I feel like a lot of people who grow probably also have wicked aquariums. I know I do, and at least one other grower I know has way cooler stuff than me as well.
Itâll get there! I donât have one now, but I kept aquariums for many years. Had a pair of clown fish for 15+ years that even laid eggs for me. Been thinking about doing a nice planted freshwater in the near future.
i know nothing about aquariums, but they are always awesome to stare into and get lost. I dont have the patience for my own, so Ill check out other peoples.
Your tank looks awesome. I want to get an aquarium with a bunch of different fish and plants so I can harvest the microbes from it for my garden. What kinds of plants do you have? Also, what is your substrate?
Iused to breed discus for a bit. Had 700 gallons of aquariums in one room. Different size tanks. Breeder tanks, grow out tanks⌠Wasnt very successful but did manage to raise a few out. By far the most beautiful of fresh water fishes.
Make sure you do some research on what types of fish will go well together. Personally, I just stuck with livebearers (guppies, endlers, mollies, platys, etc.) and worked around them, because they donât need a huge tank and theyâre gorgeous to look at.
I have the neon tetras as well, and pygmy corydoras, which are both compatible with each other as well as the livebearers.
As far as plants, the species I have with the most biomass is ludwigia palustris, which may be sold as âmarsh seedboxâ or âwater purslaneâ. I also have a couple large examples of hygrophila polysperma, which is often sold as âdwarf hygrophilaâ.
For substrate, I just get some pea gravel from under my porch and sift it with my 8mm soil sifting screen. If youâre looking to harvest mulm, which is what some growers buy in a bottle as âfish shitâ, Iâd recommend using a nice thick layer (maybe an inch and a half or two inches) of large-ish sized gravel (8-10mm pieces or so). That will allow the mulm to settle into the spaces between the substrate so you can siphon it out.
Usually the female guppies you bring home from pet stores are pre-impregnated. If theyâve been in the same tank as a male for longer than half a second, theyâre preggers.
Discus are gorgeous. Breeding them sounds fascinating, but Iâm not sure I have the space or the patience. My livebearers kinda take care of everything on their own.
Totally get it, the salt water can be a bit of a chore maintenance wise. That being said, I think there is a lot of overlap for people growing hydroponically and people keeping aquariums. Even better if you already have a home R.O. water setup for your grow. If you can mix nutes and p.h. adjust water, you can likely maintain a saltwater aquarium. Even easier if you avoid live coral.
Someday Iâll definitely have a saltwater tank, complete with live coral. My buddyâs dad is the other grower I was referring to who has an awesome tank, and heâs got all kinds of crazy coral and other cool saltwater stuff. One day.
I have an angel fish as well in the 55 gallon. in the 20 gallon i have the babies of 2 convicts in my 55 gallon. i put them in the 20 gallon. look at them now.
