I need to do a seed run in the same larger area that has other tents that are in production.
Is there a way to keep the pollen from the seed run tent from getting blown all over the common space, or at least out of the production tents?
i had considered taking the fan exhaust from the seed run tent into a bucket of water to trap the pollen…so a Pollen Bong…or whatever. not 100pct sure this will work, but seems plausible.
I guess what I did for my open pollination while still have two other tents running was to put plastic tarp up for a quarantined area around that tent and turned off all fans for a few minutes before opening/entering. I also would literally strip down to my birthday suite and go take a shower immediately.
Also, doing seperate watering from the other tents on different days was my approach. I guess my method seems to be working as that Triple Purple Rhino plant hasnt shown signs of her pistils/stigmas being pollinated.
I know hidden in @zephyr 's log he highlights a method of using a cut out portion of a furnace filter that filters out pollen attached to the exhaust fan, like where the carbon filter would typically be.
not sure i can do the intake filtering…i think the air just comes in from all over.
though, i have a few extra furnace filters to play with, so I’ll try that. it’s just a single female i need to reverse. maybe it wont have that much pollen, but with some care I can make sure i don’t get impacted much in the other tents. if I get a handlful of seeds in the production run that is ok I guess.
This how all my tents have been set up. Csrbon filter with an extra dust sleeve over it. You can really notice hownit catches excess pollen from my experience.
I would recommend one for sure if you dont have it on the out exhaust @splinter7 .
Then just replace the bucket with an appropriately rated filter to catch the pollen, if you think it will get through the carbon.
Drawing intake from the vents in the tent is fine also as long as you always have a tiny amount of negative pressure. If you go neutral or even positive pressure you will likely let pollen back out the intakes.
The problem I see with keeping the pollen inside the seed run tent is you have to open the door at some point. As soon as you unzip the tent the negative pressure will stop as it’s no longer sealed and pollen will escape into the air. Just something to think about.
you think a couple branches STS’d on a 86oz potted plant will give enough pollent to be a problem? i can keep it short i suppose, 4ft tent. Maybe keep it 15 feet from everthing else. A few seeds aren’t a big deal, but a complete fertilization would be bad.
Negative pressure in the tent and the carbon filter worked just fine with my other tent being across the room. and plan out your day so you dont go back and forth to limit the chance. the bucket idea sounds good to catch anything that slips through. and keep a spray bottle around i would mist and spray myself down sometimes if I knew I’d have to go in the other tent after the pollen one.
once you got balls you could snip the branches before they drop anything and further seperate them from the others. branches in a jar with a little hydro solution would let you collect where ever.
After pollinating your tent/room, wait five minutes then spray your plants (thoroughly) with tap water. This will kill most if not all the viable pollen that hasn’t been “used”
I’ve done this to excellent success, and learned somewhere. If you do some searching around you can find the info.
Rain water does not kill the pollen, btw
you could cut the branches with balls off and stick them in a jar of water, but I normally use FF grow big and have put clones in megacrop solution recantly as well mixed up to whatever thier hydroponic measurement is. they normally stay alive and wiil continue to grow and flower or produce pollen while in the jar or container.
I haven’t done a single seedrun yet but have been meaning to for a while.
This is how I planned to do it:
Get a D.I.C.K. per daddy I want to flower (Daddy Isolation Chamber Kit - patent pending). It’s basically a see-through tote/box in which you can isolate your dads fro the females. You use a cheap computer fan for air exhaust that you cover with polen filters from car industry or whatever you want and another pollen filter at the intake hole.
2 holes in a clear container, a computer fan and some filters with some silicon and tape is all ya need. Voila, your male is isolated and can be flowered in the same room as the females.
When the daddy throws enough pollen, you pull out the D.I.C.K. he is contained in and go to another room or outside or whatever, away from the rest of the grow.
Harvest the pollen.
Now you can work with the pollen with a brush and from a small baggy and not spread it everywhere you might not want it.
I then planned to bring the females (if they are in pots) to that separate room as well, dust the buds I want to make seeds off with the according daddy pollen and use a see through bag loosely crimped (not air tight) around the branch with the bud I just pollenated.
Can do that with several dads on the same mum to speed along breeding efforts/finding the right cross.
Then spray the air around me/myself with some water mist and move the impregnated seedplant back into the flowering space.
