Yes, which makes it a real proven method! 
If my memory serves me correctly, which I cannot guarantee, it was declared illegal to teach to the public in maybe the late 1600s thru the early 1800s. I just remember my son telling me that bit of history. I was both amazed and in complete understanding of why that would have been done.
