Most of the time when folk says fems it is referring to feminized seeds. The way your process reads is that you had six females out of a population of 40 regular seeds as received from a friend. FWIW, an unusual M/F ratio. You had then selected from that population for your desirable traits. One trait being being selected are hermaphrodites (aka bananas) and, from the point onward, you utilized this trait, allowing the plants to herm to generate additional seeds, to further make selections. In this way, your theory is, you can self without worrying about reversal. Is that what you are doing?
