Naming rules and specifics

Hey! Since I bought some Meph beans, I really enjoy the little freebies they send. However, they don’t really come with a strain name, rather the parents names (in this case, HubbaBubbaSmelloScope x Skystomper 2.0)

Would I be allowed to come up with a name purely just to reference this freebie throughout it’s lifecycle ? Not really sure because I wouldn’t want to name something I didn’t breed, but it’s just a mild inconvenience when referencing the plant, whether it be through forums or discussion.

Thanks!

Some people reference the strain at the beginning of the grow and then give each plant an individual name that they use to refer to it going forward. Others use abbreviations.

I’m not sure of the protocols on naming it as a strain or something, I’ll let others speak to that.

Call it what ever you want. Just list the lineage if you share the genes.

I would give it a simple name because there’s no way I’m writing that each time.

I think it would be had form to just rename it but for your convenience some kind of shorthand like HBSxsky2 or something.

That’s what i would do anyway.

Oh I forgot to say what I do: I use a text expander. So if I type : p1 without the space, I have it set up to auto fill 1 - Frozen In Time because that’s my “plant 1” for my current grow.

Because I dislike having to try to intuit wtf someone is talking about 12 weeks into a grow and I have no idea what the 15 random letters as a cross abbreviation mean  I also started putting strains that were commonly abbreviated into it so I could remind myself.

So I have it written out in mine. Maybe it’s annoying to read it a bunch! I don’t know! But whatever, it helps me keep track of it better anyway.

I’m not sure about any “rules” not really my bag.
But I’ve been growing various plants, for decades, and just as an act of general respect if Im sharing those genetics to someone I think is going to do something with them, I provide all pertinent info available, about lineage and history, as well as any information to that variants care.
Other than that, what I call the produce that plant produces, is generally referred to by its smell and flavor profile, that way the person receiving the gifted produce, knows what flavor to expect from whatever dish, or “bowl” they are preparing.
If the flavor or “bouquet” isn’t interesting enough to describe, in general I’m not interested in that plant enough to worry about what it’s called.
And historically, I would guess no one’s else is going to care what you call it either in that case.
Nothing worse than hoping for skittle flavored vanilla frosting cookies, and getting frosty meh. Buds.

Jeff Lowenfels, in his book DIY auto cannabis, included an interesting chapter in the future of cannabis, and there was a lot about naming conventions. A call for something more understandable, and probably scientific. I doubt it will ever happen but the perspective was refreshing.

It makes perfect sense for people like us, who care and perhaps value transparency, but market pressures will make it impossible to see through.

What naming system would people want to see? I’m genuinely curious.

Good luck with your hubba bubba cross!

Since it’s for my personal stash and I don’t intend on attempting to breed/reverse or sell it, I’ll note it out as an abbreviation of the sorts. Thanks everyone for input!!!
