before, this hybrid might be worth keeping around and so I am keeping a few cuttings.
The ‘93 AllStar is alive and kicking. Just a clone only at this point. I have successfully revegged and cloned a cutting of it. Still hardening off, and spreading its roots, but looks good to go. I will continue to breed with it, and hopefully once it has a different male it will have less intersex traits. The momma is bomb proof. No nanners no matter what, however within its genetics it might still spit out intersex traits. Time will tell, and we will see. I am just glad I still have it. I took two clones off of the revegged plant and it just collapsed. Died literally within hours. So without this clone rooting then I could have lost it.
Molokai Frost x Stony Bologna. Maybe I will dub this Hawaiian Steak. A tribute to the Hawaiian heritage and their love of Spam.
Ha, I love the name! Hard to come up with a new strain name these days. Glad you got your clones in time. peace
I gave the Hawaiian Steak a low dose of ferts and she absolutely hated it. Little bit of leaf curl and slightly burned edges of leaves.
The heirloom strains I have been growing are very low feeders. It makes perfect sense, considering these plants were adapted to being guerrilla grown on hillsides instead of in Dutch hydro gardens. All these girls really need is good soil and water. They really want to be left alone.
The HS is about done stretching and is starting to produce flowers.
The ‘93 Mexican is growing fine, but doesn’t like ferts either. Doing some LST and turning it into a fresh momma.
I have 5 Oaxacan that are the same way. I gave the seedlings a really low dose fish thing and the showed their displeasure. Landrace do seem to want to be left alone. Pretty nice other than some extra time involved. Easy growing. I have to up pot mine tomorrow and let them rip. peace
AllStar has been topped and LST’d, I am going to give it a few more weeks and flip it to flower. It will be really nice to have a pile of this as sensimilla. Last time it was so full of seeds it really was like Mexican weed.
I have a growers get together in early September and I really want to bring this stuff to share with everyone.
The Hawaiian Steak (Molokai Frost x Stony Bologna) is kicking out nanners. It has been chopped and discarded.
I am pretty frustrated if I am honest. It seems like I have spent about a half of a year growing nothing but intersex plants. Damn I am tired of hermi plants!
There is nothing to be done except to start back from scratch. This time I think I will start some Jordan of the Islands UBC Chemo that I got from the group buy.
I miss old school BC bud, and I am hoping this will be a nice representation of that stony green weed from my high school years.
Hey mota just found your grow journal
Are you growing under lights or sun??
My exp. With landrace genetica (sativa) they dont like fertilizer , repotting is a no no ,to small of a container, they dont like growlights, starting under lights and then move outside also a big no no , i had to grow them direct on the spot for best results
And even so they have herma in their genetics to survive For 100 of years
From your writing and photos i understood you move your plants from light to sunlight and visa versa i think that is giving you that herma problem.
My sugestion Put your seeds in bigger container and direct on 12/12(or 11,5 light) perpetual cul the males and put new seeds
If they are outside you should cover them every 12h
Hope you understand my writing
I don’t think that is what is causing the hermi problem. I think it is just the genetics I have been using.
I don’t grow any landrace, mostly heirlooms and they have been grown in a variety of conditions for generations.
I use a lot of rare stuff, and when they haven’t been inbred as much as modern strains they tend to still kick out a few bananas across the population.
The UBC Chemo from the JOTI group buy is doing excellent. These are right around two weeks old. I meant to transplant them a few days ago but they will be fine once they get some nutrients out of the fresh soil.
My poor Mexican has been through hell since a day or two after this photo was taken.
I was listening to a podcast and a local grower was saying on the Front Range they can change what reservoir they are using for a water source at any time, and your PH might change overnight.
I listened to that and thought it was very interesting, then sure enough it happened to me. I was out of PH calibration solution and I just mixed up the same tap water with a little ph up that I always use. Raises my 5.5 tap to about 6.8. Unfortunately practically over night my tap water changed to about 7.0 and was raised to over 8.0 with the addition of ph up. I quickly realized my plant was having a problem and I checked the ph of the water jug and about shit myself. I flushed it with some proper ph adjusted water and now the plant has been suffering from overwatering for a few days now.
Seriously I haven’t fucked up a plant that bad since high school. It will recover, but was seriously damaged. ALWAYS be sure you know what you are giving your plants. Thank god I had watered the Chemo seedlings with a jug of distilled water or I would be up shit creek.
Good show, buddy
Are you the same Motaco from ICMag who had a cottonmouth as his profile pic?
That is me. I was 420guerrilla at the original OG around 2002. I started the “Ultimate Sativa Thread” that is still around on a few forums.
OG crashed and everyone went to IC mag. I changed my handle to Motaco, and then ICmag went to shit and now everybody is here again. Where we should be frankly. I was always an Overgrower at heart.
Thats awesome.
I used to lurk back in the day. I lurked for several years before I even started growing.
But yeah, I definitely remember your posts back in the day as I was hunting out sativas for nerve pain.
Well I have figured out an ongoing mystery.
I use water test strips from my fish tank to test the quality of my water before using it. I have a ph pen, but I always want to calibrate it before using it, and I have to buy distilled water to do that. It is just kind of a hassle and I don’t usually bother unless I am adding fertilizer or doing a few other tests.
I calibrated my ph pen and decided to do a little test of the accuracy of these fish tank strips with a few different solutions. It turns out that these ph strips are absolute crap. My guess is they expired. I checked for an expiration date, and it didn’t have one, but they are wildly inaccurate.
It is no wonder I have been dealing with ph problems. I am using my ph pen more now, and I ordered some much more high quality fish tank strips.
I had never had so much damn trouble with ph in my life, and it makes perfect sense now that I found out those strips are useless. Hopefully now I will have that situation under control.
As a little grow update I have culled three Chemo plants for underperforming, and then two males practically autoflowered on me. I won’t say auto flower for sure, but I swear within three days of repotting them and two plants had these nubby little growth tips.
I looked closer and sure enough in week three I found that two premature ejaculators were ready to bust all over the room. Culled and tossed.
Overall I am satisfied with UBC Chemo so far. It is reasonably uniform, and shows good health and vigor.
That autoflowering could be a symptom of you trying to chase a perfect pH with imperfect tools.
I noticed a big step up in plant health when I stopped micromanaging pH.
The only time I needed to pH every time was in southern oregon when the spring water was above 9.5.
For pH down, i use vinegar or citric acid crystals if its a big op.
For pH up I use rock dust.
But yeah, ive seen so much freaky shit (herms, autoflower, weird morphology) from tweaking the pH too much and too drastically
Strips are useless for me, but drops work very well.
Cheers
