I know Blue Dream has its haters and lovers. Its rise the cult status popularity has different origin stories. Some people claim it was easy to grow and had large yields while others claim it was a magical buzz. Ive always enjoyed anything crossed with Blueberry, but Ive noticed over the years the Blue Dream is not the same, nor are the blue strains in general. The essence of the blue is there but its not the same buzz I remember getting in a Denver dispensary years ago. I recently tried some BD from a local dispo and its definitely not the same. Id love to hear your theories , comments etc… on this topic if you feel like chiming in .
Might want to start with this thread - DJ short old world genetics blueberry - #10 by Kraven
Since DJ Short Blueberry is half of what goes into Blue Dream.
I think somewhere in that thread someone hypothesized that DJ Short may have lost one of his breeding pair or something that made up the Blueberry.
Thanks! Gonna have a read
I have the original blue Dream ( Santa Cruz cut) on my menu
@Gabysi where could I find your menu and prices?
I was there when it became popular and saw some of the first trays of clones that went into the public’s hands. It blew up because of yields and ease of growth while still having a high enough quality and look to sell to the clubs . Most other heavy yielding commercial strains were lower in quality and wouldn’t make it to a shelf. There were some better heavier yielding things around like gdp but outside they were so prone to rot on the north coast growing them was depressing , blue dream had just the right spacing and density to get huge and survive the humidity .
I watched it go from less than ten hands , to where everybody I knew was growing it, to the flood and to the collapse.
I’ve held the cut this whole time ,it’s been over 17 years. I rarely even smoke it but keep it because I have two family members who love it and she has been with me so long it would feel weird to not have her. She breeds incredibly well , anything I’ve seen bred to her gets bigger and better so she has a permanent place in the stable.
If you grow blue dream indoors on hydro she comes out more blueberry forward terp wise , if you grow her outside she comes out with more haze influence in the smells and taste.
Had a friend call it blue pebbles for awhile because people claimed to be sick of blue dream, but they loved the blue pebbles ….smh
I would have been happier if I could have kept the trainwreck cut we had before blue dream took over. I had to dedicate my personal grow to anything but blue dream just to have something else to smoke for many years. I’ll post a picture of a ten+ foot blue dream that is currently outdoors a little later when I get to the spot.
Dispensaries are notorious liars. I seen it so many times, they sell this variety and use the name, but its not what they claim. Its one of my big issues with the industry, they lie off their ass, and get away with it. There is no truth in packaging. Not saying everyone, but definitely the big boys.
17 years holding a cut. Nice! I love the persistence. The old school stories are also the bombdiggity! I think I like the history just as much as the smoke.
It was around longer in the friend’s circle but that’s how long I’ve kept her under my watch. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago at the same time.
Yeah I was going to say something similar haha bc homegrown is going to blow anything commercial out of the water. Who knows what you may have picked up that was labeled blue dream prob not the real deal
Santa cruz cut isn’t the original. The original was highly safeguarded and used for concentrate. It would have a short violent high that would last 15 or so mins and would be 98% thc when concentrated if i remember correctly. @backyardboogie420 knew the crew and would extract it for them, he was also close with the crew of GG#4 and would hangout drinking and smoking at his place.
Gg#4 was from a hermie chem seed, if boogie was here he would verify this himself.
@Okiekat888 I’m definitely a Blue Dream Lover since circa 2008! Great strain imo! ![]()

Another one of those strains I hear about. I’d love to try it at some point. So much argument over the cut, its origins, who’s using it in breeding, who isn’t. Is it a varietal seed cultivar or a clone only. I hope at some point I can try the real thing. I’ve heard it’s super medicinal.
The way you are describing it, sounds like blue terror, not blue dream… Might work well at a drowning pool concert.
It really was, people would literally pass out after a dab of it!
I got it in 2010 and it was already considered an old cut then. Most BD clones are fake now so that’s probably why it seems different. I built a tolerance to it quickly so I only smoked it occasionally. I brought a huge bud to a music festival once and everyone who smoked it was blown away by how good it was. They said it was the best BD they ever smoked. Probably the first real deal BD they ever had but didn’t know it.
It does do extracts realy well, I’ve never called it the Santa Cruz cut nor did anybody else back then , it was just blue dream. The first real big grows of blue dream were in Mendocino and Sonoma county.
Was always told it was blueberry x super silver haze.
Everybody I know with it ditched it once it was hard to move , a few asked for it back years later. It’s def out there but like many strains I’m sure knock offs, s1s and seed grows people label as blue dream are in circulation as well.
I’ve seen a lot of seed grows and they tend to lean towards blueberry and the real one has a heavy haze influence in the growth , structure and flavor.
I have a personal hatred towards blue dream because it’s “mid”. Once bluedream blew up a lot of growers scrapped their genetics growing it for profit. I’d look ask around and get whatever wasn’t bluedream, bubba kush, master kush, og, ssh, plat kush, anything but blue dream. It’s still still around and comes up occasionally.
Smoked a lot of Blue Dream, Trainwreck, Green Crack, Sour Diesel and OG Variants in the mid00s-early10s. Platinum Bubba hahahaha
