Quitting weed after 40yrs problem,help?

Posted Today, 12:47 PM

hi all well due to recent health issue i found myself unable to smoke weed in spliffs but i find having tried vapes of several types that they make me cough worse than baccy or pure weed do,

i have been a habitual weed user since early teens and am 60 years old now but suffer from asthma and copd/emphysema and recently contracted a hospital aquired viral disease which made it simply impossible for me to smoke even my pipe which has been my go too method for several decades which has always worked for me when the copd meds fail the weed enables me to breath by clearing my airways and allowing the yuck from the lungs to exit, even my gp told me if cannabis helps to keep using it which was fine for years but since this recent illness i find myself suffering not only the copd breathing problems but insomnia and constant nightmares when i do sleep, this is after many years not dreaming at all that i ever remember im told this is a common thing in long term cannabis users but the gp has no viable method to help deal with this issue.

and yes before anyone asks i have tried edibles/cannabis oil which is fine if you just want to get stoned but this does little to nothing for the breathing issue, also found i have a sever adverse reaction to steroids so when i have a chest infection which is often several times a year and am prescribed both antibiotics and steroids i suffer from depression and short temper everything makes me anxious and i cannot abide idiots but also cannot help saying so rather rudely! this makes me refuse to take the steroids except as a very last resort.

the weed has honestly been the only medicine that works for me consistently despite all the nhs meds of many kinds of inhalers and pills but having got to the being taken into hospital now several times and getting this virus so bad im unable to even smoke a tiny pipe the combo of stopping weed and the huge doses of meds have made the insomnia unbearable and the nightmares so bad im scared to go to sleep! so my question is has anyone else dealt with similar situation and if so how? i feel its a waste of time and also risky as fuck trying to get help from the nhs and wondered if you guys had any ideas? sorry for the long and boring post. peace all

Stay away from distillate and other bullshit vapes and buy only live resin and rosin from tested, reputable companies. Your coughing will become nonexistent. I previously used home made distillate and store bought distillate and had horrible results.

Buddy my heart to yours I feel a lot of your pain and I’m ā€œonlyā€ 43.

Have you tried Dabbing? After getting covid Dabs were the only thing my lungs didn’t reject until I was over it.

Additionally my MRS has serious asthma and she is able to take on dab hits (at 480f) with a rich and effective vapour. This also gets us by the end of a session to have a couple of solid coughs getting all that built up lung butter out and down the sink. :+1:

Regarding your chest infection issue, I get this to and found that when it flairs up I start supplementing with pills as the plant is known to target respiratory infections.

Additionally, I take daily oregano oil sublingually as it’s a natural and not resistance developing antibiotic! This burns but does get those mucus pouring out right after and then the bonus of a clearer system.

edit: As @CocoaCoir put it so well live resin and rosin is the way to you. I got my 6 ton press used from someone in my own neighbourhood for 1/2 price retail. It paid for itself in the first 2 months with pressings.

hi thanks for reply,i only ever smoke weed i grow myself and the oil is made using lab grade isopropyl from a uk manufacturer and is 99.9% and i have a very thorough and clean method which has been regularly lab tested and only contaminants found was a tiny amount of water,i would never trust any commercial extractions made in the uk nor use anyone elses weed esp from dealers here who often use dangerous insecticides etc.tbh the cough is part of my life and only a great problem when i get a chest infection or virus which has strained my stomach muscles due to so severe coughing, even strong pain killers dont help, but the dreams/nightmares are so vivid and make it terrifying trying to sleep without using cannabis at all, first time ive dealt with this in my life and its a true horror!

Just get a rosin press.

Bummer man, sending sincere sympathy your direction!

AND a possible suggestion. I have a homebrew vaporizer with precise temp control that I often use at very low temps just to savor the terpines and entourage volatiles that flash off quickly under flame in a pipe. Temps between 200-300 never result in coughing and seem to sooth my throat & lungs rather than irritate them.

My rig is a custom job, posted somewhere on OG, but the commercial Volcano system uses the same principle.

Just a thought, and best wishes,

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

I use this vaporizer and have been quite happy with it. Even bought a spare when on sale.
Should be able to find it cheaper if you dig a bit.

Reasearch has hypothesized THC restricts REM sleep cycles. REM is the part of the sleep cycle when you dream. This is why dreams are at 120% after quitting. If you abstain for a while the dreams will calm down in a few weeks.

