When I’m making seed I don’t care about bud so I let it dry quickly, say 5 days, then I shuck them and leave the seeds in a single layer in an open container for about a week.
The extra week is probably not necessary but it puts my mind at ease about moisture in a plastic bag.
This is hardly original. I’m just curious what other if any methods you good people use.
Hang dry with fans blowing directly on it. Once it gets bone dry, I start shucking over a trim bin. I collect the kief and chaff to use in oil.
They may hang this way for weeks before I get around to shucking. If it’s going to be too long before I can get to them, I buck the buds into turkey bags.
After shucking, I wrap the seeds in disposable paper napkins and twist tie with labels. I let them sit out in a cool, dry, dark place for a few weeks until I bag them with desiccant sachet and into storage.
I have an academic article (on a dead computer) on seed storage.
They were storing the harvested beans at 50% rh for 3 weeks (room ambient) before storage (refrigerator or freezer).
They did note that there was general 1~2% loss transitioning from non frozen to frozen.
I leave the pollinated branch on the plant until it is dead. Then I shuck the bud when I get to it. Once clean, I dry/cure the seeds in a dry cool place for at least one month. Then into airtight container with silicon beads.
Let it hang until the buds turn to dust, then shuck into a paper bag with desiccant packs for a few days-week then in small plastic baggies in a 100% uv jar filled with 10 or so big desiccant packs with my other seed. Then vacuum sealed tight and in the fridge till used.
I’ve only done one seed run so far, but I hung-dried the seeded flowers to over- dryness, shucked them & separated the crumbled plant material by hand. Stored the seeds in a paper grocery bag layered across the bottom for a week or so, then ultimately stored in baggies and these little coke vials
Hey @Foreigner , check out anti-germination emzimes in fresh seed or something along those lines. This is the main reason we age out seed before putting in air tight and fridge. My seed sits in an open cup, in the cupboard, for at least 4 wks before pack up.
I think you are correct, they applied that ‘conditioning’ to all of their seeds but they did make a reference to getting the internal moisture content down before storage (minimizing the potential for ice crystals I think)
Me too, I shuck them, then put them into a big jar with desiccant beads and a hygrometer. Usually process them wet because I don’t like dead plants hanging too long.
Indicas need more of a dry time before they can be germinated.
Sativas will have calyxes that open up and almost start dropping the seeds. Those will be ready to pop .
Sativa seeds also have a longer shelf life.
Once dry, shuck, leave in carboard box with top off for a week. Then winterise, 5 days in freezer (fridge works too for a week to ten days but make sure container is completely airtight!). If i am long term storing them I ultradry them with silica gel down to 2% moisture. Weigh equal parts seed to silica gel. I use lab grade storage tubes for short term or for long term, glass. Recently I started drying in a controlled cab at a specific VPD (0.7 to 0.8) but that’s relatively new. Strains stored this way getting 80% germination after 15 years stored at room temp, so that’s good. Ultradried then frozen minimises cell damage as water expands.
