The issue is always framed in a political light, but it’s far simpler than that. Background checks and licensing. I’m from Canada and I gave all the guns to my friend who was licensed when they said you had to register the guns. Glad to get rid of them! I put up an electric fence instead, it scares off the mountain lions.
Maybe they’re not making eye contact because they know they’re the ones who voted for ridiculous “open carry” laws and voted for the politicians who championed that nonsense and feel the ever-so-slightest bit of shame. Not that I expect them to change. People are way too dug in to their own politics to ever admit that,”Hey, maybe I made the wrong choice…”
That’s what I think is so fucking bizarre. It’s the Politics of Fear. Keep people scared. It’s why I’ve basically turned off the news and all social media.
We had a great time last Saturday, hung out with my best friend, ate a bunch of shrooms, but then, at the end of the night, before we went to bed, my friend was like,”Are all the doors locked? Did you lock all the doors?” And I told her,”Who cares? There’s nothing to worry about, nobody’s gonna break in to our house.” This sorta “living in fear” thing really does not work for me at all.
Anyway, sorry you got a bunch of weird horribleness going on around you right now. I think we all know the solution, it’s just that too many people don’t want to recognize it, for whatever fucked-up reason.
Treat ‘em like a car. 1. You have to take a class and a test before you can buy one. 2. You have to register them and renew your registration every year. 3. You have to purchase insurance for every gun you own. That really doesn’t seem like too much to ask.
It’s not hard to figure out.
Absolutely there is what I agree a feeling of shame and guilt but these simple minded rednecks will never admit it. Their solution is to fortify schools till they resemble Federal Prisons with razor wire and bullet proof windows and doors. To protect our children from other citizens. The solution is obvious.
I would go a step further. A National Buy Back of Assault Rifles and military style weapons. You have 90 days to turn them in for cash. After a designated period of time it becomes a felony to be in possession of one with a mandatory minimum jail time. If I were king!
The bad thing is, bad guys like the one that shot up that school, don’t give a rat’s ass about laws. Its against the law to shoot up a school and yet he did it anyways. Just saying.
While I agree with the ban on assault weapons, I also think that a person should be at least 21 and pass a background check before being able to purchase any weapon.
Yeah, but again, these gun-nuts have their politics so fucking ingrained that they would never do that. “Because it’s un-American!” I realize it’s worked in other countries, but we are sooooo unlike every other country, for whatever reason. Ours is a Gun Culture. Very strange. It’s like, you’re not a True Right-Winger unless you only give up your guns when they “pry them from my cold dead hands” or whatever that stupid t-shirt said back in the day.
And therein lies the problem. When people spend all day every day listening to the reasons why they SHOULDN’T admit that they’re wrong, they’re never gonna change. It doesn’t matter that it never occurs to them,”Hey, maybe my elected representative is coming out in favor of less gun control and not more because they’re being paid by the NRA…” They’re right-wingers and the right-wing position is,”Guns good.” This is the result of 30+ years of indoctrination.
Sure, but how would that actually work? I guess just issue a warrant and if they get pulled over or whatever, take them to jail? Because I sure as fuck am not gonna volunteer to be the guy who goes knocking on gun nuts’ doors to be like,”Hey, I’m here to take your unregistered guns,” haha! I’m not sure how much you’d have to pay me to do that, but it’d be in the low-eight figures, at least haha.
That’d be awesome haha. I wish you were king. If not you, then me hahaha…
I don’t ever see this country taking guns from any citizens in it. It’s ingrained in our constitution and founding of this country to have them.
If they did somehow take all the guns back, there would just be more stabbings and other ways to kill people, than guns.
The issue is clearly a mental health issue. When ~64% of the country lives paycheck to paycheck, supply chain shortages, inflation, completely polarized government… it’s pretty easy to see why people are lashing out all over the place. We’ve had 1.5x the amount of shootings as there are days so far in this year.
However, If you look at crimes/population and places that HAVE banned guns, like the UK, they have almost 10x the assault rates we do.
But anybody who shoots up anything, anybody who uses a gun in any crime, even if it’s just a liquor store holdup, obviously doesn’t give a shit about “laws.” Does that mean we shouldn’t make access to guns more difficult?
Back when I was single and was doing a ton of blow, I’d go out every night and pick up a chick. On the rare nights when I didn’t pick a woman up, I’d get home around 4am and post on Craigslist “casual encounters” section and wait about an hour for a woman to respond. If one didn’t and I had the money, I’d go on backpage and see if there was a good-looking prostitute still available. Craigslist “casual encounters” (which, living in LA, was probably the most amazing thing ever in the history of the world haha) and backpage don’t exist anymore and now I have no clue how I’d hook up with a woman at 4am, if I was still single.
I don’t think you have to be a genius to figure out that the less things are readily available, the harder it is to find them. Just look at the current supply-chain shit. This really isn’t that difficult.
The Tony Martin uk case
The Man defended his property from a burglar and shot him then got charged with murder and was jailed for life. The man was defending his property ffs.
Ban ALL guns I say.
Yeah that can happen in the US depending on the state. Here in Illinois its illegal to boobytrap your home. If someone breaks into your house to kill you, and breaks their leg, lives and goes to jail, he can still sue you for breaking his leg in your home even tho he broke in and trespassed.
Other States, like Texas, have “castle laws”, you can legally shoot and kill anyone that trespasses on your property, save for law enforcement and whatnot of course.
My argument here is what if someone took a wrong turn and ended up on private land then got shot for making a mistake??? Even google maps has been known to make a mistake.
You don’t need a gun or knife to kill someone. Your hands can do the job easily. Guns and knives are just “easier” to use.
There were attacks on school children in China and in France in recent years. In both incidents a crazy fucker barged into an elementary school and attacked children. The difference is that in both incidents there were injuries but no deaths. Why? They were armed with knives, not Assault Rifles. This guy fired 30 rounds in about 30 seconds. 19 dead kids.
The 2nd Amendment was written when people had to protect themselves from bears, Indians and the like. It was written by a bunch of drunk old white guys in a bar!
75% kill rate. A knife can kill BUT most of the time a knife wound is non fatal although it hurts like a mother f#cker. Yeah I’ve been there.
Hopefully the USA eventually take the uk stance on guns and ignore the ancient old piece of parchment yous live your life’s by.
You’ve got your numbers wrong. Look at the table under International Comparison linked here and you’ll see that the UK has around 3x maybe 4x the number of fistfights (aka assaults) of the US. That’s a lot different than homicides. And, consider that drinking is the national pastime of the British Isles, I think we know where that stat comes from.
Much more interesting to me in this discussion is the case of the UK implementing STRICT gun laws after their last school shooting in 1996:
It clearly had a net positive effect of immediately decreasing gun violence. That direct correlation is borne out in basically all western countries that have implemented strict gun control laws. And, while I agree with you that mental health is an issue related to US gun deaths, by far the easiest mitigation strategy is gun control restrictions, and to potentially outlaw or severely restrict the purchase and ownership of guns not made for hunting, such as assault rifles and handguns - the primary use of which is for killing people. Cuz we ain’t fixing our mental health issues so easily.
100% agree, and I grew up on a farm, hunting & fishing, going to NRA meetings with my dad and neighbors.
I’m sure I’ll hear from the “God Bless the USA Lee Greenwood Groupies” But I’ve had enough of this bullshit “American Exceptionalism” If this is who we are then the “exceptional” need to own it.
Bro when it comes to guns as long as the laws prevent killing of innocent kids and people I don’t care if my numbers are wrong. Obviously I respect your opinion 100% but you seriously can’t deny that if guns were banned these horrible times would happen less often.