Best of luck to you :+1:

Sorry to hear, my 2 cents
I have been using ā€œMullein teaā€ for ā€œClearingā€ my lungs
I do the tea
some ā€œsmokeā€ to mullein to clear lungs, or ease pressure

hope you get back to toking soon! be well

I know you said you tried ā€œvaping ā€œ but stay away from any of the vapes with direct heat coils, they kill my lungs. I’ve got a focus carta 2 that I use now(and an aeris) that use a ceramic convection heater/bowl and even with my super sensitive lungs I’m able to take nice big hits. I only use mine for concentrate, but I have a flower bowl also I haven’t tried yet, but may also be worth trying.
They aren’t cheap, but worth every dime in my personal opinion.
Good luck šŸ«¶šŸ¼

You could take mucinex for the mucus / fleam in ur lungs and just eat edibles.

Maybe try goldenrod or Mullen i think you can even smoke one or both not sure probably double check that. I harvested some wild goldenrod a couple of years ago and drink it in a tea. It seems to help some but my symptoms aren’t as severe as yours. I wish you good luck with your search.

I take Mullein in liquid form and it helps clear up congestion.

My advice would be switch to rosins and get a Puffco type device, and only vape on the lowest settings.

Avoid anything dispensary … no distillate… no oils or hash…

They make these carbon filters for pipes (pipes need to be that kind )

That make smoking extremely smooth

I hope this helps you @duke

I was diagnosed with COPD around 2009. I’ve had asthma since my teen years. Also for 20 years, I was a 3-5 packs a day smoker. June of 2014 I put cigs down for good. I used joints to quit. Smoked and vaped for the first 5 years. I’ve been smoke free for over 5 years now. This is what I learned on that journey.
About 6 month after I put down cigs for joints, I noticed my lungs were not getting any better. Even doing dietary things like carrot juice to help clean up my lungs. What I did to fix this was to change heat source. I put the lighter down and switched to an herb iron. After this my lungs started to feel better. The proof was cleaning my bong. A world of difference when no butane is involved. I felt the bong being easier to clean was a reflection of my lungs. The lighters where keeping my lungs dirty.
As to Vaping. Filtration is key. There are a small few desktops that have replaceable filters, Airizer for one. I highly suggest the filtered air vaporizers.
My daily driver this whole time has been the herb iron with glass vape attachment, a good bong with an ash catcher. Some times hacking and coughing is just the medicine removing all the junk from your lungs. I do suggest smaller hits until the lungs get warmed up.
I also track my local air quality. If the air quality is bad, Ill where a surgical mask even in my own house and forgo toking. Anytime I go outside I wear a surgical mask. It helps a lot.
Two last things that have helped me a lot. The book ā€˜Breath, the new science of a lost art’, by James Nestor. I highly suggest this book.
The Wim Hof method. Its a simple method that anyone can do. 3 simple parts. Part One a guided diaphragm breathing exercise, takes about 10-20 minutes a day. This can get you high as a kite. Breath towards the tingles. 2nd part is cold exposure. I do a 2-3 minute cold shower after my hot one. The trick here is to relax instead of shiver. 3rd part is to repeat daily.
Organic weed over salt based. Salt based product irritates my throat and lungs. Rosin over any other concentrate.
For me there was light on the other side of the tunnel, it just took a lot of time and effort to get there. I hope this has helped. Good luck.

I am one deeply believes that God has an answer for every malady I would 1st study a diet that would be effective in helping your respiratory system recover and even if you can start exercises nothing too intense if your body is not used to it then perhaps continue using the cannabis ie eating it and seeing if 11-Hydroxy-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol can help with using all the proactive stuff to modulate your system and make continuous improvements diet will be as crucial as physical activities that would be considered healthy exercise the cannabis will just aid it when the endocannabinoid system is put to work I was having heart issues and truly believed I would have a heart attack and probably pass but I have changed a lot of things habit wise with cannabis and have seen improvement I would say 78%+ improvement with no more pressure on my heart and the rhythm going back to normal rather than the crazy palpitations and fluttering I was experiencing along with shortness of breath and light headedness that made it scary to walk but I feel that if you make some changes and make a habit of doing good for your body that your body recognize it and respond accordingly I believe that can make some improvement I have heard of one herb for lungs that you could experiment with I believe you may have to steep it in spring water to utilize its medicinal properties but the herbs name is"mullein" it is said to have benefits for your respiratory system as does garlic when you eat it raw or I believe aged extract may have potential for your respiratory system there are a lot of answers that could be your next path towards recovery so you can live a qualit of life you deserve I wish you the best my friend may you make a healthy recovery
