Seed maturation question

I’m doing my first intentional chuck (reversed selected female to a handful of other chosen ladies) , pollinated between day 25 & 32 I’m currently at day 71 of flower, and am picking at random spots to see the progress of maturation rate of the seeds… Some are still pale colored but HARDENED & others dark with tiger stripes. I’m guessing no matter how long I wait there will be a certain number of “aborts” vs healthy viable seeds? Any info is appreciated thanks!

You’ll always have immature beans come out of a pollination. It just happens.

Sometimes those white beans will still be viable. I always give them the “squish” test. Lightly push on them on a hard surface. If they’re no bueno they will crack the ones that don’t I still throw in the fridge along with the pretty tiger stripe beans to await germination!

Good luck!

That’s what I’ve started to assume, thanks for the information brother… preciate it, also… Should I just let them sit in room temp for a few weeks before putting in the fridge? I just removed the chaf and threw them in a a small zip lock in the fridge already , probably only got about 3-4 mature seeds per plant so far… but I would estimated theres at least a few hundred per plant! thanks!

Usually I give them a few days open air on a paper plate. After that into a zip lock and long term storage in the fridge.

Easy money.

Also note that some will mature while hang drying.

Was wondering about this too!

Before using the fresh seeds after drying I usually leave them sitting for a couple of weeks before refrigerating them. I get good germinating rates.

It is " best practice" to let them dry/ cure for at least 1 month in a cool, dry, dark place. That way you can put them in the freezer if you need to later for long storage. The drier the better.

All solid advice here. I can add if you dry them out as slowly as possible without letting rot happen. They will still keep maturing while drying out like was said before. Also can move the plant away from the light and keep it in the soil for a week and then slow dry to give them the most time possible. You really can’t over mature seeds. The longer the better is the rule.

It’s very simple with canna : wait that the abscisic acid is kicking in the whole plant. Leaves are faded/bleached and are falling like shit, seeds start to get out from the flowers there and there … ready to be propagated by the death of the plant.

It’s increasing a bit the calibration but not much. The rate of immature seeds is more coming from the synchro of maturity of your females while they are pollinated. Maturing to death will just insure the quality of the calibration that pass, and some spare seeds under-calibrated but good for experiments (or freebies ^^).

If you want to keep it simple as fuck (it don’t offer constant and reliable perfs with all lines) : just dry your seeds like you dry your weed. But a bit more insistant on the drying sequences. Yes, with curing too.

If you want a more reliable way for your % of viability after 1 year storing (specially for fems) … you have to do the strict opposite. You have to dry fast your seeds the day you harvest them, after cleaning. I had a vaccum oven for this in past, but now i’m using a simple dehydrator (small scale) and it’s far enough, even if it’s a bit more long.

Here, a good PDF as starting point. If you want reliable datas, never ask to stoners but to an industrial ^^

I appreciate all of the info! Happy to find so many knowledgeable people on here…
At day 71 today, senescence kicking in heavy leaves faded and drying up, think I’m gonna chop today for drying. Will update soon!

I air dry them in a Tupperware for two weeks.

I figure seed maturity happens at 5 weeks from pollination.

I generally discard anything that even resembles an abort.

I’m glad that it’s helping.

It’s very well made i find, i’m fucking jealous my wikis are dog shit in comparison lol They even explain in details how the most used machines are working, to hack them in ghetto mode.
