Perhaps in private lounge area now that many respected members got their regular status back.
Maybe we should change the name of the thread from free seeds and clones. Or dare I say move it to the private lounge?
I hate to not include new folks, bit then they would at least have been around the block.
Just my 2 cents. Don’t hate.
That WOULD make the private lounge something to actually strive for…
A valid thought. Lots of new people come here and contribute a ton but like today some just pop up and say “I want free stuff”. I am all for getting seeds to all but the goal is to OverGrow the world, not supply free beans to all. A certain amount of activity, a grow journal, some site interactions are all good things and a way to earn your spot at the table.
I haven’t stopped in that Free Seeds thread in a long time. I saw the post count continue into the thousands almost overnight and I stopped even looking in now.
It definitely ran off a lot of the really experienced and older members. It’s been sort of depressing. Did we even have that free seeds thread 2 years ago? I sure miss the crowd that was on here when I joined. I’m really glad some stuck it out to hopefully keep a good old school vibe that outlasts the random visitors.
I have a lot of seeds to shuck and could easily give out to new growers as I haven’t grown most of them. It’s a lot of freaking work. I need a wife and a couple of strong teen age boys.
Maybe we should create a bank of donated crosses that we’ve all done but not let anyone grow, to supply the demand for really new members and first time growers. I know all of my crosses are from pretty good genetics so they wouldn’t create bad weed by any means and could lead to gems. I always wanted to learn to grow better before taking my best seeds to practice on.
Maybe I could get all of these seeds I have organized and donated to @Sebring maybe, to be a pool for novice growers. I have to find the time to make it happen first.
I hope the frenzy passes as I’d love to see some of the missing members back on here.
I agree. And I know because I don’t have a grow journal, some have been dissuaded, not gonna name names. I have posted pictures of my plants in many spots on here. I just am hesitant to journal since I’m not I’m a legal state. I’ll accept that folks don’t want to send me anything because of it. No hard feelings here. I’m Very active here. At least I think I am.
Maybe do a separate thread in there for the long time members and just give away f2 or random chucks in the free place
That’s a good idea have a established member area for the higher quality seeds
Theirs a difference with you as your very active all over. Many of these members only participate in a few specific locations. Specifically giveaways. And CO OPs and closed coops for some reason?
We never had more than about 80 people total before on the co-op grows. It was pretty laid back and seemed to work way better. Not sure why all of the sudden the place got flooded with seed seekers… It’s just a different generation of people that never had to deal with the jail time and loss of money involved in a bust. In the old days if you asked somebody you weren’t familiar with for seeds or anything, you’d likely never talk to them again. No explaining. if you were too pushy people labeled you as a narc, for real.
Hard to explain to people that didn’t live it.
Very valid and understandable points you and @OleReynard make. Appreciate you both sharing your perspective on this.
Just checked my blue velvet coop and it was around 55 people that I don’t recognize at all. How can they be so inactive and sign up like they deserve something. That’s 1/3 I feel dont even deserve any of those seeds.
That’s where bulk of my freebies and testers are going, is to Sebring
I figure whatever he can get for pretty damn good beans is fine and helping another’s site out.
Theyre pretty economically priced.
I never would’ve thought about asking for free beans.
When I’m offered, I almost always offer back something as a thank you. If I don’t it’s because I’ve already established a relationship.
But yeah, alot of new people saying gimme gimme. Depending on the person and their activity I might send something or say good luck searching. I really want to help everyone, but sometimes it does seem pushy how they are trying to get them.
I did have a few people like @nefrella who sent me stuff when I was new, but I sent her things back later. I hope she’s ok, haven’t seen her in a while here.
I really like the private lounge giveaway idea for better seeds. I’ll probably do my next giveaway there to drive participation.
Holy biscuits nefrella is back!! Go wish her well
I agree it’s definitely ballsy and pretty shameless to blatantly ask for seeds. I actually skipped the first couple free seed runs I was eligible for mainly because I didn’t feel worthy and have always steered away from hand outs. If you haven’t even started a thread or don’t even have somewhat of a rapport amongst the community the free seeds thread should be invisible for them imo. And let’s be fair unless you live in fucking Greenland or somewhere similar you can always attain seeds, I was collecting and labelling bagseeds from the age of 15. When I grew in Europe I’d physically go to Amsterdam to buy seeds to run, too paranoid to have them sent to my address let alone ask some stranger online.
Don’t get wrong I love a good trivia game for some seeds or a good ol’ DIBS but most of anything I’ve won is getting gifted to friends in Australia to grow out and send pics not for hording.
Side note: I also heard someone say if you google free seeds Overgrow comes up… as we say in Australia “that’s not cricket”(not cool)
I agree with everything you said in that post 100% @GMan and everything discussed here
I chose my username as a way to pay homage and tribute to all the old timers for everything they’ve done and still do. All the risks taken and jail time served, lives lost, families destroyed. I’m not old in terms of age, but have always been an old soul and an Oldtimer at heart.
Many times in my life it’s been them who have really helped me the most and continue to guide me with their years of wisdom and experience. It is something I value highly and feel is very precious to me. It’s also something undervalued by most it seems, sadly.
Just this morning I was hanging out with my older friend, over twice my age. The stories he tells can give me a good laugh, but some can really hit me deep. Today was one of those deep days. Maybe that’s why I felt so motivated to write this post.
For many, it’s not until they lose something, or someone, that they truly realize what it is they have lost. I have a deep appreciation for the ones who’ve come before me, and utterly grateful to be able to stand on the shoulders of giants.
I had no idea earlier this year when I joined that free seeds were even a thing. @CADMAN even helped me with that auto fem seed giveaway before I ever even accepted my first offer of free seeds. (Thanks again CADMAN, for the 100th time, lol)
What I love most about this place is being able to connect with some awesome people and read about great experiences and amazing stories, past and present. Being able to ask questions and find solid advice from guys that have been around doing this from before I was even born!
If there were no more seeds given out on OG, would I still come on here?? You’re damn right I would! I wouldn’t trade the company I’ve found on here for anything. I appreciate everyone here, more than this post could ever say.
Sorry for this long ass reply. I contemplated just hitting the trash can button a couple times, but maybe someone, somewhere, needed to read this…
Unfortunately this is very true.
This is what I was attempting with the group runs.
Still working on
That’s how I got into this game… Friend of mine old enough to be my grandfather taught me some things and guided me.
In his honor & help We made Kosher Daddy so he knew In his heart he helped make something many others would enjoy & that made him smile.
Yes 100%
Ps. Experience & wisdom are the names we give to explain our past mistakes & choices, us youngings should always value what older generations say, you never know when you will learn a valuable lesson based on someone else’s experience & wisdom
Yeah, that’s cool you’re both thinking of that. Folks that are much older have so much history and experience and are usually happy to talk about it. It’s the sort of thing others won’t ever have.
I’ve always told others to cherish the older peeps and go and spend time and talk with them. Once they go, their interpretation of their own personal history is gone with them, forever.
I’m always thinking of a couple of special people when I mention this. You’d be surprised at the stories you can hear. Older people have no reason to hold back or worry about backlash because many of their friends are already dead.
