Sam Skunkman’s Private Seed Collection – Never Released

Original Haze, Thunk 2, and Skunk #1 Triploid

This year is dedicated to Sam Skunkman, and I’ll do my best to honor his wishes and preserve his genetics. I’ve got over 100 Original Haze seeds, plus Thunk 1 & 2, Skunk (Special Triploid), and some of his latest crosses.

The plan is to select and use the best for a final Original Haze release. I have them all—from Posi Haze #19, TFD, Tom Hill, Golli, Seedsman, and two different private lines from Sam himself, as well as Oldtimer’s Haze. This will be a long journey, but after more than 30 years of growing and smoking, I know that nothing compares to the effect Haze has on body & soul.

If there were no Haze, I’m sure I wouldn’t be doing what I do today. Preserving these special genetics is a must, and I promised Sam I would.

A Personal Note
After Sam passed away, it wasn’t easy to get back into growing. I had work to focus on, and careful planning was needed to make this year’s project a reality.

When I last visited him before Christmas, I gave him the book “CANNABIS BREEDING” by James Loud and brought his wife roses for taking care of him. I wasn’t sure what would fit better, but he was really happy about the book. Two days later, we had our final call. He mentioned a few issues in the book but said that most of it was true and well-written.

He told me:

“You should sprout some Thunk 2… and of course, the Haze.”
His method was about selecting the best females, reversing them all, and letting them cross-pollinate—maintaining diversity, but with all killer plants like the mothers. I’ve already tested this with four plants, and now I have a better idea of how to proceed. This time, I’ll also do a regular reproduction of the best selections.

Planning & Execution
I always create a detailed plan before starting:

Goal: What I want to achieve.
Strategy: When to plant, how to manage different tents, and how many clones I need to take care of.
Now, everything is clear. This year is fully dedicated to Sam’s private Original Haze and Thunk 2, which he was so proud of. Thunk 2 leans more towards Thai genetics—I saw his plant behind the window. The seeds are old, and the time to preserve them is now.

I’ve already started by sprouting Haze and Thunk 2 first. Over time, I will select the best Haze and produce the final Original Haze seeds, just as Sam wanted. He told me:

“You’ll find the gold in those seeds.”
Current Progress
Original Haze: 100% germination rate Check mark button :white_check_mark:
Thunk 2: Still uncertain—tough shells, but I have my method…
Sam himself used a handful of seeds to get just four plants, so I know what I’m up against.

Method for Germinating Old Seeds
I take a pencil and wrap fine sandpaper around it with the rough side facing inward, securing it with tape. This creates a 10 cm tube with the rough surface inside.

Add seeds – Close one end with your finger, drop in a few seeds, and seal the other opening with your thumb.
Shake gently – Move the tube back and forth for 30 to 60 seconds to roughen the seed coat.
Hydrogen peroxide soak – Mix 3% H₂O₂ with water at a 10:1 ratio and soak seeds for 24 hours in the dark at 25°C (up to 48 hours for very old seeds).
Plant in soil – Use high-quality organic seedling soil enriched with mycorrhiza.

Sam’s last/private original haze … germination 10/10 … thunk2 still on the way but two are up

Many thanks to everyone for your trust & support.

This journey is just beginning, and I’m excited to see what we can achieve. Green heart :green_heart:

This sounds wholesome and pretty exciting, I’m a bit younger still and never had the chance to really see those without being watered down.

All the luck with them you will have me popping here now and then

Cheers!

Good luck on the project. Already off to a good start with some germination!

I found this part interesting,

“His method was about selecting the best females, reversing them all, and letting them cross-pollinate—maintaining diversity, but with all killer plants like the mothers”.

I have gravitated to a similar strategy with my work but tend to do isolated crosses so I can see which combinations work best. Also so I can keep the s1 populations separate. Then you can recombine any lines for more vigor if you run into inbreeding depression. I suppose either way could work really well as long as you have a couple separate lines or multiple parents in the mixed pool with plenty of offspring selection.

Im doing that now with Sams old skunk 1 work from 89. He did an acre open field pollination and it had tons of undesirable offspring to work thru. I’m finally to the point of having multiple strong stinky skunk females that are sexually stable to work forward. I was intending on reversing one onto the other 4 or 5 selections, and keeping the s1 separate. But now you have me thinking about reversing them all onto each other…

WOW what a legacy project!!
In the past few years, I’ve fallen crazy in love with OT1 hazes.
Syrups, Celia Bx1 were OT1’s work, and I find them stunning!
All the best wishes in your project MM!

Hey madmac thanks for the detailed posts here and on IC i have read and learned a lot. This one is interesting to me cause i’ve got a lot of seeds with Germination problems. If i read it correctly you use 10 parts of hydrogen peroxide on 1 part of water. Am I correct?
I have always used 1 part hydrogen peroxide on 2 parts of water.
