Yes. Roots mess up all kinds of hydro systems all the time. DWC has less parts and pieces for roots to break. @BIGJ had some plants in a section of gutter. 
Woo we. Roots everywhere.
I use DWC specifically because I hate cleaning roots out of pumps.
They are very supple and fragile at the ends, but THICCC the closer to the stem you go.
