Preservation seed run with afghan genetics

Too bad you couldn’t bring any beans back with you. What province(s) were you in, and were the plants always stocky in the East? Leafy too?

Pics of the 4th Beldia plant. The nicest one as far as buds go. Trimmers nightmare, hashmakers dream.

I’m believing so.

Good observation. I think your right. Not many Afghans have those small leaves like Mazar. How good is this Maple Leaf? It’s pretty famous, so I’m guessing it’s worth rogueing out the hermies…

I have a mli that I found in some mazars from directly over there.
Bred the mli back to the mazar, been too busy with other things to go into them.
The mli leaves were smaller than the mazars yet.

Why is it that it was called Maple Leaf indica? Were the leaflets fused together, or is the middle Leaf extra wide or something?

Theyre smaller leaved, look almost like that oriental maple bush.

If I remember correctly the mli and the mazar both came from the same valley/region.
Seems to me 3 years ago I got inquisitive enough to look it up.

Maple leaf update-
all sprouted good taproots in the seed soak. one looked slightly malformed.
4 were planted saturday night, the remaining 4 were planted sunday morning.

7/8 are now above soil, still in their shells, and looking healthy.
The malformed seedling looks like it won’t go anywhere, but I’ll give it a few days.

maple leaf update-
I’m very happy with the progress these have made, and with their vigor and health in general. These seeds were purchased in 2016.
These have interesting shiny silver inner membranes, instead of the usual translucent or pale green membrane. I can only remember seeing this trait once before, most likely when I popped the first two seeds from this pack in 2016.
I might have seen this in one or two of bodhi’s Dank Sinatra f1 as well, which contains 78 LA Affy, another 70’s vintage afghani.

Seedlings looked good yesterday morning. 3 were ready to come out of their shells, but not ready to shed their membrane. 2 were ready to pop off their shell and inner membrane. 2 still have their shells intact and weren’t ready to drop them. The malformed seedling is out of its shell at the surface of the soil, and looks like it just might pull through.

I’m about to check them again, will post another update.
I can make a dedicated thread for this, but because the goal is to create stock for other members to use in a community preservation, I figure this is as good a place as any. And as the project progresses, we might find a few members willing to grow these for preservation.

I’m planning to post updates only at crucial points in the grow process. This will give everyone some idea of the traits this line offers without an overwhelming number of posts.

final germ results- 6 out of 8 produced healthy vigorous seedlings.
I lost one which failed to shed its membrane naturally, and damped off. The malformed seedling has no true leaves, a mutation I see all too often in middle eastern landraces. It probably will not advance past this stage.

The smallest seed remains in it’s shell, but I can see that it is growing and has a healthy stem. In this case with very tiny seeds, they usually just need some extra time for the cotyledons to develop. Once the start leaves have had some time to grow in, they will pop the shell off.

The remaining 5 seedlings are out of the woods, and safely established. The first true leaves are narrow and pointy, with a ‘v’ shape, instead of the usual bilateral symmetry.

6 is a decent outcome in terms of the size of my tents. I will be able to grow 6 decently large plants all in the same tent for a good open pollination.

We’ll consider the loss of these 2 seedlings as natural selection.
Unless I see a problem, I don’t think I will be doing any further selection, just an open pollination.

I was going to suggest it, it is a really interesting strain and wether you do that seedrun or not having your diary will be a great help for others willing to grow it. Stay safe … :mask:

I happen to have some yunnan and Macau Provence seeds. If you are interested. This is pertaining to the Black yeti. Not sure if still relatable as this was a while ago. You are just the only other person I’ve read having stock from the same area as me.

I’ve heard it’s the Vegas over there but even crazier. I was rather excited when I got the opportunity to get my hands on some. Some others here I’ve sent some to. Schedule doesn’t have me running them anytime soon. So it’s good to have a bearing on what to expect!

@zephyr - I am appreciating the 200 level class in seed sprouting. Would love to get a picture of the seedling at what you would consider the “ready” size.

I would love to see a dedicated thread. Much easier to track through. Link back here when generally applicable stuff happens.

I’d love to see a dedicated thread on this as well, even if we dont get many updates. It’s certainly worthy!

Can you give more details? Are these from Bodhi or he had something similar?
