I dig the fan configuration for being able to evenly saturate, but I could see the benefit of a cone nozzle or even a soaker type nozzle too
That’s no joke. I’m running a single plant SCROG right now and I put the screen at 8-9" over the pot…I had to become a contortionist to water her, and forget about defoliation!
Hmm, a soaker would be interesting for some applications indeed.
Lol ya I am notorious for keeping plants bushed out pretty low as well. I am just not a big fan of super tall plants in general, so I try to keep them low.
Update on the 2x4 bed. It has been a bit of a struggle to get these plants happy. Sadly I had to let the bed dry down and then hit it with some tea a number of times before their roots started to bounce back.
They got to where they can take a full load of water and love it. Even though they are not at the level of health I would like them to be before flower, I am running out of room in there and cant keep waiting for peak health.
I have started some heavy defoliation under the screen and a little up top to get some light to more little tops. I will be putting in another layer of trellis and getting the last few gaps filled in the tent and then we will be flipping it over to flower.
You’ve done what you can for them; now its time to let them stand on their own!
Flower free little plants!!!
What are your current cover crops in there?
I’m planning on borage, vetch, basil, marigold, and chamomile, so I’m curious what others are using.
I am just using the 12 seed cover crop from BuildASoil.
It has:
- Flax - Carter
- Clover - Yellow Sweet
- Clover - White Dutch
- Clover - Medium Red
- Clover - Crimson
- Lentils - Indianhead
- Millet - White Proso
- Vetch - Hairy
- Vetch - Common
- Cowpeas - Red Ripper
- Buckwheat - Mancan
- Pea - Forage
That’s awesome coverage for the space, I’m also running that size space as a scrog, I really enjoy checking in on your journal to compare. I just ordered a BAS kit last night, getting bored with hydro nutes and Coco.
How much space is usually between the 2 nets? I always have a hard time getting rid of bud sites.
Ya it is always rough to take material off the plants, I usually just try to get rid of the useless material on the bottom of the plant and at the start of the canopy and then remove upper fan leaves that are blocking branches/future little colas. Distance between the screens for me just depends on what’s going on. In the 4x4 tent my first screen is to make the canopy and the second is just to support the spears as they grow. But the 2x4 tent I am going to use the second screen just to get the canopy lined out a little more before I flip. I would say 12-18in would be best between the screens, but I just let the situation dictate what I feel like doing.
Thanks bud. Aah that’s great to hear, did you get a take and bake kit I assume?
Uug… Out of likes…
I tried once and ended up just taking the net off. Idk how people decide where to start the canopy, when to add the second screen. I just read things like “installed the net, going to let the plant grow into it” wth does that even mean lmao I know the second one would have to catch the stretch bc it would be difficult to put a net over buds. But what about the first one? The one that says “this is where my canopy will start”
The higher you place the screen, the longer you have to veg if you plan on filling it with a true SCROG.
For a relatively short veg I say 8-12 inches, and I install my screen after she’s been topped twice, LSTd, and transplanted into her final pot.
As she grows up through the screen, if a growth tip gets a couple inches above the screen, she gets pulled back down and moved to an adjacent square, ad infinitum until the plant has “grown into the screen”.
Well I would take into account the height of your tent to start off with. Then I would assess if the branches/material that the plants have at that moment would be able to fill or start filling your tent or canopy space (pull branches down and get a rough idea how far it can spread). Usually my plants have been topped and have a few main branches to bend out under a screen, so I arrange them to where they seem the best and start to put the screen in above the plants so I can start sliding the corners down and pulling branches under the trellis.
There are a number of screens/trellises that you can put in so the technique used may vary. You can get some that are made to size and just clip on the tent and are made out of stretchy chord, and others that you have to string across and secure yourself. I opted for the cheaper option and got some netting I have to cut down and install myself.
I usually connect the corners of the screen to the corners of the tent with zip ties or reusable zip ties so I can get it roughly installed and then slide it down as I navigate branches under the screen to be held down. Once I get it on the plants and want to get it finished up, I start tightening the corners up a bit.
I tend to find that there is more slack than I want in the screen. So like I did in the 4x4 tent I put some supports across the tent poles and zip ties the trellis all the way around the tent so that whole level was tight and able to hold things down better. The 2x4 screen had a bunch of slack in the center so I ended up having to pull the corners down past the canopy to tighten some things up more.
When I got trellis netting, I did not really think I cared about the size of the squares it had, but honestly the stuff I got is about 2x the size I would like to be using. Having smaller squares would allow me to get the canopy lined out a bit better.
I usually just trellis the plants and then keep pulling material under the screen to fill the canopy gaps till things are growing up too much and its much harder to try to get things under the screen. Then I either get the show on the road and add one later if I need, or add another screen and finish the canopy a bit more before flipping to flower. Hoping I wont need a 3rd screen for supporting branches in the 2x4, but things are not going as planned so I may have to at some point.
Lots of factors though: How big are the plants you are trying to trellis, how big do you want to get them or the canopy, the less material you start with, the more trellis work you may need to do and may lead to needing 2 screens just to line the base canopy out. Also what strain are you running? I try to run stuff that wont stretch to the moon. If they stretch a lot, you may be able to roughly fill the canopy sooner and flip to flower sooner so it doesn’t get out of hand.
I don’t go for the fattest colas I usually just go for the most tops I can get to pop up, so I run into some hard decisions with removing or not removing leaves. It sucks to remove a few big fan leaves off the biggest tops to the lower branches can get light and shoot up (depending on when you remove the leaves and how healthy the plant is).
Hope some of that helps ya, I just fly by the seat of my pants and make a game plan as the plants dictate, so feel free to ask more questions or hit me up with a situation or pictures or whatever bud. I am no expert but ill try to help if I can heh.
Same here! This way, if you don’t like the answer from “mom”, you can always go ask “dad”
Lol! Exactly. So many ways to skin the cat.
The trade off here is that, unlike having the screen attached to the pot, it’s not possible to take your plant out, or rotate it any longer. I use the screen on the posts method just like you, but there are times I wish my plant could be mobile.
Agreed, they are locked down pretty much once its in. I only use the trellis if everything is going to stay in place otherwise in the past I usually would just super crop, tie down or use 3d printed training clips to make the canopy with multiple pots/plants.
I’ve been meaning to pick up some of those trainings clips. I always see ads for them, and they look real handy. In doing an auto run next, so it’s gonna be all low stress, and I’m not gonna fuck with the screen.
