quick question, why do people say maths when they shorten mathematics and not math? why bother to shorten a word then leave an ending that sounds like you have a mouthful of marbles?

Why do we call it the grocery store? Or a pin number?
My neighbors growing up pronounced the letter r as “ar-uh” and thought 210 was less than 120 because ten is less than twenty
Maybe some people see that by pluralizing it, it recognizes the different disciplines of mathematics.
Also, mathematics is itself a plural, should the shortened version not be plural?
