The purpose of asking patrons to donate to various charities at the register is so the corporations can use this to pad their charitable contributions on the balance sheet and acquire a tax write off. When corporations act on behalf of the community it must also serve corporate interests.
hell, we name them around here and let them live so they can take down the flies. sometimes we even go around and take the webs down. i also leave the dead flies on the walls or ceilings when they smear after i kill them as a warning to the other flies. it doesn’t work but makes me feel better about it.
Uh what? Yeah… that…hmm. I’ve got no words 
I especially like when it comes out to an even dollar amount. They’re still prompted to ask if we want to “round up” the total by a full dollar. It’s a great scam to get credits on income tax from your customers who are providing your income in the first place, though, so I’m not surprised. There’s a whole industry built around telling people to feel guilty for not giving enough back, so why not take it a little further and tell them to feel guilty about not giving away their tax credits for giving back?
