if not be hard to prove he had anything to do with it i guess ??

Yes. He was standing right next to the plant and grinning like an idiot. lol  I understand why he was so proud of it. But he broke the first rule of pot farming. “Never show your plants to anyone. “ And sure as hell never take a picture of yourself standing next to it. :joy: I wonder if he had a tingling sensation while he was having that picture taken? Like this wont end in a good way.:flushed:

Hahaha hard to resist sometimes, poor fella …

Definitely this, when I was younger and wet behind the ears I learned this the hard way, and more than once. Now other than OG it’s all on a ‘needs to know’ basis. The other one is to stay the hell away from anyone involved in powders.

I managed to find a pic of some Old Mother; not mine but it gives a good idea of it…

Damn it man! That sumbitch is huge! How long does one of those monsters flower? :flushed:

They will usually flower till late April/mid May here, depending on your latitude, a bit earlier the further north you go just because they start a bit earier. Flowering will normally start around February.

Yeah that ball shape is the Thai influence. SE Asian varieties are where you get big yields outside here, but as I say, hard to hide!

I understand “hard to hide”. In my area we used to have helicopters fly around all the time. The local sheriffs office has been up my ass for 40+ years. One year I thought they were going to land on the roof of my camper. They were so low that I could have hit one in the head with a rock. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I have outlived 3 elected sheriffs and now it is legal in my state. The best revenge is living well. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Would this be a trait that the Oaxaca types that are so close to the equator but still grow in high mountains? I hear that some who grow this type have a good tolerance to cold. Must be a reason for this that is not so apparent but like you say there is a gene for rot tolerance in the tropical types. DJ said that he had better luck with the mountain types rather than coastal low elevation types.

It could well be, I thought that maybe the original plants came from a cooler wet climate, but if so it’s a long lingering trait that hasn’t had any use for quite a while, I would have expected acclimatization from all the years in Oz, it could also be just a general resistance/resilience, that might make more sense maybe?

We’ve gone way off topic and I feel like I’ve hijacked the thread lol… But it has reminded me that I do have some png gold seeds that I collected up north, not many and they are getting a bit older now so it’s probably time I saw if I can sprout some. To me the png gold we used to get was every bit as good as the so called MM that most bush weed seemed to become for a while. And I preferred the fruity almost pineapple smell and taste. We got pretty spoiled in the north because it’s part of a smuggling route for all sorts of contraband down from Asia via png and through Cairns, so it always seemed to have nicer smoke around than a lot of the cabbage I found down south.

It’s awesome to see so much interest in these old heirlooms, a lot of them became endangered or extinct over the years.

Does anyone have a picture of a verified png ? Maybe I should look back through this thread.

Well someone gave me some png gold and thinking it would be fun to grow them where I am at. 3500’ and will have to light dep them to finish or grow inside. These might have a trait that makes them flower when certain age. Some say 18 weeks so will need to put that on the to do list.

An automatic PNG why not?

That would be nice to see, these types are more varied depending on their location so good to see how environmental factors influence them.

Hey @slain . I love to learn about these old legendary plants. I am the youngest of 6 kids and all my brothers and sisters were cool. They were in high school in the 1960s. I remember when “Panama Red” hit my area. I was a little kid but I remember. My brothers smoked that shit constantly. Places like Australia and PNG were almost mythological in my isolated part of the world. They still are. I like to germinate these old genetics and see what I can find. I love the variety and possibility. I imagine that perhaps that is how @wallyduck felt when he started breeding “Ducksfoot”. At least I like to think so.

ive seen sativas tolerate up to minus 10 C ,
all the growth around them was burnt and dead from the frost ,
but they remained untouched ,
and yes this was in the tropics , it can get that cold in the high altitude areas ,
we regularly get frosts where i live , well every winter , and occasionally it drops below zero …

anyhow i thought a lot about it , my conclusion was , they have to come from a cold country originally , aka around the himalayas or similar sort of cold country ,
otherwise they would not be able to tolerate those sort of temperatures ,
they have adapted to the warm tropics , but retain the ability to resist those freezing nights …
its a pretty tough plant …

the seeds i grew of png gold when i was younger were fruity ,
and very resinous , really lovely pot , very memorable indeed,

we also got some import stuff , which wasnt so great ,
it even had a salt water smell to it ,
smelt like the ocean a bit ,
probably spent 6 months in a leaky boat , lol …
the smoke was ok , but nothing to write home about …

ive got a photo of some png i grew somewhere here ,
it was amazing weed , even after tolerating the wet finish it had ,
it was extremely potent , the sort of stuff that had a fella mumbling to himself about how high he was , hahaha …

Here’s a current PNG grow. Both plants have a sweet and fruity aroma and have some time to finish. I’m still hoping to find another Cat Piss pheno which was really fun.
Used a few males from this grow to pollinate a Zamaldelica x Kali China and saved a bunch of pollen to cross with AKBB Northern Lights.

That looks great, and more heft to it than most of the ones I’ve seen. You are probably right about cold tolerance being genetic, I guess it all came from cold locations at some point in history.

Yeah I meant to say in my last post that the locally grown png gold was far superior to the compressed import stuff. There would have to still be some PNG along with SE Asian grown in the Daintree, I can’t imagine anything else would survive, also Cooktown grows its fair share of weed, so I wonder what they are growing? I reckon it’s the old growers in the small regional areas that would still hold a lot of this stuff. I know just on the tablelands I found a whole lot of old varieties that are non existent anywhere else, like a step back in time, in a good way.

we got a bunch of old seeds from a local as my seeds had been stolen ,
by my son , ffs , hahaha , he still regrets it ,
anyhow i wish id known how good some of it would be and made some seed , or kept some somehow,
they were a lot better than id expected …
it was compressed stuff we got in melbourne too , not even comparable to the locally grown stuff,
things are a bit rough in png , sometimes when money is involved , things get rushed etc

ive seen some cooktown weed here ,
a few batches , they checked all the boxes , sadly , all the wrong ones , hahaha ,
im sure they can grow good stuff there , but i didnt see any ,
but i have a mate who lives there and he is trying to raise the bar a little getting some haze stuff i have for them to grow ,
its just the process after harvest i see a lot of folks fall down with ,
they dont dry it properly , or store it well , and its ruined by the time it gets to market…

there is some panama red down the road i know the guys still have , they have said a few times they would give me seed , ive given them heaps , but im yet to get any of it ,
ive seen a lot of elbows of it , and its great for old landrace stuff ,
good old workhorse , vigorous , but not as pretty as some modern stuff ,
but its important to save those old types , they are the backbone of the modern stuff …

i wish fet was still around , he was on the tablelands , im sure we had friends in common , but i never met him personally …

:joy: Yeah I guess old varieties doesn’t always mean good hey? I had to sort through a ton of those Millaa plants to find the good ones from the ropey ones. Same with some beans I got from a guy down Tully falls road. They are all a mix of SE Asian and PNG in those areas I’m pretty sure, you definitely get some of them that do that yellowing out and self trimming at the end like the PNG can do.

Things are bit different in Cooktown though man, that black mountain up there gives me the creeps! Amazing place, but spooky. I can totally imagine them just growing generations of shit weed up there and just not knowing any better
