Silica? Yea or nay

I have been thinking about silica as an addition to help bolster stem strength but I am not sure if it is worth while. I have a plant that makes me netvous and so I need perspective.

Here is the plant in question vs others around it. All the stems are laying over. Should I stake for safety, or let her run au natural as I want to? Will adding silica hlp this?

Silica is a yea to me.

I would still support the plant with a cage or something, cause she floppy and its not a miracle fix, but yes, silica is a great addition

You should support all the plants. With buds they will break down in heavy wind and rain.

I absolutely use silica because the medium I grow in is void of it. I dont know if it will help your specific problem. Not all silica products are created equal. I use Agsil16H Potassium Silicate - Concentrated Solution – BuildASoil

As with most nutrients, I use alot less then suggested.

Yep, horsetail is a natural source if you are so inclined. It contains approx 25% silica

Its cheap & there is evidence of several benefits. I’ll keep using it until I find a good reason not to.

Yea :+1:

agsil16 is available for $20/lb at customhydronutrients . com

I just picked up some of the botanicare silica after reading up on all its potential benefits. Have yet to try it out but I’m going to start using it my next watering which will probably be today or tomorrow.

@Enrico
To answer your question about the plant… It probably wont do much to help you at this point, the benefits of silica get built into the plant as its growing. Going to have to go mechanical support for that floppy girl.

Great looking garden btw.

I also stake and trellis.

@Longtooth is that a solid silica brand. I want to add one to my lineup but don’t know which brand to go with.

I have mammoth Silica from when I was using salt nutes, would using this product in a notill setting be more detrimental than beneficial?

I’ve read a lot of good things about Power Si but the price tag was a little much for me to justify experimenting with.

No dont do it silica will go into the weed and then when you smoke it will taste like computers. Don’t trust me? Check out the rollitup forums.

Thanks for all the good advice. Just tryiing to keep life simple truthfully as staking the plants was not what I was hoping for but figured was necessary.

I’ve done very little research on it. I’m not sure what computers taste like.

Nay. I hate agsil because it messes with your pH pretty hard. I like a natural source like basalt, but it is not fast acting. You kind of need to use it from the start.

I’d foliar feed the plants si. It’ll make it available to the whole plant immediately

Also won’t mess with ph.

Helps with hot/cold resiliency

I ferment horsetail and stinging nettle for my bio available silica it’s fast acting

I’ve also seen some evidence that humic acid can help make silica uptake more consistent without messing with the ph. I already have some humic acid so I’m going to mess around and see for myself.

Its what I’ve been using for a few years. Haven’t had a reason to change so far.

4-ml per gallon every 2nd or 3rd watering which equals a week to 10 days. Growing in coco.
