My experiences with octopots. 2 tents and a closet

Hello Everyone, My name is James. I started growing autoflowers in my closet and had moderate success. I have recently bought two tents and started my journey with photoperiods. Which I already love.

My tents are 70x70x200 cm. My lights in the tents are Kingbrite P55 240 watts. The lights in the closet, where I grow three autoflowers are Bavagreen 150 watts on each. My closet is 203x70x200 cm.

I am using 6 gallon Octopots in the tents and 3 gallon Octopots in the closet due to space concerns. All of my Octopots are on turntables that I got off temu. They fit perfectly under the base. I supplement with CO2 and use Fox Farm nutes with some extras.

I am having a little problem with my autoflowers. I am pretty sure I packed them to tight. I also used to much water and made the soil like mud.

Gorilla Zkittles Auto. My only real success with autos in the Octopots so far.

Hulkberry Auto. I have grown this before and she is super small in comparison

Euforia. First shot at photoperiods and Octopots.

OG Kush. Doing great.

I have three autos going and only one looks like a keeper. I used the whole length of the sleeve. I also packed one too tight and wet it too intensely. On top of that I botched the transplant and I think I broke the taproot.

The Gorilla Zkittles is doing great. The two photoperiods are doing great.

I am not new. Just new to Octopots and having issues with autoflowers.

Hello my friend @Papalag knows about this.

I have read some of his stuff. Very insightful. This is the first site I have seen people using Octopots.

Hey man!! You sound like you are on your way to getting everything dialed in and locked down. Your plants look great and your spaces are pretty cool! I wish you nothing but smooth sailing and bountiful harvests!

The Octopots are great and I am loving the tents and photoperiods. Thanks for the well wishes.

I have to pH the reservoir all the time. Any insight from experienced Octopot growers?

Euforia. Week 5 flower

OG Kush. Week 2 flower. I think she is almost done stretching

Gorilla Zkittlez Auto. Week 2 flower

Hulkberry Auto. Week 1 flower. I hope she stretches a bit. Slow growth, super bushy.

Is the PH drifting up or down? Im assuming thats what you mean by PH the res all the time.

What medium are you using?

It’s always drifting up. My nutes will be under 6 and I will add to the reservoir and soon after the reservoir pH is at 7.

I am using Coco Loco soil.

I had the same issue using micro octos. Ph would climb from 5.7 to 6.2 or more overnight.

Changed from RO water to tap to provide more of a PH buffer.

Changed medium from a soil and compost mix to Promix BX + 25% perlite.

Have not seen the PH issue since.

I think the RO to tap change had the biggest effect.

I PH to 5.7 to allow rise over time and still be in spec.

This is a handy chart to determine what is going on in res. Not sure of creator but @GrouchyOldMan sent it to me.

Good luck with the grows. :green_heart:

PS - Keep an eye on those roots. I had root rot begin when PH was swinging.

I have not been checking my ec in the reservoir. I do have a TDS meter that I could keep an eye on the reservoir with. I was just worried that the soil mixed with the water would change the numbers.

Should i get an ec meter?

I am using ro water.

I would get an ec meter. It is a good troubleshooting tool and not awfully expensive. I’ve had $20 cheap ones but now use Apera. Probably cheaper in the long run and more reliable. Watch for sales.

Problem with RO water is there is nothing to stabilize PH. A slight change in tap water becomes a huge swing in RO. I believe Cal-mag helps some with stabilizing. Also not a bad addition to water regardless. I use epsom and gypsum to supply it even with tap.

I also use apera, they have good mid priced equipment. I will buy one on Friday.

I am also using too much pH down. What else should be used to lower pH without overloading the phosphorus.

I have only used Gen Hydro PH down. How much do you need? I just used 6 ml to bring 3 gal down from 6.5 to 5.6 ph after adding nutes.

You may also want to check after sitting overnight to make sure the solution isnt climbing itself. Ive done so and dont see any PH change if just in a bucket overnight.

John, what did you mean by the solution climbing itself.

Just mix nutes and ph. Then let that sit overnight.
Is the PH the same when checking again?

If the PH climbs before even watering then you have to solve that first. Takes roots, medium out of equation when chasing ph drift.

I will let some nutes sit overnight.

Do you leave the caps on the reservoir on or off? I put them on and I think my roots suffered a bit. I was trying to keep the humidity down in my small tents so the exhaust fan did not run constantly.

I am using faux mini octos so no cap.
As a rule of thumb better to cover any res holes. Otherwise you run risk of algae growth.

Your garden looks healthy. I’m not sure you have any issues. If the plant eats quicker than it drinks, the ph will rise. Are you mixing nutes at the recommended strength?

The ec meter and chart will tell for sure.

Have a great one. :green_heart:

Thanks for your help John. I am just learning this reservoir game. You have been more than helpful.

I will use the chart and the ec meter to get a better understanding of what’s going on in the reservoir.
